Padel could come to Rotherham under new plans
The application to transform a vacant industrial unit in Hellaby would see several indoor padel courts built alongside a small cafe and bar.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has supported the proposal, describing the development as a "fantastic attribute for the Rotherham area".
The LTA said there were currently no padel courts in Rotherham and praised the facility's potential to boost participation in what it calls the "fastest-growing sport in the world".
Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, played on a smaller enclosed court, and is designed to be more accessible and sociable than traditional tennis.
The site, Unit 1, Sandbeck Way, is currently a vacant truck park and distribution warehouse which dates back to the 1970s, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
According to the applicant the building is no longer viable as a warehouse due to modern demands and structural limitations and has stood vacant since 2023.
The applicant said the centre would create up to 12 jobs, including roles for padel coaches, cleaning and maintenance staff, and a full-time site manager.
Parking provision would be expanded from the existing 14 spaces to a minimum of 37, with an additional 14 overspill spaces available at the nearby Trinity House unit. Eight parking bays would be equipped with electric vehicle charging points.
It would operate from 7am to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 9pm at weekends.
The application is currently under consideration by Rotherham Council's planning department.

Shubman Gill: India's elegant captain
Shubman Gill will fly home to India with plenty of credit after a sensational campaign with the bat against England and a hard-earned series draw in his first outing as Test captain. The stylish batsman scored a remarkable 754 runs in five Tests, falling just 20 shy of Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing series record for an Indian cricketer. Gill, nicknamed "Prince", arrived in England in early June under intense pressure and with a modest Test average of 35. Not only was he succeeding Rohit Sharma as captain, he was also filling the number four slot vacated by the great Virat Kohli, who followed Rohit into Test retirement in May. But Gill has led from the front in spectacular style, combining an effortless elegance with an ability to go through the gears and innovate when necessary. The 25-year-old scored 147 in his first innings of the series at Headingley. During the second Test at Edgbaston he compiled a majestic 269 in the first innings and a turbo-charged 161 in the second innings as India won to level the series. After a quiet third Test at Lord's, won by the hosts, Gill returned to form in Manchester, grafting for 103 in 238 balls as the tourists battled successfully to draw the match and keep the series alive. An unnecessary first-innings run-out in the fifth Test at the Oval left him an agonising 31 runs short of Gavaskar's mark and he fell for just 11 in his final innings of the campaign. Gill grew into his role as captain during a series in which he faced several challenges, including the vocal presence of several senior players and the limited availability of paceman Jasprit Bumrah. The series was still alive heading into the final match in London but India appeared to be sliding inexorably towards defeat before England suffered a dramatic collapse, with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj doing most of the damage. The nervy six-run win turned a potential 3-1 series defeat into a 2-2 draw, dramatically changing the narrative, and Gill collected India's player-of-the-series award to add gloss to his tour. - Child prodigy - Born in Fazilka, near the border with Pakistan, Gill moved to Mohali aged eight to be closer to better cricket facilities. As a boy he wanted to know what Kohli's scores and achievements were when he was at an equivalent age. And when Kohli, a former India captain, first saw his eventual successor in the nets, he said he had not even had 10 percent of Gill's talent when the same age. Gill made his one-day international debut in 2019 but it was in his first Test series, in Australia in 2020/21, that he caught the eye, notably with a fluent 91 in India's thrilling series-clinching win at the Gabba. His first Test hundred came in Chattogram at the end of 2022 and a month later, aged 23, he became the youngest player to make a one-day international double-century, smashing 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand. But it has not all been plain-sailing for the prodigiously talented batsman, whose average dipped below 30 after a duck against England in Hyderabad last year. Rahul Dravid, the then India coach, resisted the temptation to drop Gill, who went on to make two centuries during a series India won 4-1. Gill, who has skippered India in T20 cricket and leads the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, was the man chosen to replace Rohit as Test skipper despite his relative youth. He has passed his first major test, with elated India great Sachin Tendulkar posting on social media after Monday's thrilling success: "Series 2–2, Performance 10/10!" jw/jdg/nf

Novak Djokovic withdraws from Cincinnati Open for second consecutive year
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open for the second consecutive year, meaning that he will arrive at the U.S. Open in New York City having not played since Wimbledon, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. A spokesperson for the tournament confirmed Djokovic's absence from the ATP Masters 1,000 tournament, whose main draws begin Aug. 7. Advertisement This time last year, Djokovic was coming off winning Olympic gold against Carlos Alcaraz in Paris. He had won the tennis title he craved above all else; playing another tournament was not on the agenda. This year, he is in search of rhythm that allows him to compete for the four most important tournaments in the sport, the majors, while protecting his body enough to do it with consistency at 38. He tried the 'play regularly' version, playing the 'Sunshine Double' of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif. and the Miami Open in Florida for the first time in six years. He lost early in both events, and then did so again at the Madrid Open. That led him to withdraw from the Italian Open in Rome, and he has taken the minimalist path since.

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris signs new contract
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has signed a new contract at the Stadium of Light running to the summer of 2028. Le Bris, 49, was appointed in late June of last year and guided Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs in his first season. Sunderland's first top-flight season since 2016-17 begins at home to West Ham United on Saturday week. Advertisement 'The connection I have with the staff, players and supporters has been natural and we shared many great moments together,' Le Bris said in a statement. 'The collective ambition is there to see and now there is a desire to become stronger. I can feel the energy and intent to push forward, and we need that in the next challenges we will face. In every part of the organisation, everyone has their own part to play, and we are all aligned.' Le Bris had previously not worked in England but Sunderland, with the youngest squad in the Championship, won nine of their first twelve league games under the Frenchman. That form could not continue but it showed Le Bris' organisational impact on the team. A side that had finished 16th in 2023-24 came fourth a year later. That led to a dramatic play-off semi-final victory over Coventry City and an even more dramatic Wembley win against Sheffield United, when Sunderland were 1-0 down at half-time and won the match in the last seconds. Sunderland have made eight new signings over the summer and Le Bris' contract extension, according to sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, 'provides clarity going into the Premier League season'. Speakman added: 'But more importantly it recognises his contribution and continued commitment to the Club. Régis has an unrelenting desire for progression that matches our own and we look forward to continuing our partnership throughout the upcoming season, as we move forward with aligned objectives that reflect our shared ambition.'
