Justin Rose hunts Tommy Fleetwood's lead at FedEx St Jude Championship

Fleetwood fired a one-under 69 in the third round, just edging out fellow Englishman Justin Rose.
The tension between the two rose early in the round after Fleetwood double-bogeyed the third hole while Rose made birdie, a three-shot swing that dramatically cut into the 34-year-old's lead.

Fleetwood responded well, rebuilding his lead to three shots. But his advantage narrowed again on the 18th hole, where a drive into the rough led to a bogey.
World number one Scottie Scheffler also hurled himself into contention with six birdies, finishing Saturday two shots off the lead on 65.
JJ Spaun and Andrew Novak are a shot further back, tied for fourth on 11 under par.
Only the top 70 in the season-long FedEx rankings have qualified for the event, although Rory McIlroy opted not to play this week, with the top 50 after the tournament reaching next week's BMW Championship.
The top 30 after that will contest the Tour Championship in pursuit of a 10million dollar (£7.4million) bonus.

2025 BMW Championship prediction, best bets & golf odds: Maryland made to measure for McIlroy

Attentions turn to the Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland on Thursday when the BMW Championship gets underway, and Tommy Fleetwood will be hoping he can put the disappointment of last week behind him for the second event in the FedEx Cup play-offs. The world No. 15 went into the final round of the St Jude Championship with a one-stroke lead, but after bogeying the penultimate hole, he finished one behind Justin Rose and JJ Spaun, who went on to play the play-off. Rose was eventually victorious, extending Fleetwood's winless streak on the PGA Tour to 162 events. Could this week finally be the time he breaks his duck? Betting sites rated Fleetwood's chances pretty highly, and the only players with shorter BMW Championship odds are the usual suspects: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele. BMW Championship Betting Preview: Scheffler to be the pick of the Americans The BMW Championship has only been held at Caves Valley once, and that was back in 2021, when Patrick Cantlay was victorious after beating Bryson DeChambeau in an epic six-hole playoff. The pair both carded second rounds of 60, finished four shots clear of the rest of the chasing pack. You can get 25/1 on golf betting sites on Cantlay winning again, but he's not had the best 2025, failing to win any of his last 17 tournaments and recording just four top 10 finishes. The course should suit Scheffler more than the one at TPC Southwind last week, where he still finished on 15 under in a tie for third. So far this year, the American has finished in the top ten in 14 of the 17 tournaments played and won four of them, including the PGA Championship and The Open. Unsurprisingly, 1/4 is the best price available on betting apps for him to finish in the top 10, but William Hill are offering 6/4 on him finishing as the top-ranked American. Well-rested McIlroy to reap rewards McIlroy opted to miss last week's St Jude Championship, and he will hope that the break will give him the edge over the rest of the field in Maryland. Power and accuracy off the tee could be key at Caves Valley which historically favours big-hitters who can find distance on the fairway and that is a key aspect to McIlroy's game. The Northern Irishman has also been gaining shots on the green this season with his putting helping him hole clutch pars and record low scores at major tournaments. McIlroy also finished fourth here back in 2021 propelled up the leaderboard by an opening-round score of 64, though shooting 70 on the Friday effectively ended his chances at a win. He's 14/1 to make another hot start and lead after the first round, but our preference is on him celebrating his fourth win of the year. Fleetwood to bounce back He might have been disappointed last week, but Fleetwood has had a consistent year so far, missing the cut just once in his 17 tournaments played. He has also finished in the top 10 six times and was runner-up at the Travelers Championship in New England back in June. World No 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler suffers huge blow ahead of PGA Tour playoff event

Scottie Scheffler will be without his caddie Ted Scott when he tees it up at this week's BMW Championship in a huge blow for golf's world No 1. Scott has been a mainstay in Scheffler's professional career for the past four years, but a family emergency last weekend saw him rush back to his home in Louisiana. The change in circumstance led to Scheffler turning to a chaplain and close friend to help him out with the final round of the FedEx St Jude on Sunday, and now it'll be all change again this week. The recent Open champion and four-time major winner will have Mike Cromie on his bag instead, as he continues his foray into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scott's personal matter has so far not yet been disclosed, but it is expected Scheffler will field questions about his close friend's absence as the week progresses. The world No 1 is due to begin the tournament on Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, where he will be paired with Rory McIlroy for the first round of the penultimate tournament of the season. Cromie has served as the caddie for six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk in the past. Kirk, however, fell short of qualifying for the BMW Championship at 51st in the FedExCup rankings - the top 50 advanced to this week's event. It could turn into a lucrative weekend for the stand-in caddie if Scheffler is in his usual imperious form... form that has earned Scott an eye-watering amount over the past few years. The American's regular wins have even seen Scott earn more than most players on the PGA Tour, as he takes home an estimated 10% of Scheffler's prize money. This season he has already banked $20.36m in tournament prize money, giving Scott just over $2m for himself. On top of that, Scheffler has another $23m in bonus money - but it is unclear how much commission his caddie is on when it comes to that.

Scheffler-McIlroy, Rose-Spaun paired at BMW Championship

August 12 - The top two players in the world will play side by side in the first two rounds of the BMW Championship, as the PGA Tour paired Scottie Scheffler with Rory McIlroy to begin the penultimate tournament of the season. Scheffler and McIlroy are slated to tee off 11:16 a.m. ET on Thursday and 1:38 p.m. on Friday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. They're not only 1-2 in the world rankings, but also in the FedEx Cup race as the season winds down. The duo combined to win three of the four major championships this year and Scheffler is the defending FedEx Cup champion, while McIlroy has won it three times. When Scheffler and McIlroy played together in the first two rounds of the PGA Championship, alongside Xander Schauffele, Scheffler shot 5 under par on his way to capturing the major title, while McIlroy struggled to 1 over par and eked into the weekend. This will also mark McIlroy's first tournament since he tied for seventh at the Open Championship, won by Scheffler. McIlroy skipped the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the playoff opener. There is no 36-hole cut at the second playoff leg in Owings Mills, Md., but only the top 30 in the points standings following Sunday will move on to the Tour Championship next week. Schauffele, 43rd in the standings after an injury-interrupted season, needs a stellar finish to crack the top 30. He'll play his first two rounds with Michael Kim. Other notable pairings include Rickie Fowler with Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas -- Nos. 48 and 49 in the points standings entering the week -- and Englishman Justin Rose with J.J. Spaun. Rose and Spaun went to a playoff at the St. Jude, and Rose prevailed on the third playoff hole to beat the U.S. Open champion. Spaun and Rose sit 3-4 in the season standings. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who missed out on that playoff after a late bogey, will play alongside Justin Thomas. --Field Level Media
