Texans WR John Metchie III named top trade target for 2025 offseason
With the offseason additions of Christian Kirk, Justin Watson, Braxton Berrios, Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, the Houston Texans could be parting ways with one of their veterans ahead of training camp this summer.
Pro Bowl target Nico Collins is a top-five receiver in the AFC and locked in long-term as C.J. Stroud's No. 1 weapon. Kirk, whom the Texans traded for from Jacksonville to avoid targeting him in free agency, should be the starting slot receiver this season. Higgins, Houston's first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, will likely start on the outside while Noel should compete for reps with Kirk and add value on special teams in the return game.
That leaves Xavier Hutchinson and John Metchie III on the outside looking in for 2025. According to Bleacher Report's Matt Holder, the latter might need a change of scenery if he plans on living up to his former second-round potential in a pivotal Year 4.
"That's a lot of mouths to feed and could make the Alabama product expendable over the coming months," Holder wrote. "Metchie is entering a contract year and likely won't be brought back with the organization's investments in the former Cyclones. But he was a top 50 draft pick who has plenty of talent to be more productive with a bigger opportunity elsewhere. Also, the 24-year-old was reportedly receiving trade interest heading into last season."
Houston had high hopes for Metchie when it traded up to the No. 44 pick in 2022 with the Cleveland Browns to select him. Despite coming off a torn ACL in his final college season, the Texans believed his smooth route-running and attention to detail in space would elevate the passsing attack for Davis Mills and a new-look Texans' offense.
But Metchie was forced to miss the entirety of his rookie season after being diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, a rare but treatable form of cancer. With nearly two years removed from the game, Metchie has been slow to return to full speed, therefore costing him time in Houston to become a standout roleplayer.
Over the past two seasons, Metchie has totaled just 40 catches for 412 yards and a touchdown reception. Still, the former All-SEC standout has the skills to become a stable No. 3 target, which could lead to a change of scenery in his future.

IU softball commit overcame 3 ACL tears to lead Greenfield-Central. 'She's a different breed'

GREENWOOD — Josie White remembers sitting with her Greenfield-Central softball coach at an IU camp a few years ago, forced to watch off to the side as she recovered from a torn ACL. 'If I have to do this again, I'm quitting. This sucks,' she told her coach. "And that was just the first time," White said. 'I went through it two more times.' The second half of that quote is enough to make most anyone do a double take. Greenfield-Central senior Josie White — who just last week announced her commitment to IU softball — tore her ACL three times during her high school career. The second occurrence limited her to just 18 games as a sophomore, then the third ended her junior campaign after only 12 games. And each time, the sure-handed shortstop worked her way back. Noblesville honors assistant's memory: 'If you were coached by him, you knew what love was.' IHSAA softball semistate: Statewide scores, schedule, recaps "I knew I wasn't ready to be done," she said following Saturday's 6-1 loss to Floyd Central in the Class 4A semistate semifinal. "I love softball and even before I committed, I was like, 'I'm not done. I can't give up this sport. I have no reason to quit.'" 'She's a different breed,' added senior first baseman Leilani Forshey. 'Not very many people would tear their ACL three times and be like, 'Yeah, let's go back. Let's try it again.'' White played the entirety of her senior season and used those 27 games to make up for lost time, batting .500 with 51 hits, 41 runs and 13 RBIs. She was nearly perfect in the field, recording 95 putouts and 16 assists on 116 chances with 12 double plays, and showed off her wheels, swiping a team-high 16 bases. A career .467 hitter (134 hits in 80 games), White scored twice as part of a stirring come-from-behind win over Pendleton Heights (trailed 7-0) in the sectional, then went 3-for-4 with three runs scored amidst a regional rout of Lawrence North. On Saturday — one year since her most-recent knee surgery — White clocked a couple hits and scored Greenfield-Central's (19-8) lone run against the Highlanders. "It's been great (having White as a teammate). I couldn't be more thankful that she's been healthy this year," junior third baseman Savvanna Riall said, fighting back tears as she continued. "I've been playing with her since I was 10, so to see her have a full season and have a great one — that's pretty special." Those long-running ties and deep connections with her teammates helped White keep going these past few years, pushing her through the moments of doubt. She also played with junior second baseman Kristen Wineinger growing up, the two starting out at pitcher's helper and first base before moving to their current positions. At home, her parents — former college baseball and softball players themselves — have been a constant source of motivation. "I wanted to be like them — to be better than them," White smirked. "(My parents) got me here and I'm trying to use what they helped me build, my skills and everything." Asked what it's meant to play for Greenfield-Central and to lead the Cougars to their first sectional and regional championships since 2017, White replied: "It's just been huge." "I think everyone around me knows I try to lead by example as best I can and these people are just so amazing, as softball players and outside of it," she continued. "Great friendships have been built. I just loved being here."

East Carolina Football Preview 2025: Can the Pirates Keep the Momentum Going?

