Madinet Masr Launches Buyut Al-Khalifa to Revive Historic Cairo

In partnership with the Built Environment Collective (BEC) and the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the project will restore heritage homes in the heart of Old Cairo.

On Al-Rukbiyya Street in Historic Cairo, an ambitious new project is setting the stage for a cultural revival. Madinet Masr, one of Egypt's most prominent urban developers, has announced the launch of 'Buyut Al-Khalifa'—a large-scale heritage conservation effort in collaboration with the Built Environment Collective (BEC) and the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Slated to begin in May 2025, the project is a reclaiming of a living history. Spanning 3,000 square meters in a UNESCO World Heritage site, the initiative includes the restoration of two heritage buildings, the renovation of 19 residential facades, and the transformation of public spaces with eco-conscious designs, greenery, and lighting. Madinet Masr's initiative extends beyond preservation. With urban farms irrigated using recycled groundwater from local monument projects and a commitment to promoting heritage crafts, the project fuses culture, sustainability, and community development. 'This isn't just about bricks and mortar—it's about people,' Dr. May Al-Ibrashy, chair of BEC, tells CairoScene. 'We're protecting the past while building futures.' Part of BEC's long-running 'Athar Lina' program, the project also connects with broader state-led urban development schemes, including the Citadel Square plan and the 'Descendants of the Prophet' heritage trail. In a time when cities worldwide are struggling with identity in the face of development, Buyut Al-Khalifa offers a new model: one where history and modernity collaborate rather than co-exist.

Investment opportunities in sectors of tourism, antiquities reviewed

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said that the Egyptian government is actively formulating clear plans with specific targets aimed at promoting investment opportunities across various sectors. One of the most important of these sectors is tourism, where close monitoring is being undertaken by the ministries of tourism and investment. This came during a meeting held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the New Administrative Capital to review investment opportunities in the tourism and antiquities sectors in presence of Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan al-Khatib and senior officials from both ministries. Fathy explained that a specialized unit is being formed to manage investment opportunities, with the goal of establishing an 'investment opportunities bank' for the sector. This would help achieve strategic goals by presenting available projects and opportunities. The minister reviewed the investment map for tourism and antiquities, highlighting a target to attract 30 million tourists by 2031. This goal depends largely on the growth of Egypt's hotel capacity. In 2024, Egypt added 7,200 new hotel rooms (55% of which were new builds). In 2025, around 19,000 additional rooms are expected through new projects, expansions and national initiatives, he said. Planned investments include tourist restaurants, cafes and preservation/restoration of antiquities. Over the past 5 years, the Supreme Council of Antiquities has implemented an average of 36 projects per year, he added. The minister also reviewed planned investments across governorates between 2025–2031, covering hotels, restaurants, safari camps, amusement parks and the rehabilitation and operation of archaeological sites and museums in partnership with the private sector. Khatib said that this meeting marks the third consecutive sectoral review within Egypt's unified national investment strategy, which aims to increase FDI across all sectors. Tourism and antiquities are high-priority sectors due to Egypt's ambitious targets for tourist inflow. He said that opportunities in these sectors will be featured on the national investment map, accompanied by all necessary data for investors. The strategy is based on a comprehensive sectoral diagnosis, identification of priorities, reform and legislative recommendations, and development of a complete, executable investment roadmap.

Almost 2 million visit ‘On Top of the Pyramid' Exhibition in Shanghai

Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sharif Fathi, received Liu Duo, the Deputy Mayor of Shanghai Municipality in the People's Republic of China, and her accompanying delegation at the ministry's headquarters in the government district of the New Administrative Capital. The meeting took place during their current visit to Egypt and was attended by Moamen Othman, Head of the Museums Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Chu Xiaobo, Director of the Shanghai Museum, and a number of ministry leaders and representatives from Shanghai Municipality and the Shanghai Museum. Duo reviewed the results of the 'On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt' exhibition currently held at the Shanghai National Museum, highlighting its success and the large turnout of visitors, which prompted the museum to extend the exhibition's operating hours into the evening. She pointed out that the exhibition has received more than 1.9 million visitors since its opening in July 2024, with attendees coming not only from Shanghai but also from various neighboring Chinese cities. She added her expectation that the number of visitors to the exhibition will reach 2.5 million by the end of its run next August, expressing her hope for broader horizons of cooperation between the two countries in the coming period. The minister then reviewed the volume of tourist traffic arriving in Egypt from China, expressing his aspiration to further promote this traffic from this important market by strengthening joint cooperation mechanisms and opening broader horizons in the fields of tourism and antiquities through several avenues, including adopting the idea of establishing temporary antiquities exhibitions and increasing the number of joint promotional campaigns. The two sides also discussed the possibility of cooperation in the fields of museums, training, archaeological excavations, scientific research, and the exchange of expertise. The Chinese side expressed its hope to increase the number of archaeological missions working in Egypt. Recently, a new joint archaeological mission between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Shanghai Museum began work at the Sekhmet Temple in the Mit Rahina archaeological area, as did the joint mission of Peking University with the Supreme Council of Antiquities, which will work at the Tell el-Aziz site in Mit Rahina. This is in addition to the existing archaeological missions, including the missions at the Montu Temple in Karnak and the Shanghai University of Science and Technology working in Saqqara on the digital documentation project of coffins.
