Coconut oil on the boil: Price hikes pinch users
MUMBAI: The humble coconut oil-a must-have product in almost every Indian household-may be the reason your grocery bills pinched you a bit more. Companies like
Marico
and
Dabur
collectively took close to 40% price hikes in coconut oil over the past 12 months due to high inflation in the category.
Prices of commodities have more or less 'peaked', and any major price increases are unlikely to be passed on to consumers unless there's a 'black swan event', said Saugata Gupta, MD & CEO at Marico, who is betting on better volume growth for the FMCG sector this financial year. For Marico, which makes Parachute coconut oil, copra (from which coconut oil is derived) makes up a large share of its commodity basket. Copra prices soared by 40%-50% over the past year, pushing Marico to take nearly 30% price increases over the past 12 months, Gupta told TOI. Marico leads the coconut oil market with more than a 50% share, according to market estimates. Firms with a bigger play, like Marico, use copra to derive coconut oil, while some buy the oil directly from the market.
Dabur took around a 10% price hike in the category in the past three to six months, stockist sources said. "We mitigated the impact of inflation through a mix of value engineering, cost-saving initiatives, and judicious price increases, keeping the competitive intensity in mind," said Ankush Jain, CFO at Dabur India.
Coconut oil is on the boil globally, with prices hitting a record high. Earlier this month, the benchmark wholesale price for Filipino coconut oil delivered in Rotterdam rose above $2,700 a metric ton, about 200% higher than the 2000-2020 average, Bloomberg reported. Bad weather hit coconut production in Southeast Asia.
The local
consumer goods industry
is contending with high input cost inflation in a few other commodities, such as cocoa and edible oils, as well. Crude, though, has been soft, giving some relief to firms. FMCG companies have also been struggling with a demand slowdown led by weak urban consumption, which firms hope will see revival going ahead, helped by easing food inflation.
The biggest player, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), expects the first half of FY26 to be better than the second half of FY25. Marico's Gupta said that the industry will see better volume growth this FY. "Urban demand didn't deteriorate further. It's subdued but not stressful," Gupta said, adding that companies will have to continue premiumising to sustain growth even in a sluggish environment. "The extra disposable income that consumers will get through the tax breaks will be spent on upgrading and discretionary, not necessarily only staples," said Gupta.

Pune: MSRDC wants to transform Pune-Mumbai Expressway into a 10-lane "superhighway" to tide over traffic snarls and cater to the future demands of vehicular movement along the corridor, one of the busiest in the country. "This is an upgrade from our earlier proposal to make the expressway an eight-lane facility. The latest upgrade will cost around Rs1,420 crore. The DPR is being finalised and will be submitted to govt for approval," Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) vice-chairman and managing director Anilkumar Gaikwad told TOI on Friday. Inaugurated in 2002, the expressway is a 94.6-km stretch connecting the bustling metropolis of Mumbai to Pune, Maharashtra's industrial and educational hub. It currently carries an estimated 65,000 vehicles daily during weekdays. The number increases to over 100,000 during weekends. With traffic volume increasing by approximately 5-6% on a year-on-year basis, the MSRDC's proposed expansion is seen as a long-term solution to the congestion. The latest project involves widening of the current infrastructure. The financing model — whether Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) or annuity — is yet to be decided. The current toll collection for the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is valid till 2045. MSRDC would seek an extension if the expressway widening gets approval to make the project self-sustaining. At present, the journey between Mumbai and Pune takes about two hours under normal conditions. However, weekend rush hours and holiday traffic can stretch that drive by an additional hour. According to MSRDC, the proposed expansion could virtually eliminate this extended travel time, offering smoother rides even during peak periods. If approved and executed as envisioned, the expansion could become one of India's most ambitious road infrastructure upgrades — a critical step toward matching the country's rapid growth in vehicle ownership with high-capacity transit corridors, an MSRDC official said. MLA Mahesh Landge has in a social media post recently said the expansion would ensure necessary respite from traffic congestion on the e-way. "This is a long-awaited demand. The expansion is needed considering the heavy traffic along the e-way," he told TOI. People frequently travelling on the e-way are of the view that the state govt should not delay in the expansion work and carry out the project in phases to ensure that there was no traffic congestion. "Frequent traffic snarls are becoming an impediment for travellers. The expansion proposal should be immediately cleared and work should commence," said Manisha Khandekar, a frequent traveller. The expressway — which begins at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai and ends at Kiwale near Pune — is India's first access-controlled express highway. While work on the 13-km "missing link" project is on, which will facilitate 10 lanes in the Khandala Ghat section, the proposed expansion would cover the remaining 67km of the route. According to MSRDC, land acquisition challenges were expected to be minimal. "MSRDC already holds land adjacent to most parts of the existing expressway. Only limited additional land near tunnels will be needed. These land parcels are near the tunnel zones," said an official involved with the project. Nilekani commits second multi-year grant to AI4Bharat
Bengaluru: Infosys cofounder and chairman Nandan Nilekani committed a second multi-year grant to AI4Bharat—an open-source initiative at IIT Madras that is building foundational AI models for Indian languages. Its work spans speech recognition, machine translation, text-to-speech, and language understanding for all major Indian languages. In 2020, Nilekani saw the transformative potential of AI in Indian languages. Nilekani-founded EkStep Foundation and AI4Bharat began investing in language digitisation, data infrastructure, and early models tailored to Indian linguistic diversity. Applications were built within weeks of ChatGPT's release, ranging from chatbots in regional languages to integrations in governance and education. AI4Bharat's models became the underlying infrastructure for this deployment. AI4Bharat has become the language backbone of India's AI stack. Its open-source speech, translation, and text-to-speech models now power key public digital platforms.
