QuickCheck: Is RM1,500 being given to housewives, single mothers starting July?

The Star22-07-2025
AS the cost of living continues to rise, financial aid is always appreciated, especially for housewives and single mothers.
Recently, a claim that the government was providing financial assistance of RM1,500 for housewives and single mothers went viral.
The post on TikTok stated that applications for assistance can be submitted from July 8 to 13. It also included a screenshot of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim speaking.
Is the claim true?
Verdict:
FALSE
It turns out to be a phishing scam.
According to MyCheck, those who fell for the trap would have to send a WhatsApp message to the scammer. The victim would then receive a link designed to steal their personal information and hack their Telegram account.
Tell-tale signs that the post was fake were the misspelling of the word 'akaun' as 'akun' and the word 'Mykad' as 'mycad'. Also, the link provided by the scammers did not end with '.gov.my'.
MyCheck also said that the photo of the Prime Minister that the scammer used came from an event in Jakarta, Indonesia, that was held on Jan 9, 2023.

Anwar: RM14.79bil withdrawn from EPF's Flexible Account since May 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 4.63 million Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members have made withdrawals through the Flexible Account (Account 3), amounting to RM14.79 billion since its introduction in May 2024, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this represents 35.1 per cent of the total 13.2 million members under the age of 55 as of June. "The total balance of savings in Account 3 stands at RM10.16 billion," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN–Arau), who asked when the government would allow a special withdrawal by transferring 30 per cent of Retirement Account (Account 1) savings into Account 3 to help low-income citizens cope with the rising cost of living. Commenting further, Anwar said that previous special withdrawals allowed by the EPF — particularly from Account 1 — were intended solely to address the exceptional circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, and were temporary. He said the EPF's core mandate as a social protection institution is to ensure adequate retirement savings to support members' financial needs in old age. "Besides being contrary to the mandate and role of the EPF as trustee of members' retirement savings, withdrawals from Account 1 are not aligned with international standards. "These standards recommend that governments provide nine fundamental branches of social protection to guard against vulnerability risks throughout various life stages, with old-age risk being one of them," he said. Anwar also explained that to balance members' long-, medium-, and short-term financial needs, the EPF restructured its accounts in May 2024 into three categories: the Retirement Account (Account 1), the Sejahtera Account (Account 2), and the Flexible Account (Account 3), with respective contribution ratios of 75 per cent, 15 per cent, and 10 per cent. "Account 1 is dedicated to retirement savings, while Account 2 allows members to make pre-retirement withdrawals for purposes such as education, healthcare, and housing.

Waytha's bid to disqualify Anwar as PM ‘baseless', says PKR man

PKR's R Sivarasa said P Waytha Moorthy should ask why Anwar Ibrahim's opponents for the Tambun seat had not raised the issue during the campaign. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : PKR's R Sivarasa has labelled as baseless the argument by a former federal minister that Anwar Ibrahim should not have been elected as the Tambun MP and appointed as prime minister. Lawyer P Waytha Moorthy is seeking to disqualify Anwar on grounds that the royal pardon granted to the PKR president in 2018 did not state that he was exempt from the five-year disqualification period for contesting an election after being released from prison. Waytha, a minister in Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Cabinet from 2018 to 2020, wants the High Court to declare Anwar's election as Tambun MP on Nov 19, 2022 and his appointment as prime minister five days later null and void. Sivarasa said such reasoning showed an inability to appreciate the proper meaning of Article 48 of the Federal Constitution, which outlines the conditions under which an MP can be disqualified. He said it was a public fact that in 2018, Anwar received a full and free pardon from the king at the time, who was of the view that the conviction was a miscarriage of justice. He said the inclusion of the words 'and who has not received a free pardon' in Article 48 made clear that in receiving a free pardon, the issue of a prior conviction as a disqualifying factor did not arise. 'It is a trite principle in law, which unfortunately Waytha Moorthy does not also appear to be able to appreciate, that the effect of a full and free pardon is to wipe away Anwar's conviction completely. 'It is as if the conviction and sentence never occurred at all,' Sivarasa, who heads PKR's legal bureau, said in a statement last night. He said Waytha should instead ask why Anwar's opponents for the Tambun seat had not raised the issue during the campaign. Nor was the issue raised when Anwar was appointed as prime minister on Nov 25, 2022. 'One wonders also why he took two and three quarter years to suddenly wake up one morning having dreamed up this fatuous point. Is this case really more about trying to stay politically relevant in any possible way?' DAP's Syahredzan Johan had also questioned whether the suit filed by Waytha against Anwar was linked to Waytha's recent meeting with Bersatu leaders. The Bangi MP said that while anyone had the right to file court proceedings, the suit against Anwar appeared 'frivolous and vexatious' as the latter had been prime minister for close to three years. Waytha, president of the Malaysian Advancement Party, was among the leaders from political parties outside the government bloc who met Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to discuss the formation of a united opposition front.
