Claims made by HDFC Bank don't add up: Lilavati Trust; HDFC denies charges

In a fresh attack on HDFC Bank MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMM Trust) on Wednesday said the claims made by the bank about a single loan are not consistent and it has never produced any official loan ledger or agreement in court regarding its transaction with the Trust.
Refuting allegations, an HDFC Bank spokesperson in a statement said the allegations and insinuations made by the trustees are devoid of any iota of truth whatsoever and neither the bank nor its CEO has engaged in any activity that is illegal, unethical or improper.
The LKMM Trust manages and runs the prestigious Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. Various documents from the bank reflect widely inconsistent loan amounts for instance, Rs 4.8 crore was cited initially, Rs 450 crore in another filing, and now Rs 65.22 crore, LKMM said in a statement. "How can one of India's largest banks make three different claims about a single loan, and not back it up with a basic loan agreement and ledger?" LKMM Prashant Mehta, Permanent Trustee wondered.
The LKMM Trust and Prashant Mehta maintained that they had never taken a loan from HDFC Bank, and these inconsistencies support that claim, rather than refute it. The bank's refusal to present even basic documents in court undermines the credibility of the entire case and hints at deliberate narrative manipulation, it alleged. The Trust also alleged that the Rs 2.05 crore bribe money was paid to HDFC Bank MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to help Chetan Mehta group remain illegally in control of the LKMM Trust. However, the HDFC Bank's spokesperson said, "We reiterate our unequivocal, categorical and unambiguous denial and condemnation of these egregiously malicious, false and defamatory allegations and insinuations." The bank said it is concerned about its stakeholders and is on the verge of taking strong legal actions as per expert advice, against those who are initiating these baseless allegations with malafide and ulterior motives or involved in propagating the same. Members of the public and media are urged to exercise their critical judgement in reporting or amplifying the unsubstantiated allegations and insinuations, the spokesperson added.

Bengaluru cops nab Nigerian woman trying to peddle 5.3kg MDMA worth Rs 10.5 crore

Bengaluru: In one of the biggest drug busts in recent times, a 25-year-old Nigerian was arrested by Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths when she was trying to sell MDMA crystals weighing over 5.3kg, and valued at around Rs 10.5 crore, near Rajanukunte. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused has been identified as Akinwunmi Princess Ifeoluwa, alias Princess, a resident of Uttam Nagar in Nawada, New Delhi. CCB's anti-narcotics wing (ANW) police inspector Rakshith AK got a tip-off around noon on June 10 about a foreign national trying to sell drugs in Tarahunase village, 6km from Rajanukunte. Rakshith alerted his seniors, including assistant commissioner of police Mahananda HK, who formed a special team to nab the peddler. When cops rushed to Tarahunase village, they found a woman with a bag seemingly waiting for someone. After confirming she was the peddler flagged by the informant, police detained her around 4pm. When police asked her to show her bag, she didn't cooperate initially. Eventually, she confessed she had come to New Delhi in Oct 2021 using a student visa. She claimed she wanted to get admission at a private deemed-to-be university, but when she didn't get a proper response from the college, she didn't enrol and started working as a hairdresser and pedicurist in the national capital. As she was unable to earn enough to lead a lavish life, she went into the drug peddling business. She allegedly met another Nigerian woman named Asa, who instructed her to take drugs to Bengaluru by bus and hand them over to someone. Accordingly, Princess packed the MDMA crystal in packets and reached Bengaluru on June 10. While she was waiting for Asa's message about the man to whom she was supposed to hand over the drugs, she was caught by cops. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police found 5,325 grams of MDMA crystals and an iPhone on her. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and the Foreigners Act, 1946, for overstaying. Further investigation is on to nab Asa and the others involved in the matter.

City relives horror of 1988 IA crash

Ahmedabad: Memories from the past on Thursday returned to haunt Amdavadis. Thirty-seven years ago, on Oct 19, 1988, Ahmedabad had witnessed a similar air tragedy when Indian Airlines Flight 113 crashed near the airport, killing 133 out of the 135 people on board, including six crew members and pilots. The flight to Ahmedabad had taken off from Mumbai airport early that morning. The crash's two survivors were a young businessman, Ashok Agrawal, and then Gujarat Vidyapith vice-chancellor, Vinod Tripathi. The flight crashed in the Kotarpur area, 2.5km from the approach end of the airstrip. This spot is on the other end of the strip where the London-bound Air India flight crashed in a high-nose angle on Thursday, moments after take-off. Investigations into the 1988 crash later revealed that the pilots did not adhere to procedure under poor visibility conditions. Airport authorities were also held liable for not informing the aircraft about the prevailing poor visibility conditions. The Indian Airlines aircraft was a Boeing 737-2A8, registered VT-EAH, delivered to the airline in Dec 1970 and had accumulated 42,831 hours and 47,647 landings till the day of the tragedy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo A year after the crash, Indian Airlines offered to pay Rs 2 lakh as full and final settlement to relatives of each of the victims, the maximum amount allowed under Rules 17 and 22 of the Second Schedule to the Carriage by Air Act 1972. However, the victims' kin sued the airlines and airport authorities. A city civil court enhanced the compensation amount to a total of Rs 6 crore, with the liability divided between the airlines and airport authorities in the ratio of 70:30. Survivor Ashok Agrawal was ordered to be paid Rs 60 lakh compensation with 6% interest. Airport authorities appealed in the Gujarat high court, which reduced the compensation amount to Rs 45 lakh in 2009. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . 85 if not 100: e-bus plan in limbo, UT ready to settle for less

1 2 Chandigarh: Facing the imminent phasing out of 100 diesel buses and struggling to get 100 e-buses as their replacements for more than a year, the Chandigarh administration will now send a fresh proposal for procuring 85 new e-buses to the central govt. A UT official said the Transport Department would again prepare a detailed proposal and submit it to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Recently, the officers of the Transport Department also went to Delhi and held a meeting regarding the purchase of buses. "Under the current circumstances, the administration will float fresh tenders on its own. The terms and conditions will be the same as those set by the central govt. The tender will be floated after approval from the competent authority. From the start of the tendering process to the delivery of buses, it will take at least six months," said a UT official. The urgency for procuring the buses stems from the fact that out of the 358 diesel buses, 100 will complete their 15-year service limit by November this year, and these will have to be phased out. The CTU is the mainstay of the public transport system in the tricity, with Mohali having no tricity bus service available and Panchkula having a very limited local bus service. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Clean Warehouses = Safe Workplaces SearchMore Learn More Undo If these 100 buses are taken off the road, there would be a consequent reduction in bus services within the tricity. The process to replace these 100 diesel buses with e-buses started a couple of years ago. "The buses were being purchased under a central govt scheme, and even the tendering process was completed last year. But since then, litigation plagued the execution of the tender. Even if the tender materialises now, we are still unlikely to get the 100 buses before November," said the official. The new 100 e-buses were to be ultra-low entry (ULE) vehicles of 12m length. The existing e-buses with CTU are 9m long and of low entry. The 100 buses were being availed under the 'PM e-Bus Sewa' scheme. Earlier, e-buses were availed under phase II of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) India Scheme of the central govt. In the tendering process for the new e-buses, which concluded in March 2024, the lowest bid was Rs 61.8 per km.
