Only 25% of Malaysian online sellers have intergrated AI into business operations: Lazada

The Sun18-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite widespread recognition among Malaysian online sellers leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) as a catalyst for improved productivity and cost efficiency, only 25% have integrated the technology into their business operations.
Lazada Malaysia chief operating officer Ángel Ramiro said that while 69% of Malaysians show strong familiarity with AI, the e-commerce platform's studies reveal that at least one in two Malaysian sellers remains sceptical about its usefulness.
He said key barriers to entry include cost concerns, time investment and resistance to change, with nearly 67% of employees preferring familiar manual processes.
'We understand this gap and recognise that our sellers need a strong support system beyond offering powerful tools.
'Our seller learning platform, Lazada University, and the Seller Ambassador Programme, which provides peer-to-peer mentorship, are some ways we support AI adoption.
'We have also launched a playbook to help sellers assess their AI readiness and discover how they can use AI on Lazada to drive business success,' Ramiro told SunBiz.
He said the online e-commerce platform has launched the Online Sellers Artificial Intelligence Readiness Playbook – a strategic guide to help sellers understand where they are on their AI journey and map out clear, actionable steps for adoption at their own pace.
The playbook offers sellers insight into their AI-readiness under three archetypes – AI Agnostics, Aspirants and Adepts – while highlighting operational gaps they can bridge with AI. It also outlines key AI solutions they can leverage, with direct access to resources and tutorials for maximising Lazada's built-in AI-powered tools and features.
'AI is a key priority for us, and we are focused on closing the adoption gap by upskilling the local seller ecosystem and equipping them with powerful yet easy-to-use tools. Our digital AI solutions are designed to be genuinely inclusive for sellers across Malaysia, operating from Kuala Lumpur or a small town in Pahang.
'With only 15% of Malaysian online sellers classified as 'AI Adepts', most micro-entrepreneurs and rural businesses can benefit from our infrastructural and educational support,' Ramiro said.
He also mentioned that some features Lazada has launched to support sellers include AI Smart Listing, which automates product listings by generating and prefilling attributes based on images or keywords.
Paired with Smart Product Optimisation, sellers can easily refine their visuals and content within minutes.
Another feature is Lazada IM Shop Assistant (LISA), an AI-powered chatbot that enhances customer engagement and responds automatically to queries outside business hours.
Asked how Lazada is improving its last-mile delivery and fulfilment network in Malaysia to support sellers better and enhance customer experience, especially in underserved areas, Ramiro said Lazada implements best-in-class AI technology across logistics operations to optimise delivery efficiency.
Using geolocation, AI tracks orders in real-time and dynamically plans and calculates vehicle routes to ensure the most efficient deliveries, he said. 'This enables us to minimise costs, reduce transit times, and enhance overall delivery reliability – ensuring a seamless experience for both sellers and customers, especially in underserved areas.'
Commenting on Lazada's cross-border e-commerce plans, Ramiro said the platform sees strong opportunities to expand within Asean, driven by regional efforts such as the the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year.
'We already offer a range of tools and resources to facilitate cross-border readiness, including AI-driven features like translations that bridge language barriers, robust support programmes through Lazada University that help sellers better understand diverse customer bases and advanced logistics solutions to enable fast, accurate, and cost-efficient cross-border deliveries,' he added.
Malaysian consumers today value quality and competitive pricing, Ramiro said
'Our earlier report, Artificial Intelligence Adoption in eCommerce in Malaysia, shows that AI plays a significant role in helping buyers sift through reviews and discounts to find the best deals. Four in five Malaysians trust AI to deliver personalised recommendations aligned with their needs, often relying on chatbots, translations and visual product searches – the three most commonly used AI features when shopping.
'To help sellers meet these shifts, Lazada provides tools like Lazada Business Advisor and Lazzie Seller, which leverage AI to deliver store risk assessments, business advice, and key metrics. With actionable insights into consumer trends, inventory tips, and pricing suggestions, sellers are better equipped to build efficient and successful businesses,' Ramiro said.

