'His belts were stolen' Tyson Fury's dad John lashes out in stunning rant

Daily Mirror09-05-2025

Tyson Fury lost his heavyweight title last year in defeat to Oleksandr Usyk and has since hung up his gloves but his father, John, reckons his son's belts were controversially stolen
John Fury has claimed his son's heavyweight titles were stolen from him in a stunning rant. Tyson Fury dropped his belts to Oleksandr Usyk last year via a split decision.
But the Gypsy King failed to reclaim his crown when he fell to a unanimous defeat in the rematch and Fury Sr reckons his son actually emerged victorious in both fights. Ukranian star Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years after their first meeting.

Two judges scored the bout 115-112 and 114-113 in his favour, with the third showed Fury as the winner 113-114. The ex-cruiserweight then vacated his IBF belt to enter a rematch Fury in December and saw all three judges ruling the contest 116-112 for Usyk.

Fury Sr was not present in the corner at the second fight, after being part of a three-man team in the first. But John has now given his verdict on the decisions and suggested they couldn't afford to pay Fury if he remained champion.
'He had them stolen off him, to be honest,' Fury Sr explained to Seconds Out Boxing.
'What can you say? When somebody's paid you a shed load of money they seem to resent letting you stay champion as well…
'They probably didn't want to pay him the same amount of money again, probably couldn't afford to pay Tyson that same money again if they let him remain as champion.'
Fury Sr did admit that the Gypsy King's .

'For me, he won both fights," Fury Sr continued. "He didn't look in fantastic shape in the second one.
'In the first one, he needed more rest time – he put a full camp in, seven weeks, got cut, he had three weeks rest, and he's back in the gym for another eight weeks.
'You can't do those things, so by the time he got in the ring for the first fight with Usyk he had overtrained; there was nothing left in him.
'But, he was facing a $10-15million fine, he was backed in a corner, I told him, 'Take the fine, take the fine,' I said, 'They're not going to fine you, because there's no show without you.'"
Fury has since retired from boxing but there remains speculation he could make a return to the ring. Responding to an Instagram post of an interview with Usyk suggesting another fight could be on the cards, Fury seemed to suggest a clash in the United Kingdom could make a trilogy.

The brutal message from rising Australian boxing star Jai Opetaia after shattering opponent's jaw: 'I was in a rush'

Rising Aussie fighter Jai Opetaia has revealed the savage reason why he dealt with his latest fashion in a swift and brutal fashion before calling out Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramírez. Opetaia delivered another commanding performance on the Gold Coast, defending his IBF and The Ring cruiserweight titles. The Australian champion stopped unbeaten Italian challenger Claudio Squeo in the fifth round with a thunderous right hook. Moments after the fight, news broke that Squeo had likely suffered a broken jaw. 'It was a matter of time,' commentator Ben Damon said as the referee waved the bout off. Opetaia later told the crowd why he dispatched his latest challenger in such efficient - and savage - style. All too easy for Jai Opetaia #OpetaiaSqueo — Ben Damon (@ben_damon) June 8, 2025 Claudio Squeo entered the ring undefeated but was overwhelmed by Opetaia's reach, power and relentless forward pressure 'I was just in a rush, I just really wanted to get him out of here,' he said. It was a chillingly honest remark from a fighter who has become known for both his patience and ferocity. The fight began cautiously, with Opetaia feeling out his opponent in the opening round. By the second, he had found his rhythm, landing clean blows and showing off his footwork. 'The intensity has dialled right up,' Damon said during the third as Squeo began to retreat. Cracks appeared in the Italian's defence as Opetaia pushed forward with increasing pressure. In the fourth, the crowd erupted in boos after a controversial crumpled from a crushing body shot, but the referee ruled Opetaia had held him. Replays showed the punch landed cleanly in the chest, not low as Squeo had signalled. It didn't matter. In the fifth, Opetaia closed the show. He marched forward and crushed Squeo's jaw with a brutal right hook. Squeo dropped to his knees, grabbed his face and couldn't continue. 'He knew it was hurt straight away,' said Ted Cofie in commentary. Opetaia, who broke his own jaw in the same ring in 2022 against Mairis Briedis, showed no sympathy. Instead, he turned his attention to unification. 'I'm chasing these unification fights. I'm chasing these world champions,' Opetaia said. That means WBO and WBA titleholder Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramírez is now firmly in his sights. Ramírez is set to face Yuniel Dorticos on June 28, with Opetaia planning to be ringside. 'Next fight is Zurdo Ramírez,' Opetaia said. 'He's mentioned me, he's told me he'll fight me next … so let's get it on.' The 29-year-old then stared down the broadcast camera and repeated his challenge: 'Let's get it on.' Opetaia's win moved his record to a perfect 28-0, with many of those victories ending in highlight-reel knockouts. Despite being one of the world's most dangerous punchers, his technical skill often goes unnoticed. His height, reach, and power were too much for the Italian, who entered undefeated with a 17-0 record. Opetaia thanked the packed crowd and gave a special shoutout to fans from Australia and the Pacific Islands. 'We did what we have to do. We've got a lot more to go,' he said.

Michail Antonio shares footage as he learns to walk again after horrific crash

West Ham star Michail Antonio was involved in a horror car crash in December last year and has given a behind-the-scenes look at his gruelling recovery which involved learning how to walk again Michail Antonio has shared a video of his recovery from his horror car crash after vowing to return to football. The West Ham star was involved in an awful collision in December last year in Essex. His Ferrari was at the heart of a single-vehicle collision, leaving him with a broken leg. Antonio immediately underwent surgery for his shocking injury but was discharged from hospital three weeks later. ‌ Antonio, 35, has now taken to Instagram to give supporters a look at his gruelling recovery, alongside the caption: "Faith will overcome all challenges". The video which appeared on his official social media began with the wreckage of Antonio's car, while it also showed him in hospital immediately after the incident. ‌ Antonio then shared videos of him walking with a frame alongside doctors, as well as a clip of West Ham teammates visiting him in hospital. Other videos then show him at the Hammers' training ground on crutches, with the striker eventually gaining strength to walk unaided. The veteran is then pictured hard at work in West Ham's gym. The Jamaican international's emotional return to the London Stadium is also documented. The video then ends with Antonio training with a ball, as well as him being given a round of applause by his West Ham team-mates upon his return to team sessions. A number of his colleagues have replied to the update. Tomas Soucek replied with three heart emojis, while Vladimir Coufal wrote: "Respect brother". Ex-West Ham captain and current Arsenal star Declan Rice also replied as he wrote: "Monster." Antonio's latest update comes after he admitted he was close to being killed in the smash. "The most difficult part is that I almost wasn't there for my children," Antonio told the BBC's Morning Live. "It's just made me happy, positive about life, because I've got another chance at life. "During this, we kept it away from the kids. My eldest saw it, and he struggled with it. He's 13, and obviously people were showing photos of the car. So he came down and saw me in the hospital. But the younger ones, they never really knew how bad the situation was. We kind of avoided letting them get on the internet." ‌ He added: "It gave me a weird feeling in my stomach. It just made me realise how close I was to dying. I had seen the pictures but it was 10 times worse in person. The car was an absolute mess. It was difficult for me." Despite that, Antonio vowed to be back on the pitch. His West Ham contract comes to an end this summer. "Yes, 100 per cent. I will play again," he said. "It's the biggest injury I've ever had in my career. But the fact that I'm already two to three months ahead of where I should be, I know that I'll play again, and I know that once I'm playing the game I'll get the sharpness back. "People have always doubted me. My mental strength is something that I've always believed in and this is just another setback, and it is not going to stop me."
