ADVERTISEMENT ODP's Chief Executive, Eng. Maqbool Al Wahaibi, has underscored the project's dual strategic value: it reinforces the company's commitment to sustainable practices while responding to growing demand for digital infrastructure that aligns with climate goals. The initiative also dovetails with Oman's broader climate action roadmap, which includes institutional support through the newly launched Oman Net Zero Centre. The green data centre initiative arrives amid broader industry and governmental efforts to promote sustainability within Oman's ICT sector. Technical specialists advocate for innovations such as AI-optimised energy management systems, advanced cooling methods suitable for arid climates—including liquid immersion and sea-water cooling—and renewable-powered microgrids coupled with smart grid integration. These innovations support energy resilience and align with Oman's Vision 2040 targets. ODP's existing operations cover approximately 10 megawatts across five data centres, with plans to double capacity to meet rising demand, particularly for AI infrastructure. The green energy initiative injects a new strategic dimension into this expansion, affirming the company's emphasis on reducing carbon intensity as digital growth accelerates. This solar-powered development is one among multiple ODP-led infrastructure advances. Among other regional moves, ODP previously signed a substantial agreement—totaling $450 million—with INTRO Technology to build the Kemet Data Centre in Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone. Muscat: Oman Data Park (ODP), the Sultanate's premier provider of managed services, cloud solutions, and advanced cybersecurity, has entered into a strategic partnership with Solar Wadi to launch a transformative solar power project that will generate 1.4 megawatts (MW) of clean energy in its initial phase. A subsequent expansion will add an additional 400 kilowatts (kW) of capacity, reinforcing its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its data operations. This pioneering initiative will directly power ODP's data centers and represents a decisive step toward the establishment of Oman's first Green Energy Data Center, an ambition that underscores the company's dedication to sustainable digital infrastructure and its alignment with the nation's Net Zero targets outlined under Oman Vision 2040. Speaking on the announcement, Maqbool Al Wahaibi, CEO of Oman Data Park, said, 'This initiative is more than an infrastructure upgrade; it is a statement of intent about the future of data management in Oman. Integrating large-scale solar power generation into mission-critical facilities marks a turning point in how we approach energy resilience in the digital economy. By aligning renewable innovation with operational reliability, we are redefining the standards for sustainable cloud and data services, while advancing a technology landscape grounded in environmental responsibility.' The first phase of the project will see the installation of solar panels in the wadi area and atop the Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) 4 building in Rusayl to capture optimal sunlight and maximize electricity generation. The generated power will be channeled directly into existing electrical panels and switchgear, providing an estimated 1.4 MW of clean energy for ODP's operations. Phase Two will extend coverage by an additional 400 kW through the installation of solar infrastructure in the facility's car parking area, further reinforcing ODP's renewable energy potential. In addition to Rusayl, ODP's upcoming state-of-the-art data center in Firq, Nizwa, has been purpose-built with solar infrastructure integrated into its very foundation. Designed to deliver a total power output of 4.4 MW and to accommodate over 500 racks, with the solar initiative the facility will, from inception, generate an estimated 350 kW of that capacity from clean, solar-powered electricity, thereby advancing ODP's long-term strategy for environmentally responsible, next-generation data services. By embedding sustainability into its development roadmap, ODP continues to solidify its standing at the forefront of the region's transition to a green, circular economy. MANAH, Oman /PRNewswire/ -- Shanghai Electric's (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727) first solar power plant in Oman, the 500MW Oman Manah-1 Solar IPP Project (the "Project"), has completed one month of smooth operations after passing all assessments and final handover. The flagship Project under the Oman Vision 2040 national blueprint for sustainable environment and clean energy will generate 1.5 billion kWh of electricity annually, cutting CO₂ emissions by 780,000 tons per year, the equivalent of taking 170,000 gasoline-powered cars off Oman's roads. Shanghai Electric provided end-to-end solutions for the Project—from design and planning, procurement and construction to long-term operation and maintenance. The integrated strategy delivered an efficient, sustainable energy system while advancing global solar technology innovation. To overcome the policy and technical challenges, Shanghai Electric partnered with France's EDF under a unique dual-track agreement to meet Oman's strict technical requirements, adopting a "split-team" approach with Chinese engineers handling solar field design, while the Oman team led substation construction. This approach resolved conflicts between international standards and local regulations. The innovative project management split the construction into 11 directly managed sections that cut timelines by 22 percent. A real-time safety reporting app resolved 924 safety risks and achieved 4 million accident-free work hours. The dynamic scheduling kept large equipment usage at 90 percent efficiency, and cross-trained workers boosted site-to-site mobility. The planning also adopted a staffing strategy of competing teams with rolling inspections at 59 project zones. The designers worked on-site during substation construction and improved oversight efficiency by 30%, while a 20-member skilled team completed wiring and terminal work in just 72 hours to accelerate medium-voltage cable installation progress. The highly efficient coordination set a new record of grid connection, with simultaneous testing, day-night shifts, and China-Oman team collaboration ensuring seamless progress. The Project team finished 59 zones in nine days, which was 21 days ahead of schedule, with 100 percent grid success, zero equipment damage, and no worker injuries. "Shanghai Electric's solution completely changed how fast we thought solar projects could connect to the grid," said Hamood Al Shuaili, the Project director. "The team showed unmatched expertise and teamwork, they're world-class engineers setting new global standards." With China's high-voltage cable technology and upgraded piling support design, the site leveling preparation workload was reduced by 80 percent, which cut the construction timeline by 60 days. A streamlined supply chain and precise procurement planning guaranteed on-time delivery, with all equipment performance exceeding targets. Furthermore, the Project has boosted local employment, strengthened energy security, and created lasting social value. With a community-focused approach, 90 percent of operations and maintenance staff are local workers, and the core technical training programs have been integrated into Oman's vocational education system, with the aim of building skills for the future.
