Chinese exports of rare-earth magnets plummet in May

The Sun4 hours ago

BEIJING: Chinese exports of rare-earth magnets continued their downward slide in May, official data showed on Friday, reflecting restrictions imposed by Beijing during its trade war with the United States.
China is the world's leading producer of rare earths, used to make magnets essential to the automotive, electronics and defence industries.
Since April, Beijing has required traders to obtain licences before they export the strategic materials, a move seen as retaliation for US curbs on the import of Chinese goods.
Many manufacturers, particularly in the automotive sector, have bewailed what they view as sporadic licence issuances.
And Chinese customs data revealed Friday that the country's rare-earth magnet exports plummeted by 70 percent year-on-year in May, following an initial slowdown observed in April.
Exports fell below the $60 million mark, hitting their lowest level since 2015 excluding the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Bloomberg News.
After talks between China and the US in London this month, Beijing said it had issued a 'certain number' of export licences for rare earths.
US President Donald Trump said last week on his Truth Social platform that 'any necessary rare earths... will be supplied, up front, by China'.
Beijing also said it would launch a 'green channel' to facilitate rare earth exports to the European Union.
But its exports of rare-earth magnets to the EU in May plunged by 81 percent year-on-year, according to the customs figures.
And exports of small parcels to the US dropped by half compared to the previous month.
Last month, Washington ended a tariff exemption previously enjoyed by low-value parcels shipped from China and Hong Kong.
The measure dealt a severe blow to platforms shipping low-cost items from China, such as Shein and Temu.
The decline was offset by a rise in China's total small parcel exports to the rest of the world, which were up 40 percent year-on-year, with particularly notable increases to Singapore, Russia, Europe and Australia.
Besides the US, several countries have been trying to limit the rise of platforms sending cheap products made in China.
This month, France adopted a bill that aims to curb fast fashion by banning advertising and imposing an additional tax on small parcels.

East African fashion life show opens in Kenya to boost textiles, apparels trade

NAIROBI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The second edition of East Africa (Kenya) Fashion Life Show was officially opened on Friday in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, drawing over 70 exhibitors from Kenya and China. Chinese enterprises are exhibiting textiles, packaging material, baby toys, personal care products and wigs, home decor, and gift wrappers during the expo that runs from Thursday to Saturday. Yin Maolin, Party chief of Mudan District in Heze City, east China's Shandong Province, led a high-level Chinese delegation to attend the expo that will highlight the potential of East Africa as a hub for the fashion, sustainable textile, and apparel sector. According to Yin, the fashion show offers a platform for deepening economic partnership between China and Kenya, focusing on trade in high-quality manufactured products and jointly establishing seamless supply chains. Pius Rotich, general manager for investment promotion and business development services at Kenya Investment Authority, said the government has created a conducive policy and regulatory environment to spur the growth of the textile and apparel sector. Kenya is committed to a partnership with Chinese investors in a bid to manufacture high-quality leather products for export in the African market and beyond, boosting foreign exchange earnings and job creation, said Rotich. Gao Wei, managing director of Afripeak Expo Kenya Ltd., co-organizer of the 2025 East African Fashion Show, said this year's edition had grown bigger in terms of the number of visitors and exhibitors, reaffirming dynamism in the region's textile and apparel sectors. The fashion expo, according to Gao, will run under the theme of "Inspire Friendship, Connect World," bringing together Chinese and Kenyan enterprises dealing with household accessories, cosmetics, and electronics under one roof. Gao said the expo will also create a platform for Chinese business executives to network with their Kenyan counterparts, explore two-way trade in leather products. Hundreds of Kenyan visitors thronged to the East Africa Fashion expo, with the majority acknowledging their appreciation of Chinese-made products, including wigs, cosmetics and fabrics. Waceke Mwaura, a female entrepreneur, said that she was impressed by the wig showcased by Chinese exhibitors, adding that its high quality has made it popular among local clients. Mwaura said she has been importing hair from China to supply to local retailers and beauty parlors, even as she scouts for distributorship arrangements with Chinese manufacturers. Paul Munyua, a middle-aged pedicurist, said that he visited the expo to gain insight into new beauty products in the local market imported from China that are affordable to his clients.

AGC Rejects Claims Of 'Flawed Prosecution' After Najib's DNAA In Second SRC Case

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has dismissed as baseless allegations that it carried out a 'flawed prosecution' in the second SRC International Sdn Bhd case involving Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. In a statement, the AGC reiterated its firm commitment to upholding the rule of law and stated that it would continue to fulfill its responsibilities under the Federal Constitution with integrity, fairness and respect for the judicial process. However, the AGC acknowledged the decision by High Court Judge K Muniandy to grant Najib a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on three charges of money laundering involving RM27 million in funds from the company. 'The case was registered in the High Court on Feb 7, 2019, and scheduled for trial on five occasions: June 2020, July to August 2021, March to April 2022, September 2024 and April to May 2025. 'However, all trial dates were postponed due to the Movement Control Order caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, requests by the defence, or applications by the prosecution itself,' the statement read. According to the statement, the prosecution's requests for postponement were due to the ongoing trial of the first SRC case, which proceeded at the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court until its completion on March 31, 2023. At the same time, the trial proceedings for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case had also begun while the first SRC case was still ongoing. 'Both cases involved overlapping material documents required for the second SRC trial. 'As these documents were critical to the second SRC case, the prosecution had no choice but to wait until they were available, which was until the 1MDB trial proceedings were completed. 'It must be emphasised that the material documents are available but are currently being used as evidence in the ongoing 1MDB trial,' the AGC said.