East Carolina should be a bowl program every was a long, ugly period from 2015 to 2020 when the Pirates couldn't buy a winning season, and after two of them under Mike Houston in 2021 and 2022, the wheels came off. East Carolina was 3-14 against FBS teams, the 2024 season was going nowhere, and then Houston was gone, Blake Harrell stepped in, and ...The schedule got way the wins that are there, and Harrell and ECU did that, got four victories in a row, got bowl eligible, and closed it all out with a Military Bowl win over NC ECU isn't winning the College Football Playoff National Championship, but it has to win the 50/50 games, maybe sneak by a tough home game - hello, Army, BYU, and/or Memphis - and ...East Carolina should be a bowl program. Harrell should have a good enough team to do it. East Carolina Pirates Preview 2025: Offense X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN - The Pirate offense wasn't bad over the first half of the season, and then it took off. The easier schedule had something to do with it, but overall, the attack finished 24th in the nation in total yards and averaged 32 points per game. - Kaitin Houser took over the offense at the midway point, and everything clicked. He threw for over 2,000 yards and 18 scores, but he threw 11 interceptions. - The Pirates return enough receivers to be okay, even after losing Chase Sowell to Iowa State. They'll have to battle for yards behind a reworked line. - Jimarion McCrimon is back at one tackle spot, and 6-6, 326-pound Emannuel Poku will work at either tackle or guard. Everything else is up in the air, but the Kyle Long (Maryland) and 340-pound Leivi Semaia (JUCO) are decent-looking guards who should fit in right away. East Carolina Pirates Preview 2025: Defense - The defense wasn't anything great, but it was wonderful in the red zone, came up with a ton of tackles for loss, and when it allowed 31 points or fewer, the offense did the rest. - The top linebackers are gone. Mike Edwards is done, and Zakye Barker is leaving for SMU, but Dameon Wilson is a former Missouri transfer who should shine in the middle. Kevon Merrell is a safety-sized outside defender who can move. Rhyeem Craig is back at his starting spot at a hybrid edge gig. - The portal is helping the interior with Xavier McIver (Houston), Justin Benton (Houston), and Rion Roseborough (Towson), bringing the 300-plus-pound size to the interior. JD Lampley earned All-AAC honors on the end. He's not a dominant pass rusher, but he's a solid all-around playmaker. - The East Carolina secondary has a nice mix of parts. Ja'Marley Riddle is a terrific young free safety who's all over the field, and in comes veteran playmaker Teagan Wilk, a four-year Pirate who's back after going to Houston last corners are a bit green, but TyMir Brown has been around the program, and Jordy Lowery is coming off a six-pick season at Western Carolina. East Carolina Pirates Key Player TyMir Brown, CB year, East Carolina started the season with star Shavon Revel at one corner - before getting hurt - and Isaiah Brown-Murray on the other. 3 former Cowboys with troubled pasts arrested within 72 hours of each other

3 former Cowboys with troubled pasts arrested within 72 hours of each other The Dallas Cowboys have never been strangers with the red flag industry. Ever since their dominance of the 1990s, they've served as the poster franchise for taking risks on players with questionable pasts. Some times it works out, other times it doesn't, but since Jerry Jones has been owner of the club, they're well known to give second and third chances. Three of the most recent second-chance players all found themselves in booking photos over a 72-hour period. On Thursday, it was reported that Greg Hardy, signed in 2015 after a domestic violence arrest, had been arrested on Wednesday afternoon or alleging assaulting a family member. In the early hours of Saturday, Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Also in the early hours of Saturday, recent second-round pick Kelvin Joseph was arrested after being involved in a fatal car crash. While some have tried to paint the NFL in a bad light when it comes to arrests, the reality is they have a lower arrest rate (2.5 k per 100,000) than the general public (4k per 100,000) does. It's only that every arrest of an NFL player makes headlines. And while it may seem like the Cowboys have a greater share of NFL arrests than other clubs, that's more than likely because their reputation precedes them. Hardy, most famously, signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the Cowboys after his 2014 arrest led to his release from the Carolina Panthers. He did not get along well, consistently missing meetings and clashing with the coaching staff and fellow players. No team signed him after that and he eventually turned to being an MMA fighter to try and capitalize on his athletic nature. His career lasted from 2018 through 2022, when after losing three straight matches was released from the UFC. Jones signed with Dallas in 2008, after being suspended by the league for 2007 after two seasons in Tennessee. He played just nine games before being suspended, as he was involved in a fight with the bodyguard Dallas assigned to babysit the player. After sitting out 2009, he rejuvenated his career in Cincinnati, playing eight seasons for the Bengals, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2015 and a Pro Bowl the following year. Jones, 41, was booked just before 2 a.m. Saturday into Kenton County jail, according to the court log. He was arrested by the Covington Police Department and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, disorderly conduct, and assault of a police officer or a probation officer. Jones posted a $10,000 bond and was released around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Other details regarding the arrest were not immediately made available. Saturday's arrest in Covington, which is directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, marks at least the fourth time since 2021 that Jones has been arrested. He has now been booked on a public intoxication charge three years in a row. Joseph, part of the Cowboys' 2021 class that brought them Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa, was traded away before 2023. he had been arrested for his participation in a fight outside a bar that led to a murder. He was drafted following being removed from the LSU team and having to transfer to Kentucky a year before entering the draft.
