Sri Lanka looks to attract Saudi travelers to diversify tourist influx

Arab News29-04-2025

COLOMBO: Saudi Arabia is one of Sri Lanka's priority markets for tourism, authorities have told Arab News, as the island nation seeks to attract more visitors from the Kingdom to diversify its tourist base.
Tourism has been on the mend in Sri Lanka as the island nation recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its worst economic crisis in decades.
In 2024, the sector that is traditionally one of key sources of foreign reserves welcomed more than 2 million tourists and earned about $3 billion.
To further boost its hospitality sector, Sri Lankan officials are planning to lessen its reliance on conventional tourist markets and target new visitors, especially those from Saudi Arabia.
'Recognizing the immense potential of the Saudi market, Sri Lanka has positioned Saudi Arabia as a key priority in its tourism promotion efforts,' Madusha Perera, assistant director for marketing at the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, told Arab News recently.
'The country aims to tap into the growing outbound travel market in Saudi Arabia, which has shown an increasing interest in international destinations. By focusing on this market, Sri Lanka seeks to diversify its tourist base and reduce its dependency on traditional source markets.'
In October, the Sri Lankan government began issuing free tourist visas to visitors from 35 countries, including Saudi Arabia.
Last week, the SLTPB and Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh hosted a special roadshow in the Saudi capital and Dammam to showcase its tourism offerings and forge new partnerships with key players in the Kingdom's travel industry.
To attract more Saudi tourists, Sri Lankan officials have prepared special packages that cater to the market.
'Sri Lanka offers a culturally rich experience that resonates with Saudi tourists,' Perera said. 'The country is enhancing its offerings by including halal-friendly services and Arabic-language resources.
'These initiatives are designed to provide a comfortable and familiar environment for visitors from Saudi Arabia.'
These recent efforts built upon Sri Lanka's historical ties with Saudi Arabia, which has been rooted in people-to-people relations, said Sri Lanka Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ameer Ajwad.
The roadshows last week were held after a years-long hiatus, he added.
'The events were immensely productive and helped to forge business collaborations in the tourism industry,' he told Arab News.
With its famous palm-fringed white beaches, seaside resorts offering water sports, and UNESCO cultural sites, Sri Lanka is a destination that fits well with the preferences of Saudi tourists.
'Sri Lanka offers a wide array of facilities from luxury family getaways and wellness retreats to wildlife safaris, cultural experiences, natural beauty, family-friendly activities and halal-friendly travel which are mostly preferred by Saudi tourists,' Ajwad said.
'We shall continue to organize roadshows in all major cities of Saudi Arabia to strengthen ties with Saudi Arabia's outbound travel partners and other tourism promotional activities,' said Ajwad.
The aim is to position the island nation as a 'premier, year-round destination for (the) Saudi family, luxury, and experiential tourism.'

Over 1.5 million pilgrims converge on Mina as Hajj begins officially

Saudi Gazette report MINA — Chanting 'Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik...' ('Here I am, O God, here I am answering your call...'), more than 1.5 million pilgrims converged on Mina on Wednesday, the Day of Tarwiyah, marking the official beginning of the annual pilgrimage of Hajj. The ascent of pilgrims on the tent city was completed smoothly by Wednesday afternoon in accordance with a foolproof and flawless organizational and operational plan mapped out by the Saudi authorities. More than 1.47 million pilgrims from all around the world were joined by hundreds of thousands of domestic pilgrims in performing Hajj this year. These include 2443 pilgrims, who came from 100 countries, to perform Hajj as guests of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman. Those pilgrims who arrived in Makkah on Tuesday performed Tawaf Al-Qudum (Tawaf of Arrival), one of the obligatory rituals of Hajj, before heading for the vast sprawling tent city of Mina. The chanting of talbiyah reverberated the entire valley of Mina and roads and streets leading to the tent city as pilgrims streamed to the valley, praising and glorifying God, in an atmosphere of spirituality and faith. In a serene spiritual atmosphere, amidst well-organized security and integrated services, and meticulous implementation of field plans, pilgrims descended on Mina. More than 8,000 buses transported pilgrims to their camps from their accommodation in Makkah. Retracing the noble tradition of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the pilgrims will spend throughout the day and night on the Tarwiyah Day, in Mina. The 5-6 day Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. On the first day of Hajj rituals, they are engaged in supplications and make final preparations for the Standing (wuqoof) at Arafat, the most important pillar of Hajj, marking the pinnacle of the annual pilgrimage, on Thursday. They immerse in supplications to God for their forgiveness and salvation. Pilgrims began arriving in Mina in the early hours of Wednesday. As the night wore on Tuesday, all roads and highways leading into the vast plains of Mina, located seven km northeast of the Grand Mosque, were filled with pilgrims, who made their way by vehicles or by foot to the world's largest tent city where they will camp overnight. The Saudi authorities and Hajj missions of various countries have completed elaborate preparations and foolproof arrangements that enabled the pilgrims to complete their smooth movement to the tent city of Mina. The pilgrims' movement has taken place smoothly, thanks to the vast arrangements made by the authorities. Saudi authorities have mobilized all their human and material resources to make the pilgrimage hassle-free and a great success. Artificial intelligence technology helped process the deluge of data, including video from a new fleet of drones, to better manage the massive crowds. Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti, Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars and Head of the General Presidency for Scientific Research and Ifta Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, received those seeking religious fatwas at his residence in Mina on Wednesday. He directed the assignment of five eminent scholars to respond to the pilgrims' inquiries during the Hajj season. Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of the Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, urged pilgrims to frequently recite the Talbiyah from the time they enter in the state of ihram for Hajj until they begin stoning at Jamarat Al-Aqaba on the Day of Sacrifice, Dhul Hijjah 10. Sheikh Al-Sudais said that it is recommended to pray on time, shortening them without combining them, except for Maghrib and Fajr which should not be shortened. This year's Hajj takes place in sweltering temperatures that test the endurance of worshipers during the mostly outdoor rituals. Many pilgrims are seen carrying white umbrellas to protect themselves from the scorching sun. The Ministry of Health has issued a heat advisory for pilgrims in the wake of scorching surface temperatures, which pose a significant health risk. Following last year's lethal heat wave, authorities have mobilized more than 40 government agencies and 250,000 officials to improve protection. The Ministry of Health has given top priority for the prevention of heat-related illnesses. It urged pilgrims to use umbrellas, drink water regularly and wear light-colored, lightweight clothing. Pilgrims are also advised to avoid direct sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm, refrain from walking on hot surfaces, and exercise caution when engaging in strenuous activities

