First Four: Columbia, William & Mary earn first NCAA wins
Columbia (24-6), playing in the First Four for the second straight season, won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in program history. The Lions earned the No. 11 seed in the Birmingham 2 Region and will face No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday.
The Lions rallied after trailing 21-10 at the end of the first quarter and 34-21 at halftime. Weiss scored 19 of her points and made four of her five 3-pointers in the second half.
She started the second half with a personal 7-0 run -- two triples and one free throw -- to give Columbia its first lead of the night. She hit one more 3-pointer after the Huskies tied the game.
Sayvia Sellers made consecutive buckets to help Washington pull even at 54-54 with 3:34 left, but Susie Rafiu's layup 30 seconds later restored the Lions' lead for good. Weiss added four important free throws down the stretch as Elle Ladine tried to will the Huskies back with a pair of late 3-pointers.
Sellers had 21 points and six assists to power the Huskies (19-14). Dalayah Daniels put up 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Ladine added 16 points and six boards.
Washington lost despite outshooting Columbia 52.9 percent to 40.7 percent from the field. The Huskies went a paltry 3-for-10 from the free-throw line compared with the 12-of-17 clip by Columbia.
Cecelia Collins scored 12 points for the Lions.
William & Mary 69, High Point 63
In its first-ever NCAA Tournament game, the Pride kept their run going behind a game-high 24 points from Bella Nascimento and eliminated the sss in a First Four matchup at Austin, Texas.
Winners of five straight games, the 16th-seeded Tribe (16-18) advance to the first round Saturday against top-seeded Texas in the Birmingham 3 Region.
Monet Dance added 15 for William & Mary, which won four games in four days as the No. 9 seed to win the Coastal Athletic Association tournament and then came up with big plays down the stretch to extend its season. Natalie Fox scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Cassidy Gerdes chipped in 12 points.
Lauren Scott scored 19 points to pace High Point (21-12), which trailed 34-28 at halftime but battled back to take a three-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Aaliyah Collins added 18 points and Jaleesa Lawrence contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.
Lawrence nailed a 3-pointer with 2:52 remaining in the game to tie the score at 57, but the Tribe regained the lead for good on Fox's putback at the 2:11 mark. William & Mary sealed the outcome by making six straight foul shots in the final 27.1 seconds.

August 17 - Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies held on to defeat the host Washington Nationals 11-9 on Sunday. The Phillies, who blew an early 6-0 lead, earned a split in the four-game series. Bohm, returning to action from the 10-day injured list (rib), drove in three runs and scored twice in his first game since July 18. The Nationals, who got a three-run homer from Paul DeJong - his sixth - in the ninth to make it close, had won three of their last four. Philadelphia's Jhoan Duran got the final two outs for his 21st save. Tanner Banks (5-2) got the win and P.J. Poulin (0-1) took the loss. Phillies starter Aaron Nola allowed six runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Phillies welcome back Aaron Nola in finale vs. Nats
August 17 - The Philadelphia Phillies expect to welcome back one of their star pitchers on Sunday, a day after they placed another on the injured list. Aaron Nola will make his long-awaited return to the rotation on as the Phillies vie for a split of their four-game series against the host Washington Nationals. Nola (1-7, 6.16 ERA) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to make his first start with Philadelphia since May 14. The right-hander went on the injured list two days later with a sprained right ankle, and then dealt with a stress fracture in his right rib cage. Nola fared well in his third rehab outing with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, striking out 11 batters in 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday in Buffalo, N.Y. "It felt good to get the pitch count up a little bit and get back in the sixth inning," Nola said, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The arm feels great; the ankle feels good. I'm glad to be able to finally get back on the field and catch and throw normally. I'm just excited to get back on the mound again for these guys and give them a chance to win again." The National League East-leading Phillies would like that very much, given that they lost for the fourth time in five games with a 2-0 setback to Washington on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia was unable to solve Cade Cavalli, as the latter tossed seven scoreless innings to pocket his first win of his career. James Wood slapped a two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to provide all the offense that Cavalli would need. Shortly after that defeat, the Phillies announced ace right-hander Zack Wheeler is headed to the 15-day injured list due to a blood clot in his right arm. There is no timetable for his return. "There's not a lot that we can say on it at this time," said Dave Dombrowski, the team's president of baseball operations. "It could have been a much more trying situation than it is." As for Nola, he is one season removed from recording 14 wins -- his most since he erupted for 17 in 2018. Nola, 32, allowed two homers and five runs total on six hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 5-1 setback at Washington on March 30. He is 10-9 with a 3.75 ERA in 34 career appearances (all starts) versus the Nationals. Nola may not be the only returning member of the Phillies, as third baseman Alec Bohm also is expected to be recalled from Lehigh Valley. Bohm has been sidelined since July 19 with a rib fracture. Trea Turner recorded his second three-hit performance of the series on Saturday. The speedy Turner is 8-for-14 in the set. Washington left-hander Mitchell Parker (7-13, 5.55) will be tasked with keeping Turner in check when he starts Sunday's game. Parker, 25, got the better of Nola in that game on March 30. The former scattered seven hits and struck out five batters over 6 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win on that day. All told, Parker is 1-1 with a bloated 8.68 ERA in 9 1/3 innings over two career encounters versus the Phillies. He hasn't fared well of late, going 0-3 with a 10.67 ERA in three starts this month. He allowed just two hits -- albeit with five runs -- in 5 1/3 innings in an 8-5 setback to the Royals in Kansas City on Tuesday. "It still (stinks). It's still a loss," Parker said.
