Sam Altman sends chilling message on cybersecurity practice

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has a lot to worry about. The pressure for the ChatGPT 5 release everyone is anxiously awaiting must be enormous on its own. I expect this new version will be nothing more than all the previous models combined, plus a lot of duct tape and some "innovative" new features to make it seem less underwhelming. If that's the case, Altman has much to be concerned about. Related: Mark Cuban delivers 8-word truth bomb on AI wars Alas, his problems don't stop there. OpenAI is in the talent "poaching war" with Meta. To make matters worse, Mark Zuckerberg recently announced his plan for Meta to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into compute to build superintelligence. While OpenAI's situation regarding the functionality of the artificial intelligence models is favorable, Altman seems to be one step behind Zuckerberg's PR strategies, always having to respond to the latest move. OpenAI's latest revelation follows the same pattern. On July 22, Oracle (ORCL) and OpenAI shared that they are working on developing 4.5 GW of additional Stargate data center capacity in the U.S. The company didn't specify current capacity, but this extra work with Oracle will push it over 5GW. This recent development looks suspiciously like a response to Zuckerberg's revelation that Meta is building Hyperion, which will be able to scale up to 5GW over several years. Of course, Meta is not the only competitor Altman needs to consider. What is unique here is that he also needs to watch out for Microsoft, which is interestingly both a partner and competitor. But that's a long story for another time. Related: Meta makes a desperate-looking move, bites Apple Altman is also troubled by raising capital. OpenAI is seeking funding from new and existing investors as part of its $40 billion round announced in March, reported WIRED. A new version of the Sora model needs to be launched soon, too, as it looks like it has been overtaken by Google's Veo 3. So what else could a man with so many things on his plate be worried about? Whenever I hear an AI company CEO explaining AI's dangers, I wonder if it is like PR hype, because, let's face it, even negative marketing is marketing. In a surprising turn of events, though, Altman just said something that rings true. "A thing that terrifies me, is apparently there are still some financial institutions that will accept a voice print as authentication for you to move a lot of money or do something else," reported Business Insider. "That is a crazy thing to still be doing," continued Altman, "AI has fully defeated most of the ways that people authenticate currently - other than passwords." You can replace your lock if you lose your keys and change passwords if they get stolen, but you can't replace your fingerprints, voice, or face (unless you are Madonna). I am glad someone with Altman's influence has finally spoken up. Related: Microsoft wants to help you live longer The Arena Media Brands, LLC THESTREET is a registered trademark of TheStreet, Inc.

OpenAI, Oracle launch Stargate data center capacity expansion

This story was originally published on CIO Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily CIO Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: OpenAI and Oracle plan to develop 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity as part of the Stargate AI infrastructure push, the companies announced Tuesday. 'This significantly advances our progress toward the commitment we announced at the White House in January to invest $500 billion into 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years,' OpenAI said in a blog post. 'We now expect to exceed our initial commitment thanks to strong momentum with partners including Oracle and SoftBank.' The capacity expansion will bring OpenAI's Stargate capacity under development to over 5 gigawatts and running around 2 million chips. OpenAI said the additional capacity push will also create more than 100,000 construction and operations roles. Dive Insight: The largest infrastructure providers are paying up big time to secure a larger footprint as they continue to push AI tools and services onto customers. The U.S. grid has been flooded with data center expansion plans, but some experts question the sustainability of proposals. Utility Dive reported in May that speculative interconnection requests were five to 10 times more than the number of actual data centers. London Economics International also called into question high-end data center buildout forecasts earlier this month. Still, the rate of expansion is notable. Google said it would spend more than $25 billion in Pennsylvania on data centers last week. The announcement came just months after it committed $3 billion to facilities in Virginia and Indiana. AWS pledged $100 billion to the cause earlier this year, and Microsoft laid out plans for an $80 billion investment as well. Stargate, a joint effort bringing OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, Nvidia, Microsoft and others together, carries a $500 billion price tag — and seems to be rising. 'Easy to throw around numbers, but this is a gigantic infrastructure project,' OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post to X. 'We are planning to significantly expand the ambitions of Stargate past the $500 billion commitment we announced in January.' OpenAI's latest commitment comes just a week after the company introduced ChatGPT agent, which integrates its Operator tool with deep research capabilities to carry out tasks. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. just got a custom bat from an Ontario company. Here's the story behind it

The winning Toronto Blue Jays have been the talk of town as of late, and the same could be said about Ontario-based bat company Backyard Bats, which has created a buzz in the baseball world. A custom-made bat from Backyard Bats, a Windsor-based company, is Blue Jays' superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s newest toy at the ballpark. A post shared by Backyard (@backyardbatco) In 2004, in a backyard shed in Windsor, Ont., Paul LaMantia was hand-spinning bats out of a passion for baseball. His best friend and college baseball teammate, Ryan LaPensee, a former Major League Baseball player for the Arizona Diamondbacks, reached out to LaMantia last spring, with a vision of taking the handspun wood bats to the next level. Their mission was 'to provide players with the highest grade luxury equipment available in the baseball industry today on both sides of the border,' said the company website . By December 2024, that dream became a reality. The brand was approved by the big leagues, becoming MLB-certified, and the bats were ready to get into the hands of professional players. A post shared by Backyard (@backyardbatco) During this year's spring training, LaPensee met Guerrero Jr. and gave him a sample bat to test. 'My jaw was on the floor with how far he could hit the baseball with the bat,' LaPensee said after Guerrero Jr.'s test run. Blue Jays manager John Schneider, whose brother is the COO of the company, wanted to get the bat into his star batter's hands, said LaPensee. So on Friday, July 18, LaPensee was at the Rogers Centre in Toronto to hand-deliver four custom bats ahead of the Blue Jays' game against the San Francisco Giants. Guerrero Jr. used it during batting practice, while teammates George Springer and Alejandro Kirk watched. 'He had a big smile on his face,' LaPensee said after viewing batting practice along with his family. 'To hear that loud bang off the bat was cool,' he added. The custom-made 'VGJ27' bat would later be used in a live game that evening, where the Blue Jays shut out the Giants 4-0. A post shared by VLADIMIR GUERRERO JR (@vladdyjr27) Backyard Bats has also found its way into the hands of big league stars like Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos, and Blue Jay Davis Schneider, among others. When asked how many other stars in the league are using the bats, LaPensee admitted he's already 'lost count.' The bats range from range from $99 for youth bats, to $209 for custom pro batch bats. Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays, who currently hold first place in the AL East division, take on the New York Yankees tonight (July 23) in Toronto, before heading to Detroit to play the Tigers in a four-game series that starts on Thursday, July 24 at Comerica Park.
