Jockey who ‘practically jumped off' favourite at start facing investigation

Daily Mirror09-07-2025
Video of rider Lemos 'Lai Lai' De Souza's fall from Pacific Power raised eyebrows among numerous punters as it was shared across social media
A jockey who 'practically jumped off' a hot favourite right at the start of a race is facing a stewards' investigation. Brazilian rider Lemos 'Lai Lai' De Souza, 33, is one of the leading riders in Malaysia with 31 wins in 2025. He needs one more victory to reach 300 winners in the region.
De Souza was aboard Pacific Power in the ninth race at Selangor Turf Club on Sunday. The two-year-old had finished placed in his three previous starts.

He went off favourite for the 7f race but punters learned their fate as soon as the starting gates opened when De Souza immediately fell off and hit the ground. Drawn in barrier one, on the inside, De Souza appeared to throw himself to his left as he came off.

Race commentator Devon Pretorius said: 'Lai Lai De Souza has come off. Not too sure what happened there, but he's come straight off the horse straight from the start, so Pacific Power is riderless and Lai Lai De Souza is down at the start.'
De Souza managed to get back on his feet and walk to an ambulance and once the race was completed Pretorius went back to have another look at the incident.
'A quick look at the replay here,' he said. 'Pacific Power jumps. I'm not too sure if the saddle slipped and then he pretty much knew his fate about 10 metres out of the starting and just practically jumped off the horse as he knew he wasn't going to get his foot back in the irons on his right side.'

Footage of the incident has had thousands of views on social media with many observers coming to their own conclusions.
One comment said: 'Looked like a 100% jump to me. Stewards should come down real hard.' Other remarks included: 'Gee just missed the landing otherwise would have been a 10. Thats so obvious' and 'I''m no expert but looks like he took a dive!'

Not everyone shared the same view, with one punter saying, 'Nah, he copped a whack coming out the stalls, the fave wasn't having a bar of it. It still hurts when you jump off, so I doubt Lemos would do that.'
The stewards report noted: 'Jockey was dislodged from his horse shortly after the start. A review into this incident will be held at a date to be fixed.'
However the review faces delay as De Souza, who gave up his remaining rides, has reportedly left the country to get medical attention and is believed to be in Singapore.
According to The Straight he is also preparing materials for his defence.

'I wanted to stay at Liverpool but what Jurgen Klopp said changed my transfer stance'

Fabinho has reflected on his decision to leave Liverpool for Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023 and the role that Jurgen Klopp played in the transfer Fabinho confessed that he was reluctant to leave Liverpool when he sealed his move to Al-Ittihad during the summer of 2023. The Brazilian midfielder joined the Saudi Pro League club in a £40million transfer after five years at Anfield. ‌ The 31-year-old played in 219 matches throughout his spell with the Reds, netting 11 goals and providing nine assists. He was instrumental as Liverpool triumphed in the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup, and European Super Cup. ‌ However, Fabinho's performances declined during his final campaign with the Reds as Jurgen Klopp's squad failed to secure Champions League qualification. Liverpool embarked on a midfield overhaul during the summer of 2023, acquiring Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch for slightly more than £151m. ‌ Fabinho was among several midfield exits, as Jordan Henderson was also offloaded to Saudi Arabia, while James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all departed as free agents. Reflecting on his exit, Fabinho admitted he was unwilling to leave and hadn't anticipated Liverpool being prepared to sell him. However, following discussions with Klopp, he decided it was the right time to move on. "Liverpool is a sensational club that helps us with everything," he told the Guardian. "Not just on the pitch but in your life too. "Everything they've done for me and my family has been spectacular; I've never seen anything like it. Everywhere you go, not only in England, the supporters show a lot of love for the club and the players. ‌ "I didn't want to leave the club and go to any other club in Europe. I thought it was the best place in the world to play, to keep developing as a player. "I wanted my legacy and my history at the club to grow even more but our last season was very gruelling, tiring. We didn't do well and failed to qualify for the Champions League. I lost my position as a starter for a few games, but that happens. ‌ "I came back for the following season, even though the previous one hadn't been good, with a very good mentality and wanting to fight for the Premier League title again. But before the season started, Al-Ittihad made an offer for me and the Liverpool directors said it was very good for the club and for me. "I was afraid and decided to wait to see what [the coaching staff] would say. I thought I was an important player and that they would refuse any offer, but I realised that the club was open to selling me." "He (Jurgen Klopp) called me and asked me what I wanted. I said that I'd heard the offer and liked it but that I wanted to hear from him what he thought," Fabinho added. ‌ "He said that if there are any players who want to leave, he won't hold them back. It was a speech that kind of opened the door for me to leave. "That conversation with the coach could have kept me at the club but he left it open and I didn't like it very much. I always like to do a prayer before I make my decisions. Liverpool is a club I love but the things that happened at the time steered my life towards Arabia. I left in peace and happy with my decision." ‌ Since his departure from Liverpool, Fabinho has become a key player for Al-Ittihad, making 67 appearances and playing a crucial role in their Saudi Pro League and King's Cup double last season. However, with an eye on a potential return to the Brazil national team for the 2026 World Cup, he hasn't completely ruled out a return to European football, although a Premier League comeback seems unlikely. "My goal is to play in the [2026] World Cup," he said. "I'm working towards it. I performed very well last season. "That made me very happy and I was able to show myself that I still have a lot of quality and that I can help the Brazilian national team. I'm happy at Al-Ittihad, I really like it here. The Brazilian league is also an option – it is getting stronger and stronger – but I also want to go back to Europe. "I want to play and fight for another Champions League title. The Premier League is still the best league in the world, but I think I'd prioritise another country that I haven't had the chance to play in yet."

