PENDLETON — Connor Gaskill, the Pendleton man sentenced to prison for causing a car crash that injured three men and killed another, has been assigned to the minimum security facility at Westville in northwestern Indiana.
Gaskill, 27, pleaded guilty in February to one count of causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and three counts of causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Gaskill's earliest release from prison is scheduled for February 2028, which will then start a two-year suspension of his driver's license.
On Sept. 29, 2022, Gaskill had been drinking at the Bottleworks in Indianapolis when he ran a stop sign at Delaware and 24th streets in Indianapolis. His car T-boned a Lyft driver's vehicle. The crash killed a passenger, Rashid Conteh, 22, of Carmel.
Among the DOC guidelines, prisoners who are expected to be released within 60 months are often assigned to Level 1 facilities, which are the second lowest level of classification and which typically feature dorm-like housing.
Gaskill still faces civil lawsuits from victims in the crash. A jury trial is set for August.

Oklahoma man sentenced to life for 2024 kidnapping, raping of Lyft driver

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A 21-year-old man who kidnapped and raped a metro Lyft driver in 2024 will now spend life in prison after the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office on Monday secured the sentence in a plea agreement. 21-year-old Andre Hunter was arrested on April 22, 2024, after Del City police said that he kidnapped and raped a 54-year-old Lyft driver. RELATED: Man accused of raping Lyft driver in Del City will go to jury trial Documents said Hunter requested that she take him to a Del City address, where, when Hunter and the 54-year-old victim reached the location, he moved behind her in the backseat and restrained her. Hunter reportedly told the woman that he would shoot her if she did not comply with his demands, and followed up by forcing her to drive to a nearby Del City park, where he was said to have raped her orally, anally and vaginally. 'He sexually assaulted her multiple times and then forced her back into the vehicle,' said Major Brad Cowden with the Del City Police Department in 2024. Following the assault, Hunter forced her to be a passenger in the car before driving her around and threatening to kill her again. He then left her at a Northeast Oklahoma City church before stealing her car and phone. Police later tracked him down, using an app that was on the victim's phone, and arrested him at Langston University. 'Utilized the Life360 app and determined that the vehicle was located on the campus of Langston University,' said Cowden in 2024. RELATED: Man arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting Lyft driver in Del City Hunter was charged with two counts of rape in the first degree, two counts of forcible oral sodomy, and one count each of sexual battery, kidnapping and robbery in the first degree. According to the District Attorney's Office, the case pleaded ahead of his jury trial, which was set for August 25. 'For 16 months now I have been a prisoner in my own life, bound by chains of anxietyand fear and a deep unshakeable sense of vulnerability, but today I am taking back mylife,' said the woman who was assaulted in her victim impact statement. 'You picked thewrong woman to mess with. I am strong and courageous to fight this fight, and I willalways be in the background fighting to make sure you never hurt another woman again.' Prior to the sexual assault, in February 2024, Hunter was granted bond, over the State's objection, for a case where he was charged with one count of possession of a firearm while on probation. He received 10 year maximum sentence for that case in May 2024. He also received a maximum sentence for possession of a firearm after juvenile adjudication and trafficking in illegal drugs. Those sentences will run consecutively for a total of 27 years in prison, while his life sentence will follow 27 years sentenced. 'Today, the survivor displayed extraordinary bravery by facing the man who terrorizedher,' said Vicki Zemp Behenna, Oklahoma County District Attorney. 'No one shouldever endure the fear and violence she suffered, yet she found the strength to stand in courtand make her voice heard. As she shared in her victim impact statement, today she tookback her power. Her courage is an inspiration and offers hope to other survivors. Lawsuit against Lyft alleges driver failed to intervene before ax murder

