Tobias Forge says most Ghost songs aren't about the Devil

Tobias Forge claims that, despite appearances, a lot of Ghost's music isn't actually about the Devil.
Since debuting with 2010's Opus Eponymous, the Swedish hard rock/heavy metal outfit have presented themselves as a subversive church with a skeletal 'pope' singer, portrayed by Forge, and an ensemble of druid-like backing musicians called 'nameless ghouls'. Their back-catalogue also includes such songs as Devil Church, Depth Of Satan's Eyes and the new single Satanized.
However, Forge says in a new interview with Metal Hammer that that seeming fascination with The Great Horned One is only skin-deep. 'With most of the things I've written, including parts of the first record, there's this misconception that they're about the Devil, and they aren't really,' he insists.
So what do Ghost's songs actually discuss? 'They've always been about mankind's relationship with the concept of life and death,' Forge continues, 'and God and divine presence or absence. Some songs are expressed with more specificity at a certain individual or a certain aspect of society. I just felt that I wanted this new record to be… about being human. Being alive.'
Elsewhere in the interview, Forge talks about Ghost's 'new' frontman Papa V Perpetua, who replaces the outgoing character Papa Emeritus IV (even though it's still the same man beneath the mask and mitre). He admits that he doesn't know much about the new singer's personality yet and that it will reveal itself once he starts playing live.
'I've always felt that it was a scary thing,' he adds. 'On one hand, I'm trying to make the 'product' that is Ghost an entertaining thing for our fans. On the other, I try to do that as pleasantly as is possible for myself as well.
'When I decided to introduce Cardinal Copia into the mix [for 2018 album Prequelle], it felt very uncomfortable because he was going to be thrown out there as someone who hadn't become [a Papa Emeritus] yet: 'Wow, this is going to be a little different.' But what I did know was that I didn't have to go through the process of introducing a new character for the next album. Now, I do!'
Ghost release their new album, Skeletá, on April 25 via Loma Vista. The band will start the six-month Skeletour world tour to promote the release in Manchester, UK, on April 15. See dates and details of the shows below.

Jonas Renske hopes Katatonia's new era includes more input from his bandmates
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Revered Swedish prog metal gloom mongers Katatonia sent shockwaves through their fanbase in March when it was announced that founding guitarist Anders Nyström had left the band after 34 years and 12 albums. That hasn't stopped co-founding vocalist Jonas Renkse in his tracks, though, and he ushers in a new era of the band with 13th LP Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State. It features a new-look line-up with two new guitar players – Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland – and Renkse is now eyeing new heights. 'When I listen to the album, I hear a band that's still very hungry and wants to do new things and go to new places,' he says. 'There's a drive, a new energy and new ideas.' He'd previously said Nyström's departure was 'a decision not taken lightly,' but that it allowed 'everyone to thrive and move forward with their own creative preferences.' Things threatened to get ugly when the guitarist retaliated by saying:'Katatonia could and should have been mutually laid to rest,' believing Renkse and co should operate under a new name. He also criticised the band's recent setlists for ignoring their earlier material. Renkse confirms to Prog that he's mourning the end of their 'fruitful' partnership – but believes the band's legacy in in safe hands. 'Some relationships go on for a long time, and you maybe don't realise that you've grown apart,' he reflects. 'I'm happy we got to live this dream together. What we have created together cannot be taken away from us.' The new record itself, it sees Renske accompanied by bassist Niklas Sandin, drummer Daniel Moilanen, and the 'overwhelming' talents of Elgstrand (Entombed AD) and Svalland (Letters From The Colony). Elgstrand is no stranger to the band, having deputised for live shows in recent years, while Svalland was 'the guy that I had my eye on' when the search for a new member began. This album is a little bit more guitar-based … I was thinking more as a guitar player than anything else While 2023's Sky Void Of Stars found Katatonia sounding uncharacteristically upbeat, Nightmares returns to a darker sonic world. 'It's something I reacted to,' Renkse says. 'Perhaps subconsciously because of the last album, but when I got the masters back, I thought, 'Wow, this record is really dark!' 'I think, for some reason, this album is a little bit more guitar-based. I was picking up the guitar more often than keyboards, and I was thinking more as a guitar player than anything else.' Listeners can expect plenty of guitar solos too. Nightmares is the third consecutive Katatonia album Renkse has written on his own. He says the new record – which explores 'the nightmares we face in life' – is not very different from its predecessors; but he's afforded himself experimentation with Efter Solen, a fully electronic song sung in Swedish. 'I'm always writing, and it had a very nice vibe to it. I didn't really want to waste it by just keeping it on a hard drive,' he explains. 'I'm very happy to have it as an experiment; it's still very melancholic and dark; it just has a different kind of clothing.' He hopes future albums will see the band sharing the weight of songwriting duties. 'I always encourage it – but in the last 10 years, no one has really stepped up to the plate. Being the sole songwriter is sometimes very lonely; I would love the bouncing back and forth of ideas.'

