Banks earnings will be reduced in Q1FY26 due to weak loan growth, lower margins and soft fee: Report

India Gazette15 hours ago
New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Banks are expected to report muted earnings for the first quarter of FY26 because of weak loan growth, lower margins, seasonally soft fee income, and higher slippages weigh on performance, according to a report by IIFL Capital.
The report estimates that banks' profit after tax (PAT) will decline by 2 per cent year-on-year and 4 per cent quarter-on-quarter.
It said, 'We expect muted loan growth, NIM contraction, seasonally weak fee income and higher slippages to weigh on banks' 1Q PAT (-2 per cent yoy/-4 per cent qoq).'
Business momentum remained sluggish during the quarter, with system-wide loan and deposit growth staying somewhat flat on a sequential basis.
The report noted that system loan growth slowed to 9.6 per cent year-on-year, down from 11 per cent in the previous quarter.
On a quarter-to-date basis, loan growth was just 0.4 per cent until June 13, compared to the usual 1.5-2.0 per cent growth seen in the first quarter of the past few years.
Loan growth continued to moderate across segments, except MSME loans which grew at mid-teen levels.
Other segments remained weak, with NBFC lending flat year-on-year, large corporates up just 1 per cent, vehicle loans rising 6 per cent, and housing and unsecured loans growing 9 per cent.
The report expects net interest margins (NIMs) to contract by 8-25 basis points quarter-on-quarter in Q1. The decline in margins is driven by fall in loan yields of 10-20 basis points, which is more to offsets the decline in deposit rates.
Savings account rates have been reduced by 20-350 basis points since December 2024, while retail term deposit rates have fallen by 20-100 basis points. Wholesale deposit rates also cooled off by 1 percentage point in the quarter.
The report pointed out that average system liquidity turned into a surplus of Rs 2 trillion in Q1, compared to a deficit of Rs 1.7 trillion in the previous quarter.
However, lower loan demand and the reduction in deposit rates have resulted in a fall in average outstanding spreads, by 9 basis points for PSU banks and 26 basis points for private banks till May.
Seasonally weak fee income and sticky operating expenses are expected to lead to negative jaws for most banks, resulting in flat core pre-provision operating profit (PPOP) growth.
Additionally, credit costs are likely to inch up due to seasonal rise in slippages and ageing provisions.
The report expects margins to continue contracting by a cumulative 22-35 basis points till the second quarter of FY26. Margins are likely to stabilise in Q3 and begin to expand again from Q4 onwards. (ANI)

GST Collections Rise 6.2% To Touch Rs 1.85 Lakh Crore In June

New Delhi: India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose to Rs 1.85 lakh crore during June this year, marking a 6.2 per cent increase compared to the same month of the previous year, according to official data released on Tuesday. Although collections registered a robust growth to remain above Rs 1.8 lakh crore, they were lower than the all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore recorded in April and Rs 2.01 lakh crore in May. As GST completes 8 years of its rollout on Tuesday, the government said that the collections have doubled over the past five years to reach a record Rs 22.08 lakh crore in FY25, up from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in FY21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that eight years after GST was introduced on July 1, 2017, it stands out as a landmark reform that has reshaped India's economic landscape. "By reducing the compliance burden, it has greatly improved the Ease of Doing Business, particularly for small and medium enterprises. GST has also served as a powerful engine for economic growth, while fostering true cooperative federalism by making states equal partners in this journey to integrate India's market," the Prime Minister said in a statement on X. The number of taxpayers has more than doubled from 60 lakh to over 1.51 crore over the last 8 years under the GST regime. The average monthly collection stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore in 2024-25, a blockbuster year. In 2020–21, the total collection was Rs 11.37 lakh crore, with a monthly average of Rs 95,000 crore. The following year, it rose to Rs 14.83 lakh crore, and then to Rs 18.08 lakh crore in 2022–23. In 2023–24, GST collections reached Rs 20.18 lakh crore, showing consistent growth in compliance and economic activity. The One-Nation One-Tax made tax compliance easier, reduced costs for businesses, and allowed goods to move freely across states. It brought together a wide range of indirect taxes under one umbrella by replacing levies like excise duty, service tax, VAT and others. This helped remove the cascading effect of taxes and brought consistency in the tax system across the country. According to a Deloitte survey, 85 per cent of taxpayers have reported 'a positive experience with GST' and view it as a more simplified and transparent tax process that facilitated the ease of doing business. A study by the Finance Ministry noted that GST helped households save at least four per cent on monthly expenses in total. Consumers now spend less on daily necessities. GST has also transformed the logistics industry. Long queues of trucks at state borders and corruption-prone checkpoints have become a thing of the past. Goods now move faster and more freely across state lines. Transport time has improved by over 33 per cent, according to several studies. Companies have cut down on fuel costs, and major highways are less congested.

'We're Going To Have A Deal For Much Less Tariffs': Trump Confident On India-US Trade Pact

Last Updated: India and the US have been negotiating over a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) before the critical July 9 deadline of the 90-day pause on tariff escalations. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) expressed confidence that India and the United States will soon finalise a trade deal, emphasising that the agreement would involve 'much less tariffs", helping both nations become more competitive. 'I think we are going to have a deal with India. And that is going to be a different kind of a deal. It is going to be a deal where we are able to go in and compete. Right now, India does not accept anybody in. I think India is going to do that, and if they do that, we are going to have a deal for much less tariffs," Trump said. India and the US have been negotiating over a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) before the critical July 9 deadline of the 90-day pause on tariff escalations. India has adopted a tougher stance on agricultural issues as high-stakes trade negotiations with the United States enter a critical phase, government sources confirmed on Monday. The Indian delegation, led by Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, has extended its stay in Washington, D.C., beyond the originally planned talks on Thursday and Friday, as both sides race to finalise an interim trade agreement ahead of the July 9 deadline, according to reports from ANI. This urgency stems from the threat of the return of 26% reciprocal tariffs — punitive duties first imposed during the Trump administration on April 2. Though temporarily suspended for 90 days, these tariffs are set to automatically snap back if no deal is reached. A senior official warned bluntly, 'Failure in these negotiations will trigger the immediate reinstatement of the 26% tariff structure." On the other hand, the United States is pushing for lower duties on its agricultural exports, including apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. India, meanwhile, is demanding preferential access for its labour-intensive exports, such as textiles, garments, gems and jewellery, leather products, as well as agricultural goods like shrimp, oilseeds, grapes, and bananas. Beyond the current interim talks, both nations are also laying the groundwork for a comprehensive Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with the first phase targeted for completion by fall 2024. The long-term goal is ambitious — to more than double bilateral trade from the current $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030.
