Spain floods: Two people missing as torrential rainfall strike Spain; warnings issued in 25 provinces
Extreme weather conditions continue to rock Europe as severe floods and thunderstorms have struck popular holiday destinations in Spain, while Britain experiences another heatwave over the weekend.
Two people were missing on Saturday after torrential rain and floods hit Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, reports DW.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged people to practice 'great caution' and 'avoid travelling' amid the intense downpour.
'Very attentive to the situation in several communities with warnings for heavy rain and storms. Personnel from @/UMEgob are already collaborating in municipalities of the Riberta Alta del Ebro.
Follow civil protection instructions and avoid travel. Take great caution,' his post on X read.
Spain was hit with severe storms and hail alerts after 100mm of rain fell in just one hour at a popular tourist spot. Locals and visitors faced disruption as the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued weather warnings across 25 provinces, including eight under the more serious orange alert, as reported by The Sun.
AEMET placed Huesca, Teruel, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Girona, Lleida, Tarragona, Castellón under orange alerts for intense storms.

The Ebro riverbank in Tarazona of Zaragoza province was hit with nearly 100mm of rainfall in just an hour on Friday and was subsequently put on red alert.
The agency warned that up to 50 litres of rain per square metre could fall across much of Aragon and Catalonia, potentially triggering local flooding and causing ravines to overflow.
No casualties have been reported as of yet but local rescue teams have been notified of 30 flood-related incidents with blocked roads and vehicles being swept away.
On Saturday, Renfe, Spain's rail company, temporarily halted operations across Catalonia on Saturday, reported DW.
In October last year, flash floods claimed the lives of over 205 people in the Valencia region of Spain. The rain storm, similar to the one currently ongoing in the country, is caused by a weather phenomenon known as DANA in Spanish or 'cold drop' (Isolated Depression at High Levels), where a mass of cold air descends over the warmer Mediterranean waters.

RoRo ferries on Chorao-Ribandar route reduce travel time from 15min to 5 mins
Panaji: Two RoRo (roll on/roll off) ferries, Gangotri and Dwarka, were launched on the Chorao–Ribandar route on Monday. The ferries will operate on a PPP basis, said chief minister Pramod Sawant during the launch. 'These vessels will cut travel time from 15 minutes to just five minutes,' he said. 'With air-conditioned facilities for pedestrians, zero-emission features, and their capacity to carry an additional 15-16 vehicles compared to regular ferries, most of the commuters waiting to travel will be accommodated aboard the vessel. Ambulances that used to have additional waiting time due to the limitations of the regular ferries will no longer have to suffer,' he said. Sawant added that more RoRo services will be introduced on other river routes to strengthen waterway transport and promote tourism. 'This RoRo is an epitome of Make in India and Made in Goa. We plan to replicate this successful project across the state,' Sawant added. Sharing his thoughts on the decision to no tify fares for commuters travelling on this route, Sawant said, 'The ferry services operate on a 100% basis because the rides are free for pedestrians. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo When we give the public an upgrade in its facilities, they must contribute by paying the fare. We also have a concessional pass system for those who find the daily fares exorbitant,' Sawant said. The launch was also attended by MP Shripad Naik and the minister for river navigation, Subhash Phal Dessai. Naik said that Gangotri and Dwarka are not 'outsider' names. 'Both names are inspired by Indian culture, there is no insider and outsider about this. Someone who makes an issue about it cannot be considered Indian,' he said. He was reacting to GPCC president Amit Patkar's claim that these names are non-Indian. Phal Desai said that it was his decision to name them and also said that these are two pure names that are associated with water bodies, which is why they have been named so. 'One need not politicise something like this,' he said.

Australia to Germany, UK to US: How much student visas cost in 2025 and what's getting pricier?
