Blues ink Milan Lucic to tryout contract after year away from NHL
Milan Lucic is getting another crack at the NHL. The St. Louis Blues announced Tuesday morning that they had signed the 37-year-old winger to a professional tryout agreement. Lucic played four games last season with the Boston Bruins, but went on indefinite leave after he was arrested on Nov. 18 and charged with assault and battery of a family member. Charges were dropped in February when Lucic's wife Brittany refused to testify. He spent the remainder of last season in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program, according to the Blues news release. 5 must-see home games on Soo Greyhounds' 2025-26 schedule
The dog days of summer are quickly winding down, the Soo Greyhounds aren't entering the race to host the Memorial Cup, and another OHL season is on the horizon. Article content With the weather cooling off and players slowly trickling back into the Sault, now is as good a time as any to circle a few games off their schedule to pay close attention to. Article content After a middling regular season and first-round exit last campaign, the Hounds are poised for a more competitive 2025-26 season — one where they could very well push more chips into the middle. Article content Article content Brady Martin, selected fifth overall in the NHL Draft, is expected to play a central role in the Greyhounds' offence this season. NHL draftees Marco Mignosa and Travis Hayes are likely to contribute on the wings, while defencemen Chase Reid and Callum Croskery are regarded as potential early selections in the 2026 NHL draft. In goal, Landon Miller returns following a season in which he handled a significant workload. Article content Article content The Greyhounds open the season on home ice against the Saginaw Spirit, who should be a handful for the Hounds. A lot will depend on whether Saginaw is led by Michael Misa and Zayne Parekh, who are likely to be starting the year with the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames. Article content Regardless, opening night can set the tone for the season, and Saginaw will be the Hounds' most frequent opponent, with seven more tilts to come following the season opener. Article content Article content Rivalry week Article content The OHL is introducing its first-ever rivalry week, and fittingly, the Hounds will square off against the Sudbury Wolves in a home-and-home series. They'll head to Sudbury on Oct. 17 before returning home for the rematch on Oct. 18. Article content With four additional games against the Wolves after October, this rivalry matchup will play a key role in the standings and playoff positioning. Article content Even before the announcement that Jeff Carter's No. 7 will be raised to the rafters, this would've been a must-see game if only to witness the back-to-back OHL champion London Knights in their first visit to the Sault. Article content Now, it's a perfect 2-in-1 event. Article content The last time the Hounds retired a number was back in 2023 for Joe Thornton, which produced plenty of waterworks for 'Jumbo Joe.' Expect another tear-jerker with Carter and his family in attendance for his banner raising ceremony.

Kitchener Rangers prepare to make bid for Memorial Cup
The Kitchener Rangers team bus is seen parked outside the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on September 2, 2024. (Shelby Knox/CTV News) Two local Ontario Hockey League teams will be competing to host a major tournament. A spokesperson for the Kitchener Rangers confirmed the team's intention to make a bid for the 2027 Memorial Cup to CTV News on Monday. The Memorial Cup is one of the most sought-after trophies in junior hockey. It was first awarded in 1919 to honour people who had died fighting in the First World War. Each year the top teams from the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League and the host team compete for the cup. The tournament is typically held during two weeks in May and attracts thousands of fans from across the country. The Guelph Storm has already announced their plans to also pursue the hosting duties as the city prepares to celebration its 200th anniversary during that same year. City council has already thrown their support behind the storm, pledging a one-time grant of $600,000 if the team's bid is successful. The Guelph Storm has never won the tournament, but the Kitchener Rangers claimed victory in 1982 and 2003.
