EU values Kuwait as a close, reliable friend
KUWAIT CITY, March 13: Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Kuwait Anne Koistinen said that 'in these difficult times around the world, the EU values Kuwait as a close and reliable friend. Our message to the Kuwaiti leadership and government is very clear: you can count on the EU.' She affirmed 'this year is very important for our relations, as Kuwait will host the next EU-GCC ministerial meeting later this year.' Koistinen made the statement during the Ramadan Ghabqa held at her home recently. She stated 'I take this opportunity to congratulate Kuwait on assuming the rotating presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for 2025. The EU is keen on working with Kuwait to strengthen relations with the GCC during its rotating presidency.' She pointed out that the EU and Kuwait enjoy a strong friendship based on shared interests, including Kuwait's vocal support for multilateralism and the principles of good international cooperation. She added that the EU highly appreciates Kuwait's prudent and moderate positions, and believes there is much potential.
'The positive impact of our relations is also evident, as there is much we can do together at the bilateral, regional and international levels,' she stressed. She asserted that the EU and Kuwait are strong humanitarian actors supporting vulnerable communities around the world, strengthening the United Nations (UN) system and multilateral organizations, and cooperating with them. She confirmed that 'Kuwait is a key partner for the EU in the humanitarian and development fields.'She said Director General of the European Commission's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Maciej Popowski visited Kuwait last month, during which he agreed with Kuwaiti officials to continue working together on humanitarian crises and strengthening multilateralism. She said the EU is Kuwait's second largest trading partner, 'reflecting our strong economic ties.' She also emphasized that 'Gaza and Ukraine continue to remind all of us about the international community's need for an effective multilateral system based on universal rules and values that are respected by everyone. Never has respect for the UN Charter, the rules-based international order, and international law been more at stake than now.'

Five countries win seats on the UN Security Council
UNITED NATIONS, June 4, (AP): Five countries won seats on the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday in uncontested elections and will start serving two-year terms in January on the UN's most powerful but deeply divided body. The 193-member General Assembly held a secret-ballot vote for the five rotating seats on the 15-member council. Bahrain received 186 votes, Congo 183 votes, Liberia 181 votes, Colombia 180 votes and Latvia 178 votes. This will be the first time on the council for Latvia, which was forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union and gained independence again after its collapse in 1991. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže told reporters after the vote her Baltic nation is ready for the responsibility, saying, "Our historical experience puts us in the position to understand, empathize with, and forge partnerships across every region in the world.' "We know the value of freedom,' she said. "We know the fragility of peace and the power of multilateralism to safeguard it.' Braže said Latvia will spare no effort to achieve just and lasting peace in Ukraine and to alleviate suffering in the Middle East, Gaza, Africa and other conflicts around the globe. Bahrain will be the Arab representative on the council, and Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani said his country's election to the council for a second time reinforces its determination to be "a proactive contributor" to international peace and security. "Our goal is to fortify peace and stability within our region,' Al Zayani said, stressing that resolving the decades-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict is "the cornerstone for achieving peace in the region.' The immediate requirement, he said, is a ceasefire and massive influx of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the release of all hostages taken from Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and progress toward a two-state solution and "a viable state of Palestine.' The Security Council is mandated in the UN Charter with ensuring international peace and security, but it has failed in the two major conflicts because of the veto power of Russia on Ukraine and the United States. There have been decades of efforts to reform the Security Council to reflect the geopolitical realities of the world in 2025, not of the post-World War II era 80 years ago, when the United Nations was established. But they have all failed. The council still includes five veto-wielding permanent members - the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - and 10 elected members from the U.N.'s different regional groups. One major failing is the absence of a permanent seat for Africa or Latin America and the Caribbean.

Two Commerce Ministry employees sentenced to 10 years for bribery, abuse of power
KUWAIT CITY, June 4: The Criminal Court, presided over by Counselor Abdulwahab Al-Maili, sentenced two employees of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry—a supervisor and a transaction coordinator—to 10 years in prison each. In addition, they were fined 400,000 Kuwaiti dinars and dismissed from their positions. The court found them guilty of abusing their authority, accepting bribes to overlook commercial violations, and fabricating false violations. Meanwhile, the court exempted a resident from punishment after he confessed to involvement with the defendants. The Ministry of Interior had earlier announced the arrest of the two ministry employees and their accomplice on charges of exploiting their positions, accepting bribes to ignore commercial violations, and fabricating false ones. According to a press release by the General Department of Public Relations and Security Media, law enforcement received intelligence regarding individuals exploiting their roles to accept bribes. After securing legal approval, the suspects were caught red-handed receiving 50,000 Kuwaiti dinars out of an agreed total bribe of 200,000 dinars. The operation, conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is part of ongoing security efforts to combat corruption and enhance public safety. Authorities emphasized that the suspects have been referred to competent legal bodies for prosecution. Security officials stressed that the law applies equally to all, with no exceptions, and reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing anyone who threatens national security.