Student visa costs across popular destinations have been under intense scrutiny lately, and for good reason. Many aspirants planning to study abroad start budgeting years in advance, but recent surges in visa fees have added a whole new challenge, especially for Indian students. Australia, for instance, now charges a steep student visa application cost of AUD 2,000. This jump is just one part of a broader global trend, with fees rising across the board for international students. What once seemed like a minor cost is now a major consideration, right up there with tuition and living expenses. Whether it's Germany's €12,000 blocked account or the UK's £524 fee, visa costs are varying widely, forcing students to reconsider how much they're willing to invest in their academic journey abroad. Here is a look at what it will cost students to apply for a visa to popular study abroad destinations. Australia - Approx. 1,12,862 INR Australia's new student visa fee structure has set tongues wagging with its AUD 2,000 baseline cost. The increase affects most applicants, though students from Pacific Island nations and Timor-Leste enjoy reduced rates. The government's Visa Pricing Estimator helps calculate exact costs, but students should brace themselves for additional expenses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Getting 87¢ Generic Viagra This Month Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo The mandatory Overseas Student Health Cover sits on top of the base fee, pushing total costs even higher. UK (United Kingdom) - Approx. 60,733 INR British universities continue to attract Indian students despite the £524 visa fee that applies universally – whether you're applying from Mumbai or Manchester. This flat rate covers the primary applicant, with dependents facing the same charge. The healthcare surcharge adds another layer of expense, calculated based on course duration during the application process. Students can expect to wait between three and eight weeks for processing, depending on their location. Canada - Approx. 48,884 INR Canadian study permits represent excellent value at CAD 150 for new applications or extensions. Students requiring status restoration face a combined CAD 389.75 bill – CAD 239.75 for restoration plus the standard CAD 150 permit fee. This pricing structure keeps Canada competitive in the international education market, particularly when compared to its higher-priced neighbours. New Zealand - Approx. 43,742 INR New Zealand's Fee Paying Student Visa costs NZD 850 but covers study periods up to four years. The visa permits full-time study and part-time work (maximum 20 hours weekly), with full-time work rights during holidays subject to conditions. From 18th August 2025, applications shift to New Zealand's enhanced Immigration Online system. Ireland - Approx. 16,084 INR Ireland's visa fees remain unchanged with €60 for single-entry applications and €100 for multiple-entry permissions. Certain applicants – including family members of Irish citizens and specific nationalities – escape fees altogether. Local embassy and visa centre procedures may introduce additional administrative charges, varying by location. US (United States) - Approx. 15,914 INR America's F and M visa categories maintain their $185 processing fee, making the US one of the more affordable options for Indian students. Academic (F) and vocational (M) programmes fall under this non-petition-based category, with no additional mandatory surcharges. Exchange programme participants under J visas may dodge fees entirely if their programme enjoys official US government sponsorship. However, all fees remain non-refundable regardless of application outcome. Sweden - Approx. 13,432 INR Swedish residence permits for students cost SEK 1,500 for adults, with under-18s paying half at SEK 750. The non-refundable fee has exemptions for scholarship holders from the Swedish Institute, Sida, EU, or Uppsala University's ISP programme. Students must prove full-time admission and arrange health insurance for stays under one year. Germany - Approx. 7,540 INR Germany's modest €75 visa fee might seem attractive, but the devil lurks in the details. Students must demonstrate financial capacity through a blocked account containing €11,904 – enough to cover an entire year's expenses. New rules from September 2024 restrict monthly withdrawals to €992, adding another layer of complexity. Factor in APS certification, extensive documentation, and German-standard health insurance, and costs escalate quickly. France - Approx. 5,026 INR Indian students applying through France's Études en France system benefit from a €50 visa fee – half the €99 charged to non-EEF applicants. The long-stay student visa doubles as a residence permit for courses exceeding six months. French authorities encourage digital document submission to expedite processing at external service centres. Singapore - Approx. 4,027 INR Singapore's Student's Pass carries a S$60 issuance fee, with an optional S$30 Multiple Journey Visa if required. The entirely digital pass system grants access through Singpass or FileSG following biometric enrolment. Students receive an In-Principle Approval letter that serves as their entry visa when needed. UAE: Low-cost airline Wizz Air to officially exit Abu Dhabi operations by September 1, ending 5 year gulf expansion