Matt Damon box office bomb with only 47% on RT becomes Netflix smash hit
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Despite his string of hit roles in everything from Good Will Hunting and The Bourne Identity to, most recently, Oppenheimer, not everything Matt Damon stars in is as successful. However, one of his biggest bombs is finding a new life after becoming a smash hit on Netflix. Released in 2017, Downsizing wasn't well received. It has just 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office bomb after its $55 million earnings failed to match its budget. However,in the UK, it was added to Netflix on Thursday, May 22, and it's been steadily climbing Netflix's rankings and gaining viewers. At the time of writing two weeks later, it's the streamer's most-watched movie. Living in the US? Downsizing is free via Hoopla and Kanopy but is only available to buy or rent digitally beyond those options. Downsizing is part romance, part comedy and part sci-fi story. It's set in a world in which humans invent 'downsizing', a process by which people are irreversibly shrunk to about five inches, which makes them more space efficient thereby solving overpopulation and the climate crisis. Damon plays Paul, who decides to go through the process with his wife Aubrey (Kristin Wiig)... until she pulls out at the last minute and leaves him. Stuck in his small form, and seeing his life fall apart, Paul goes on a voyage through the small 'Leisureland' in order to find himself and redefine his life. Critics of 2017 criticized Downsizing for being a bit muddled in its focus, though it's worth pointing out that certain reviewers really loved it. As someone who watched the movie in cinemas back then, it's safe to say that the movie was mis-marketed in a way that hurt it: posters and adverts made it look like a standard American comedy, but it's anything but. In a way, Downsizing is an exploration of the climate crisis and humanity's longevity, dealing with themes of class struggles and impending extinction events. It can get dark and melancholy at times, which isn't what audiences would really expect from a Matt Damon rom-com. That's likely why Downsizing was received so poorly eight years ago. It's not a bad film, but if you're expecting a lighthearted comedy, you're going to be disappointed. The movie was directed by Alexander Payne, also known for The Descendants and The Holdovers, and if you've seen those fantastic movies, you'll have your expectations better aligned for Downsizing. Downsizing climbing up Netflix's rankings makes sense: people have probably forgotten any expectations created by marketing 8 years ago, the streamer's thumbnails make it seem more of a sci-fi story than a comedy, and its genre tags are "cerebral" and "imaginative" which better fits the movie. The movie isn't actually the only pre-Covid Hollywood flop on the top-10 movies list and if you want something more action-packed, the Taron Edgerton and Jamie Foxx Robin Hood from 2018 is at #4 after being added on Sunday, June 1. Rounding out the list is Netflix Original A Widow's Game at #2, Channel 4 doc Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax at #3, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning at #5, stalwart The Super Mario Bros. Movie at #6, another Netflix movie The Heart Knows at #7, The Cat in the Hat at #8, Netflix doc A Deadly American Marriage at #9 and yet another kids movie Minions at #10.

Royal Baby Debut! Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia Bring Baby Ines to Her First Official Event
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden officially introduced their baby daughter Princess Ines to the public on Sweden's National Day The royal couple welcomed their fourth child and first daughter on Feb. 7 Baby Princess Ines made her balcony debut for her grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf's birthday in April, but National Day marked her first official eventPrince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden introduced their baby daughter Princess Ines to the world on a meaningful day. On June 6, Sweden's National Day, the royal couple brought their infant daughter along to open the Royal Palace in Stockholm for special visiting hours. Prince Carl Philip, 46, and Princess Sofia, 40, welcomed their fourth child (and first daughter!) on Feb. 7, and named her Ines Marie Lillian Silvia. The infant princess made her public debut on the Royal Palace balcony for King Carl XVI Gustaf's April 30 birthday and attended her first event with her parents on National Day. Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia were all smiles as they stepped out at the Royal Palace with their baby daughter, who turns 4 months old tomorrow. There, the mom and daughter matched in the traditional Sverigedräkten (national dress) in blue and yellow hues, reflecting the national flag, as Sofia and Carl Philip welcomed people to the palace. The couple opened the palace's southern gates at 10 a.m., local time, to welcome the public to the inner courtyard, where Prince Carl Philip gave a brief speech. "Ladies and gentlemen, a warm welcome to the Royal Palace. How nice that so many of you have come here today!" he said in part. "Being able to gather here on Sweden's National Day means a lot to my family and me. The royal palaces are an important part of our cultural heritage. Therefore, it is a pleasure to welcome you into these unique environments filled with history, art and stories." Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia also gave a fun peek behind the scenes in a video shared to Instagram. The clip opened with a selfie-style shot of the couple smiling inside the palace, and rolled to show them meeting paramedics and greeting the public with Princess Ines in tow. Carl Philip is the second child and only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, and will celebrate ten years of marriage with his wife, Sofia, next week on June 13. The couple tied the knot almost a decade ago and went on to welcome sons Prince Alexander, 9, Prince Gabriel, 7 and Prince Julian, 4. At the start of the year, their family expanded when Princess Ines was born, and the couple gave her middle names to honor her grandmothers. Sofia's mother is named Marie, while Carl Philip's mom is Queen Silvia. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more!