A lawsuit against Lyft is moving forward in federal court based on allegations that a driver for the San Francisco-based rideshare company brought an ax-wielding killer to the scene of the crime, according to court records. U.S. District Judge Victor Bolden denied a motion by Lyft to dismiss the lawsuit, which claims the company is liable for negligence and wrongful death in connection with a 2022 killing in Milford, Conn., court records show. According to the complaint, Ewen Dewitt took a Lyft ride in December 2022 to the home of his ex-girlfriend, 39-year-old Julie Minogue, where he broke into her house and killed her with an ax in front of two of her children. Dewitt carried the large ax in plain view during the ride, but the Lyft driver failed to call the police, notify someone or 'do anything to prevent this imminent attack' despite the 'bizarre behavior,' according to the complaint. The driver also allegedly stopped during the ride to allow his passenger to buy liquor and 'other supplies needed to carry out his heinous crime.' The lawsuit against Lyft was brought by Minogue's family, including her three children. In a February motion to dismiss the lawsuit, Lyft said Minogue was 'undoubtedly the victim of a heinous crime,' but the company 'simply lacked any legal duty to her,' court records show. Minogue was not a Lyft passenger and the attack occurred after the ride concluded, the company said. But in a ruling issued Friday, the federal judge disagreed with the company's arguments. 'It is true that Lyft would likely have no duty of care and thus could not be negligent if a Lyft driver drove past a crime taking place and did not intervene, or even if a passenger displaying no unusual behavior happened to commit a crime after being dropped off,' Bolden wrote in the order. 'But the circumstances in this case are different.' Bolden said the plaintiffs 'have presented sufficient factual allegations to plead that Lyft owed a duty of care, at least at this time.' In criminal court, Dewitt was sentenced to 40 years in prison in May after pleading guilty to murder. Another negligence lawsuit is pending against Milford police in connection with the murder. CT Insider, a local news outlet, reported that Minogue had reached out to police weeks before her death to complain of hundreds of harassing text messages from Dewitt, but an officer failed to follow up with an arrest warrant.

Rapist of Lyft driver sentenced to prison in Oklahoma under plea deal

A rapist has been sentenced to life in prison for his attack on a Lyft driver at a Del City park last year. Andre Hunter, 21, of Oklahoma City, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape, kidnapping and other crimes on Monday, Aug. 18. He attacked the driver of the ride-sharing service on April 18, 2024, after she picked him up, police reported. The driver told police he said he was going to kill her by shooting her if she resisted. His punishment was the result of a plea agreement and came one week before his jury trial was to begin in Oklahoma County District Court. 'For 16 months now I have been a prisoner in my own life, bound by chains of anxiety and fear and a deep unshakeable sense of vulnerability but today I am taking back my life,' the victim told Hunter in court Monday. 'You picked the wrong woman to mess with." In a news release, the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office said the plea agreement provided both certainty and finality. More: Two men, including suspect, die after officer-involved shooting at Enid hospital Sunday Prosecutors said they are able with plea agreements in sexual assault cases "to ensure accountability while sparing victims the trauma of publicly reliving their experiences in court." Hunter said in court he was sorry. Signing off on the deal was District Judge Heather Coyle, who took over the case from District Judge Cindy Truong. The victim criticized Truong last year for letting Hunter out of jail on a so-called TEEM bond while he awaited sentencing for drug and gun offenses. The rape took place two months after his release. "I was raped by him and the judicial system," the victim complained in a written statement. "She is supposed to protect us from people like him but didn't. SHE FAILED ME!!!" Truong did not respond to the criticism directly last year. The judge did say she issued a warrant for Hunter's arrest for violating his bond conditions before the rape. "The Court notified the proper authorities immediately upon issuance of the warrant," she also said. Hunter was arrested in Langston after dropping off the victim. He was tracked down because he had the victim's cellphone. He was located exiting the victim's vehicle. Hunter backed out of pleading guilty in April, even though he had made statements for a presentence report. At that time, he was going to let Judge Coyle decide his punishment. For the presentence report, he said he had lost his mind and could not remember what took place because of his use of ecstasy pills and meth. He also said he dropped out of Midwest City High School after being shot. He was ordered Monday to serve his life sentence after completing a 27-year sentence imposed last year for his drug and gun offenses.