Passengers with bookings beyond August 31 will be offered refunds or alternative travel options as Wizz Air ends its Abu Dhabi operations due to operational and market challenges/ Image: (File) TL;DR Wizz Air Abu Dhabi ends all operations from September 1, 2025. Joint venture with ADQ officially dissolved. Passengers booked after August 31 will get refunds or alternatives. Wizz Air shifts focus to European core markets . Wizz Air, the Hungary-based low-cost airline, has announced it will suspend all operations under its Abu Dhabi-based subsidiary, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi , by September 1, 2025. The decision marks the end of a five-year push to establish a low-cost aviation hub in the Gulf region and brings its partnership with the Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company ( ADQ ) to a close. The move will result in the cessation of all Wizz Air flights operating from Zayed International Airport (AUH) after August 31, 2025, effectively eliminating Wizz Air's operational presence in the Gulf. The airline confirmed that passengers with bookings beyond August 31 will be contacted and offered refunds or alternative travel arrangements. Customers who purchased tickets through travel agents or third-party platforms have been advised to coordinate directly with their point of purchase. Wizz Air's joint venture with ADQ, launched in 2020, was designed to support Abu Dhabi's broader aviation diversification goals, and the carrier had originally planned to expand to a fleet of 100 aircraft in the region over a 15-year period. However, a combination of economic and operational headwinds forced a strategic rethink. Strategic Withdrawal Driven by Geopolitical, Regulatory, and Operational Challenges The company cited several critical challenges behind its decision to exit the market: Geopolitical instability in the region. Persistent supply chain disruptions, which have particularly affected the aviation sector. Airspace closures that have impacted flight routing. Limited market access and regional regulatory constraints that hindered growth. Ongoing engine performance issues, particularly with Pratt & Whitney engines in hot climates, which have caused dozens of aircraft groundings across Wizz Air's all-Airbus SE fleet. In fact, CEO József Váradi had previously stated that the airline would reduce operations in 'hot and harsh environments,' as these conditions cause accelerated engine wear. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo These same maintenance challenges were among the key reasons the airline chose to pull back from Abu Dhabi. 'The operating environment has changed significantly. Supply chain constraints, geopolitical instability, and limited market access have made it increasingly difficult to sustain our original ambitions,' said József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air. He added: 'While this was a difficult decision, it is the right one given the current market dynamics. It will help Wizz Air focus on its core markets and initiatives that improve the airline's customer proposition and build shareholder value.' Impact on Passengers and the Broader Market Wizz Air assured its customers that bookings made for travel after August 31 will be addressed either through refunds or alternative travel solutions. The company emphasized that the suspension affects only flights operated by Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, and that other operations across the broader Wizz Air group, such as Wizz Air Malta and Wizz Air UK, will continue as normal. The exit from the Abu Dhabi market also signifies the end of Wizz Air's ambitions to use the UAE capital as a gateway to destinations in Asia, Africa, and Central Europe. Since its establishment in late 2020, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi faced significant obstacles that limited route expansion and stifled plans for broader connectivity. Despite the airline's original plan to scale rapidly, constraints on market access, regional red tape, and limited airspace availability made scaling up nearly impossible. With these compounded issues, the operation remained limited to a small number of destinations, far short of its original vision. Refocus on Europe Amid Operational Realignment Following the wind-down in the Gulf, Wizz Air will intensify its strategic focus on its core markets in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as on selected Western European countries including Austria, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The airline sees these regions as offering greater long-term potential for sustainable growth and profitability. 'This strategic realignment to core markets will enable the Company to redeploy resources to regions with greater long-term potential for sustainable growth and profitability,' the airline said in its official statement. Wizz Air currently operates a fleet of 237 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft and served 63.4 million passengers in fiscal year 2025. The company expects this realignment to optimize its resources and enhance shareholder returns, while reinforcing its footprint in the European market, where it sees stronger demand and fewer regulatory complications. In closing, CEO Váradi acknowledged the contributions of the airline's Gulf-based employees and partners, stating: 'We are grateful to our employees in the UAE and partners in Abu Dhabi for their commitment to building the Wizz Air brand in the region.' FAQs: Q. When will Wizz Air Abu Dhabi stop flying? All flights will end after August 31, 2025. Q. What happens to my ticket after that date? You'll receive a refund or alternative travel option. Q. Why is Wizz Air leaving Abu Dhabi? Due to engine issues, regulatory limits, and geopolitical factors. Q. Does this affect other Wizz Air flights? No, it only impacts Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operations. Q. What if I booked through a travel agent or third-party app? You should contact them directly to manage your booking.
