Fleetwood responded well, rebuilding his lead to three shots. But his advantage narrowed again on the 18th hole, where a drive into the rough led to a bogey.
World number one Scottie Scheffler also hurled himself into contention with six birdies, finishing Saturday two shots off the lead on 65.
JJ Spaun and Andrew Novak are a shot further back, tied for fourth on 11 under par.
Only the top 70 in the season-long FedEx rankings have qualified for the event, although Rory McIlroy opted not to play this week, with the top 50 after the tournament reaching next week's BMW Championship.
The top 30 after that will contest the Tour Championship in pursuit of a 10million dollar (£7.4million) bonus.

McIlroy also finished fourth here back in 2021 propelled up the leaderboard by an opening-round score of 64, though shooting 70 on the Friday effectively ended his chances at a win. He's 14/1 to make another hot start and lead after the first round, but our preference is on him celebrating his fourth win of the year. Fleetwood to bounce back He might have been disappointed last week, but Fleetwood has had a consistent year so far, missing the cut just once in his 17 tournaments played. He has also finished in the top 10 six times and was runner-up at the Travelers Championship in New England back in June. Scottie Scheffler will be without his caddie Ted Scott when he tees it up at this week's BMW Championship in a huge blow for golf's world No 1. Scott has been a mainstay in Scheffler's professional career for the past four years, but a family emergency last weekend saw him rush back to his home in Louisiana. The change in circumstance led to Scheffler turning to a chaplain and close friend to help him out with the final round of the FedEx St Jude on Sunday, and now it'll be all change again this week. The recent Open champion and four-time major winner will have Mike Cromie on his bag instead, as he continues his foray into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scott's personal matter has so far not yet been disclosed, but it is expected Scheffler will field questions about his close friend's absence as the week progresses. The world No 1 is due to begin the tournament on Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, where he will be paired with Rory McIlroy for the first round of the penultimate tournament of the season. Cromie has served as the caddie for six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk in the past. Kirk, however, fell short of qualifying for the BMW Championship at 51st in the FedExCup rankings - the top 50 advanced to this week's event. It could turn into a lucrative weekend for the stand-in caddie if Scheffler is in his usual imperious form... form that has earned Scott an eye-watering amount over the past few years. Scheffler and McIlroy are slated to tee off 11:16 a.m. ET on Thursday and 1:38 p.m. on Friday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. They're not only 1-2 in the world rankings, but also in the FedEx Cup race as the season winds down. The duo combined to win three of the four major championships this year and Scheffler is the defending FedEx Cup champion, while McIlroy has won it three times. When Scheffler and McIlroy played together in the first two rounds of the PGA Championship, alongside Xander Schauffele, Scheffler shot 5 under par on his way to capturing the major title, while McIlroy struggled to 1 over par and eked into the weekend.