Malaysia retains foreign investors despite US-China tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite geopolitical tensions between the US and China, foreign investors remain in Malaysia. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia has not seen any cancellations of investment commitments so far. "The ones already in Malaysia continue to stay, and those committed have not pulled out, but those yet to commit are reconsidering," he said during a press conference at the Regional Socialisation of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030 event on Thursday (June 12). Tengku Zafrul said the ministry is pleased with the country's investment performance for the first quarter, announced on Wednesday. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) reported that Malaysia secured RM89.8bil in approved investments for the first quarter of the financial year 2025 (1Q25), a steady 3.7% year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. These investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. "Usually, the first quarter is softer as decisions are made towards the end. We were quite pleasantly surprised with this number," said Tengku Zafrul. However, he cautioned that making investment forecasts for the future is not easy, as many companies are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to dynamic geopolitical issues. He said Malaysia is currently maintaining its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast for this year. Commenting on trade negotiations between the US and China, he said Malaysia views the development positively. "Things are showing progress in the right direction. We will have a positive spillover if these two countries can do more together," he said. Tengku Zafrul stated that negotiations between Malaysia and the US have been ongoing virtually. He will visit the US on June 18 to meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He said the main goal is to reduce the 24% tariff, and for certain sectors important to both countries, Malaysia aims to negotiate further to lower the tariff rate to below the 10% floor tariff. "It is not going to be easy. What is important is to show that Malaysia and the US's relationship in terms of trade and investment is complementary. We are not competing against the US," he said. "A lot of things we do actually strengthen and complement US businesses both in the US and Malaysia. So it is a win-win relationship," he said. He said the ministry is also enhancing enforcement to address trade diversion issues and ensure Malaysian exporters are considered.

Malaysia braces for "tough" tariff talks with US, readies fallback offer

KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming tariff negotiations between Malaysia and the United States will be "tough" but essential to reinforce both countries' complementary trade ties, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said the ministry's Deputy Secretary-General (Trade), Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, who has been appointed chief negotiator, would lead on the technical groundwork ahead of the talks, allowing him to focus on strategic-level discussions. "I'll be going to the US with our chief negotiator, Mastura. Negotiations have been ongoing virtually, but a physical meeting is necessary," he said at a press conference during the Regional Socialisation of the AEC Strategic Plan under the Asean Community Vision 2045. "If Mastura manages to settle most of the technical matters, there will be less on my plate. But it's not going to be easy, and that's the reality. What's important is to demonstrate that the Malaysia-US trade and investment relationship is complementary. We are not undercutting or competing against the US," he added. Tengku Zafrul will travel to Washington on June 18 to resume negotiations over tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He is scheduled to meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, as well as other officials from the US administration and investors. Meanwhile, Mastura told Business Times that Malaysia is prepared to present a fallback proposal in its ongoing tariff negotiations with the US should Washington deem its original offer "insufficient". She said Malaysia's upcoming engagement in Washington would be a timely opportunity to re-engage US officials after earlier talks were postponed. "I believe the US is currently more focused on its court cases and negotiations with China. They had earlier postponed our physical meeting," she said on the sidelines of the event held here, today. "We will take the opportunity of the minister's visit to meet with them and get their feedback on our initial offer. If that's not sufficient for them to consider, we're ready with a second layer of proposals to keep the negotiations moving," she added. Mastura did not disclose the details of either the initial or fallback offer. Earlier, on April 24, Tengku Zafrul led a high-level delegation to Washington, where he held talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Greer. During that meeting, Tengku Zafrul stressed the importance of sustained engagement and reiterated Malaysia's commitment to finding constructive solutions to the concerns raised by the US. Malaysia has expressed its readiness to negotiate in four key areas, namely narrowing the trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, strengthening technology protection and security and exploring the potential for a bilateral trade agreement. On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced tariff measures affecting around 60 countries, including a 24 per cent levy on most Malaysian goods. However, the tariffs have been temporarily suspended for 90 days, with the exemption set to expire on July 8.

Investors hesitant amid global economic concerns, says Tengku Zafrul

Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said it is becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: Foreign investors are taking a cautious approach towards new investments in Malaysia due to global economic uncertainties, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said today. He warned that attracting new investors would be challenging in the current climate, noting that while existing investors in Malaysia remained committed, newcomers were showing hesitation. Advertisement 'Those who have committed have not pulled out. But the ones that have not committed are now thinking (whether to invest or not),' he told reporters during the regional launch of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. 'When we have discussions with companies, we understand their concerns. Many (investors) are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to the dynamic geopolitical situation, especially between the US and China. 'New companies looking to invest want to assess the global situation first,' Tengku Zafrul added. When asked about Malaysia's RM89 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of the year – up 3.7% from the same period last year – Tengku Zafrul said it was 'pleasantly surprising' given typical first-quarter sluggishness. 'In terms of foreign investment, it is almost 70% of the investment. And at the same time, we see that the biggest sector is services, especially the digital economy,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is expected to travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over the US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He said the Malaysian government hopes to persuade Washington to reduce import duties for certain sectors to below 10%. 'We also want to ensure that our local companies exporting to the US – especially in sectors such as furniture and downstream palm oil – are taken into account,' Tengku Zafrul said, adding that these sectors 'are not really in competition' with American industries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