Port of NEOM receives Saudi Arabia's first automated cranes ahead of 2026 launch

NEOM — Port of NEOM has taken a major step toward becoming one of the world's most advanced and sustainable trade hubs with the arrival of Saudi Arabia's first fully automated, remote-controlled cranes. The milestone supports NEOM's plan to open Terminal 1 by 2026 and reinforces the port's strategic role on the Red Sea's East–West global trade route. The Ship-To-Shore (STS) and Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (eRTG) cranes are now operational at Port of NEOM. These next-generation machines will boost port automation, enabling high-volume container operations managed from secure remote stations, marking a shift toward a future-ready logistics workforce. Sean Kelly, Managing Director of Port of NEOM, described the achievement as a 'tangible milestone' for the region's industrial and trade ecosystem. 'We're not only accelerating industrial growth in northwest Saudi Arabia, but we're also setting a new benchmark for performance, efficiency, and innovation,' he said. The port's infrastructure build-out is progressing rapidly, including the completion of a 900-meter quay wall and deepening of the access channel to 18.5 meters—capable of accommodating the world's largest vessels transiting through the Suez Canal. Terminal 1 will feature fully automated container transport systems, increasing port efficiency and enhancing supply chain resilience across Saudi Arabia and beyond. The automation rollout is matched by investments in workforce development. A specialized training program for remote crane operators is currently underway, with ten participants — many from the local Tabuk region — undergoing a two-year course in technical operations, including Saudi women stepping into high-tech logistics roles. — SG

SFDA elected to Management Committee of MedDRA, the 6th global regulatory body

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — In a move that highlights Saudi Arabia's growing prominence in global pharmaceutical governance, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been officially elected to the Management Committee of the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA). The authority has thus become the sixth regulatory authority worldwide to join this prestigious global medical body. This election marks a pivotal milestone for both Saudi Arabia and the international scientific community, reflecting global confidence in the SFDA's regulatory excellence and the Kingdom's strategic role in advancing international harmonization in drug safety and medical product oversight. MedDRA, developed by the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), is a globally recognized standard for coding and analyzing safety data across the lifecycle of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products. It plays a central role in regulatory communication, post-market surveillance, clinical trial reporting, and signal detection. SFDA's election to the MedDRA Steering committee was confirmed during the ICH Management Committee meeting held in Madrid, Spain, from May 11–12, 2025. With this appointment, SFDA joins a group of regulators, including the European Commission, U.S. FDA, UK MHRA, Health Canada, Japan's MHLW and PMDA, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), which participates as an observer. This strategic appointment reaffirms SFDA's active leadership within ICH working groups, particularly in the areas of medical terminology and pharmacovigilance. Among its most impactful contributions is the linguistic and technical leadership demonstrated in the translation and validation of over 20,000 MedDRA terms into Arabic—a landmark initiative completed between May and October 2022. This achievement significantly facilitates the implementation of MedDRA across Arabic-speaking regions and enhances inclusive pharmacovigilance throughout the MENA region. For CEOs, scientific leaders, and policymakers, this development signals new opportunities to align regulatory frameworks, accelerate clinical development across the region, and enhance data interoperability. SFDA's presence on the MedDRA Steering Committee is not merely symbolic—it serves as a strategic platform for integrating global safety data, advancing regulatory innovation, and sharing best practices. As Saudi Arabia continues to lead in biopharma localization, digital health, and AI-driven pharmacovigilance, SFDA's role in shaping the evolution of MedDRA is set to reinforce the Kingdom's position at the forefront of global health regulation.
