Gujarat govt to seek ₹2.70 cr from Air India for property loss in crash

Business Standard19 hours ago

The Gujarat government will demand ₹2.70 crore from Air India to cover the loss of resident doctors' belongings after a London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad last week, a state minister said on Wednesday.
However, no decision has yet been taken on compensation for those killed on the ground, including four MBBS students, said Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, who also serves as the state government's spokesperson.
Air India flight AI171, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into the hostel and canteen of B J Medical College in the Meghaninagar area shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on 12 June. The crash killed 241 people on board and 29 individuals on the ground.
'As per our assessment, properties (personal belongings) of ₹2.70 crore of resident doctors (who used to live in the hostel at the time of plane crash) were damaged. We will claim that from Air India,' he said.
Patel also clarified that the state government is not involved in the ongoing investigation. 'The Ministry of Civil Aviation along with various other central government agencies are probing the plane crash and the state government does not have any role in the ongoing investigation,' he said.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: 8-Month-Old, Youngest Victim On Ground, Recovering From Burns

Last Updated: Dhyaansh, the youngest among those injured in the crash, suffered 28 per cent burns and had to be admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Civil Hospital. In the devastating Air India flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad last week, which claimed over 270 lives, an eight-month-old boy, youngest of all the victims, suffered burn injuries and is undergoing treatment. When the aircraft plunged into the BJ Medical College's residential complex moments after take off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, Manisha Kachhadiya and her 8-month-old son Dhyaansh were in one of the buildings affected by the crash. Dhyaansh, who is the youngest among all the injured, suffered 28% burns and is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad where he has been admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), news agency PTI reported. Dhyaansh's father Kapil Kachhadiya said that the infant's condition is improving but is still in PICU for observation. 'He (Dhyaansh) is improving. He is still in the PICU and should be shifted to the general ward in a day or two," Kapil said as quoted by the news agency. He said when the crash occurred, Manisha also suffered injuries. But, she picked up their son and fled the spot. Her condition is stable and is currently undergoing treatment in the general ward of the hospital, he added. Kapil is pursuing his super-speciality MCh degree course in urology at the BJ Medical College. Kapil was at the Medical College when the plane crash occurred. The magnitude of the crash was so intense that the subsequent fire caused burn injuries to his wife Manisha, who is a homeopath, and son Dhyaansh, despite being inside a flat. 241 out of 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 (AI 171) and another 29 persons, including five MBBS students, on the ground were killed in the crash. One person survived the tragedy. The lone survivor was identified as Indian-origin British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh who was returning to the UK with his brother Ajay Kumar Rakesh, 45, who was in a different row inside the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Meanwhile, 211 victims have been identified so far through DNA matching, while 189 bodies are handed over to their families. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or severely damaged. The aircraft had 232 passengers and 10 crew members, including 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and a Canadian, on board. First Published: June 19, 2025, 17:08 IST

"Thought Pak Fired Missile": Student To NDTV On Air India Plane Crashing Into Hostel

When the walls of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad started crumbling and a large amount of debris, including roof rubble, began falling, Keshav Bhadana did not think a plane would have crashed. Instead, going by the damages and an "explosion-like sound", he thought that Pakistan must have attacked India and launched a missile that ultimately fell at the college campus. "It was lunch time. At around 1.30 pm, I was eating with my friends at the mess when suddenly, the walls began to collapse and the ceiling began to fall. At first, it seemed like a dust storm. We then thought it must have been an earthquake," the second year MBBS student from Faridabad said. "Then I thought Pakistan must have attacked with a missile. I put my hands on my face out of fear. The moment I removed my hands from my face, I saw suitcases falling from above. Then I thought it must have been a plane crash," he added. On June 12, London-bound Air India 171 flight, belonging to Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 fleet, crashed seconds after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport. Officials said the aircraft lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30pm. It crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Meghaninagar area before going up in flames, sending plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air. The pilot had issued a 'Mayday' distress call, denoting a full emergency, soon after takeoff, the Air Traffic Control at Ahmedabad said. Two hundred and seventy four people - both on board the aircraft and on the ground - were killed in the crash. The toll included nine doctors from the college and their relatives. Bhadana's remarks on fears of a possible missile attack by Pakistan came against the backdrop of last month's strikes and counterstrikes between New Delhi and Islamabad, which were triggered by Operation Sindoor. Operation Sindoor - that targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir - was in return launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The border states of Rajasthan, Punjab and Gujarat were on high alert in view of Pakistan's missile strikes on Indian territories. Bhadana, who lost four of his friends in the crash, said: "I saw a wall falling on me. As I fell backwards, I suffered injuries on my hands, legs and head. My legs were buried under the rubble," Bhadana, who also suffered injuries, said. "At the time of the accident, 50 children were eating on my floor. There were six friends sitting at my table. Four of them were killed in the crash. One of them was a very close friend of mine and I miss him," he added. The student said the situation turned tense after the cylinders at the mess started exploding. "We were on the first floor of the mess. Everyone was screaming... There was black smoke everywhere, so nothing was visible. Suddenly, the cylinders in the mess started exploding," he said. "Many people had stopped showing signs of any movement. Maybe they had died. We came out with great difficulty," he added. He said he was visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the hospital. "He gave me a lot of mental strength. He told me not to worry and reminded me that I was a doctor," he said. "We will go back to college soon. It will take some time for normalcy to resume. We will sit in the class and eat in the mess but some of our friends will not be there. It will be very sad," he added.
