UAE's SCA urges Finfluencers to register

The UAE's Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) has called on all financial influencers (Finfluencers) operating across digital platforms and media channels to proactively register and obtain official authorised 'Finfluencer' status. This designation requires full compliance with regulatory standards to ensure content transparency and safeguard the rights of market participants, a Wam news agency report said. Waleed Saeed Al Awadhi, CEO of the SCA, stated: 'In today's rapidly evolving digital financial ecosystem, regulating Finfluencers activity has become imperative. Finfluencers play a pivotal role in shaping investor decisions. Official authorisation by the SCA underscores their commitment to professional standards and reinforces public trust in the integrity of financial content.' The SCA offers eligible individuals the opportunity to apply for authorised Finfluencer status, allowing them to share investment analyses and offer recommendations related to approved financial instruments or entities through digital or traditional media, as long as they remain in strict compliance with the SCA's standards. To further encourage adherence, the SCA is granting a three-year waiver on registration and renewal fees, along with access to legal advisory services. In parallel, the SCA urges the public to verify a Finfluencer's authorisation status before engaging with their content or acting on their recommendations. The SCA also encourages prompt reporting of any unauthorised activities via its official website or call centre, stressing that interactions with unauthorised individuals or entities may pose significant financial risks to investors. The SCA reiterates that public awareness and active engagement are the first line of defence against unreliable or unregulated financial content. To apply to become an Authorised Finfluencer recognised by the SCA, or to report non-compliant practices, interested people should visit the SCA website or call the toll-free number 800722823.

Forfaiting a Lucrative option

Forfaiting started in the middle of last Century in Europe and it is taking shape all over the globe to promote trade finance and boost relationship between exporters and importers. In this context, the ICC Rules for Forfaiting (URF 800), aimed to create a standard set of rules to be applied within the forfaiting market worldwide, moreover, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNICITRAL) endorsed (URF 800). Needless to say, this is good work for ICC, as this rule and the other rules of UCP 600, URDG 758, etc., show the ICC commitment to promote international trade. Forfaiting is a method of trade finance that allows exporters to obtain cash by selling their medium and long-term foreign accounts receivable at a discount on 'without recourse' basis. Forfaiting can be undertaken by banks or finance firms that perform non-recourse export financing through the purchase of trade receivables. 'Without recourse' or 'non-recourse' means accepting the risk of non-payment. Forfaiting eliminates risk of non-payment once the goods have been delivered to the foreign buyer, in accordance with the agreed sale terms. Advantages of forfaiting include, inter alia, elimination of all risk to the exporter with full financing of contract value, exporters can offer medium and long-term financing in markets where the credit risk would otherwise be high, forfaiting works with bills of exchange, promissory notes, or a letter of credit, foreign buyers provide bank guarantee, letter of guarantee or LCs and financing can be arranged on a one-shot basis at fixed or floating interest rate. Once forfaiter commits to the deal and sets the discount rate, the exporter can incorporate the discount into the selling price. The exporter then accepts a commitment issued by the forfaiter, signs the contract with the importer, and obtains, if required, a guarantee from the bank of the importer that provides the documents required to complete the forfaiting. The exporter delivers the goods to the importer and delivers the documents to the forfaiter who verifies them and pays as agreed in the deal. Since this payment is without recourse, the exporter has no further interest in the financial aspects of the transaction and it is the forfaiter who must collect the future payments due from the importer. The cost of forfaiting to the exporter is determined by the agreed rate of discount for the tenor of the receivables and a margin reflecting the risk being sold. In addition, there are certain costs that are borne by the importer that the exporter should also take into consideration. The degree of risk varies based on the importing country, the length of the loan, the currency of the transaction, and the repayment structure. The higher the risk, the higher the margin and therefore the discount rate. However, forfaiting can be more cost-effective than traditional trade finance tools because of many attractive benefits it offers to the exporter. We believe, it is a beneficial advisable tool to interested parties to promote trade finance.

ICC launches Building Safety Month 2025

The International Code Council (ICC), a leading global source of model codes and standards and building safety solutions, has launched its 45th annual Building Safety Month campaign this month, underscoring its global commitment to safer and more sustainable construction. The month-long initiative promotes the adoption and enforcement of up-to-date building codes and aims to improve public understanding of the various elements and professionals involved in creating safe and sustainable structures. Under the theme "Game On!", the campaign encourages individuals, organisations, and communities to learn about and prioritise building safety. It seeks to encourage engagement at the local level in strengthening the built environment, particularly in rapidly growing regions such as the GCC countries. The ICC stated that its ongoing investment in the GCC highlights the significance of consistent and enforceable building codes that adapt to technological advancements, climate challenges, and population growth. As part of the campaign, the ICC will also observe the second annual International Building Safety Day (IBSD) on May 22, 2025. Established in 2024 with the support of 28 international organisations, IBSD emphasizes the crucial role of building safety in health, well-being, and economic stability. The day serves as an annual call for governments, policymakers, and industry professionals to prioritize safety in all communities. As part of the campaign, ICC will also observe the second annual International Building Safety Day (IBSD) on May 22, 2025. Established in 2024 with support from 28 international organizations, IBSD highlights the profound impact building safety has on health, well-being and economic stability. The day serves as an annual call to action for governments, policymakers and industry professionals to prioritize safety in every community, it added. Mohamed Amer, Managing Director of ICC MENA, stated, 'ICC MENA's mission has always been to strengthen the safety and integrity of buildings while supporting the region's extraordinary pace of development. As cities across the GCC continue to grow vertically and technologically, the importance of compliance with unified, robust building codes becomes even more essential, not only to protect lives and property but to drive sustainable and inclusive growth.' 'Building safety is not a one-time action; it's a continuous commitment that involves government leaders, private-sector innovators and community stakeholders. Through our advocacy and partnerships, we aim to create a culture of safety that lasts for generations. 'We are proud to be participating in multiple regional events across the full ecosystem of building safety, and we're pleased to see growing momentum around both Building Safety Month and IBSD — a timely reminder of the shared responsibility and collective action needed to elevate safety standards across the built environment." This year's weekly themes are: • Week Two (May 4–10): "Build Your Offence" — Strategies to actively support, advocate and implement building safety policies. • Week Three (May 11–17): "Build Your Defence" — Tools and planning techniques to prepare for natural disasters and hazards. • Week Four (May 18–24): "The Starting Lineup" — Spotlighting the professionals who uphold safety and inspiring careers in the building sciences. • Week Five (May 25–31): "Going into Overtime" — A forward look at emerging trends, technologies and innovations shaping global safety resilience.