Swansea reach second round of Carabao Cup with victory over 10-man Crawley

The 20-year-old striker was signed from Scottish club Kilmarnock this summer and wasted no time in making an impact after taking over from Zan Vipotnik up front in the 64th minute. Up until that point the Swans had struggled to add to the fourth-minute goal – their first of the season – from their Brazilian winger Ronald. Chance after chance went begging until Wales found the net. The referee ruled out a goal from Ethan Galbraith in the 37th minute for offside interference as Vipotnik jumped over the ball to let it go through his legs, and Ronald missed a sitter at the back post as he pushed a cross from another new boy, Zeidane Inoussa, over the bar from point-blank range. Crawley keeper Harvey Davies made a string of important saves to further frustrate the home side, while Kabongo Tshimanga gave the League Two visitors a glimmer of hope with his side's first goal of the season in the 75th minute. The sending off of substitute Gavan Holohan for a strong tackle on Goncalo Franco in the 83rd minute then ended their hopes of a fightback and Galbraith added a third for the home side in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Man Utd transfer news: Benjamin Sesko deal cancels protest as Antony ultimatum issued

A Manchester United protest has been called off in light of the club landing the signing of Benjamin Sesko as Antony's future remains front and centre with the transfer deadline closing in Manchester United's frontline has been transformed by an impressive summer of recruitment with three new faces setting them back more than £200million. The capture of Benjamin Sesko, presented to Old Trafford on Saturday, means Ruben Amorim has addressed the lack of goals in his team last season. With the season fast approaching it is unlikely that any new faces will arrive before they play Arsenal on Sunday. However Amorim has made it clear he would like a new midfielder with Brighton's Carlos Baleba continuing to be linked with a move to Manchester. He's excelled at the Amex but, given the fee the Seagulls would demand, there's an acceptance that any deal could prove challenging. PSG 's Gianluigi Donnarumma is another player who could be on the move with the Parisians leaving him out of their squad for this week's European Super Cup. PSG are open to his exit with United among those keen. Here's the latest news lines from the Red Devils. Sesko signing cancels protest Manchester United supporters group The 1958 has pulled the plug on a planned protest. The group had planned to march against Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ownership ahead of United's opening Premier League game, against Arsenal. Their decision comes just days after Sesko joined the club. The striker signing in a deal worth up to £74m. In early August, The 1958 shared plans for a protest while claiming "shiny new signings" shouldn't distract from minority owner Ratcliffe's involvement. However, following a mixed response to the announcement, the group then put the plans to its membership. While the majority of those surveyed agreed Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS should be judged on what they have delivered, some 68 percent felt they deserved more time to show what they can do. In announcing the postponement of the march, The 1958 published a breakdown of the voting. Antony ultimatum issued The Red Devils have issued winger Antony with an ultimatum as the Brazilian attempts to secure a move to Real Betis. The club have demanded the Brazilian winger to accept a transfer offer this week or risk remaining on the sidelines at Old Trafford until January. The La Liga side want to see the former Ajax man return to the club but want to hang on until the final moments of the transfer window to close a deal with United for a loan with option or obligation to buy. But those on the red side of Manchester want to seal an exit, according to reports in Spain, and have already received offers that they would deem financially suitable and do not want to regard Betis as their only option. Lewandowsi eyed Man Utd move Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he "said yes" to the opportunity to move to Manchester to play under Sir Alex Ferguson - only for the move never to happen. The Barcelona star has been one of Europe's outstanding No 9s for more than a decade, but a different path may have seen him play at Old Trafford under the Scot in his final year as a manager. It was in 2012 that he gave the green light to move to Manchester from Borussia Dortmund for what would've been the final spell of Ferguson's stint in Manchester. The interest came off the back of a season where Lewandowski claimed the Bundesliga title, scoring 30 times. The Polish star told the BBC: "To Manchester United I decided and said yes. I wanted to join Manchester United, to see Alex Ferguson."
