Liu Mengting takes second Asian Winter Games gold, Hong Kong's curlers win big

China's athletes won four gold medals at the Asian Winter Games on Wednesday, led by freestyle skier Liu Mengting's second gold in 24 hours.
Liu's latest triumph in Harbin came in the women's freeski big air event.
A day after she led Yang Ruyi and Han Linshan in a Chinese clean sweep of the podium in the women's freeski slopestyle, the same trio again filled the medal positions, with Han this time beating Yang to the silver.

Two further golds came in cross-country skiing, in the women's 4x5km relay and the men's 4x7.5km relay.

The top seed from Belarus won through 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 against the Chinese eighth seed in just under two hours on Court Philippe Chatrier. The 27-year-old fought back after struggling in the first set against Zheng, who had beaten her in the last eight on clay in Rome last month, extending her record against the Chinese player to 7-1. "The last tournament I was pretty exhausted," said Sabalenka. "Today I was more fresh I was ready to battle, to fight and give everything. "Honestly, I was actually glad that I lost that match because I needed a little break before Roland Garros." Zheng broke and led 4-2 in the first set. But numerous unforced errors – 31 in total – allowed the Belarusian to come back. The second set was also tight before Sabalenka broke back to lead 4-3, taking advantage of her opponent's errors. Sabalenka converted her first match point on a poorly-controlled drop-shot from Zheng to reach her seventh semifinal of the season. In another quarterfinal, Swiatek bested the former world number three Svitolina of Ukraine 6-1, 7-5 in just over 90 minutes to continue her bid to equal a 102-year record by winning four successive French Open titles. Photo: Reuters Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen advanced to the last 16 of the French Open on Friday, along with with top women's seed Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek – who kept her bid for a fourth consecutive title at Roland Garros on track. Zheng ended the run of Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-4. The Chinese eighth seed has now won nine successive matches at Roland Garros following her run to Olympic gold last year. "We had some really good points, it was not an easy match," said Zheng. "Today was a tough battle against Qinwen," said 18-year-old Grand Slam newcomer Mboko. "Lots of things to learn and hopefully come back to my next tournament with some more positives and (having) improved on my game." Zheng is through to the fourth round in Paris for the second time and will next Russian 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova who brushed aside Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-3. Zheng and Samsonova will both be bidding for a first Roland Garros quarter-final berth. Swiatek came through despite a very close second set against Romania's world number 60 Jaqueline Cristian, winning 6-2, 7-5 in nearly two hours in sweltering conditions on Court Suzanne Lenglen. "Before it was 20 degrees when I played my first match but today it was 30 degrees. It is not easy to adjust but I have played in every condition," said Swiatek. The 23-year-old Pole awaits the winner of a big-hitting showdown between Elena Rybakina and Jelena Ostapenko, who has beaten Swiatek in all six of their previous meetings. A former world number one, who has fallen to fifth in the WTA rankings, Swiatek has not won a title since her third consecutive title on the Parisian clay in 2024. Earlier Sabalenka produced a dominant display in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Serbian left-hander Olga Danilovic. "Olga is a fighter. I enjoyed our battle," said Madrid Open winner Sabalenka after beating her 34th-ranked rival in 79 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. The 27-year-old Belarusian next plays 16th-seeded American Amanda Anisimova for a place in the quarter-finals. (AFP)
