FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Guide: Everything you need to know about football's all new event

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Guide: The new tournament in the footballing calendar, the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup kicked off in earnest on Sunday in the USA with a goalless draw between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly. FIFA hopes the four-yearly event will be to club football what the World Cup is to international soccer and establish itself as one of the biggest and wealthiest tournaments in sport.
But the tournament had already faced backlash with players and coaches alike, lambasting it as a soul-less cash grab in an already congested football calendar which is detrimental to players' performance and health. The new Club World Cup is a supersized version of what used to be a short tournament with only seven teams. The new edition includes 32 teams from around the world and will be held every four years, starting next summer in the United States from June 14 to July 13. As its name suggests, it's envisioned to be club version of the World Cup for national teams.
That means top players will have a monthlong tournament on top of their domestic league season three out of every four years. With more games also added to the Champions League in Europe this season as well as the next World Cup in 2026, the calendar is filling up quickly.
The Club World Cup has been expanded from seven teams to 32 and will emulate the men's and women's World Cups. Eight groups of four teams will play in a round robin mini league, with the top two advancing to a knockout stage, which runs from the round of 16 through to the final.

Bayern Munich register record-breaking win in FIFA Club World Cup history; beat Auckland City 10-0

Bayern Munich registered a stunning performance at the FIFA Club World Cup, by beating New Zealand's Auckland City with a remarkable 10-0 victory. Under the guidance of manager Vincent Kompany Bayern showcased standout performances from Jamal Musiala, Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman, and Michael Olise to clinch the win. The club scripted history by setting a benchmark for the biggest win in the tournament. Bayern Munich dominated the entire match with their attacking skills as several players contributed to the scoreline. Kingsley Coman opened the scoring in the 6th minute and added another goal in the 21st minute. Sacha Boey found the net in the 18th minute, strengthening Bayern's early command. Michael Olise was a standout performer, scoring twice—first in the 20th minute and then again in the 3rd minute of first-half stoppage time (45'+3'). Veteran player Thomas Muller contributed with a goal in the 45th minute and in the 89th minute. Jamal Musiala sealed the performance in the second half of the match against Auckland City. He scored in the 67th minute and converted a penalty in the 73rd minute. He went on to score another goal in the 84th minute. Bayern Munich's one-sided victory rewrote the record books, surpassing Al Hilal's previous tournament high of 6-1. Al Hilal registered the scoreline back in the year 2022. The match showcased the depth and quality of Bayern's squad, with Kompany's tactical approach allowing his players to express themselves freely. For Auckland, the defeat was a harsh lesson, but facing one of Europe's elite clubs provided invaluable experience. Bayern Munich have their next match against Club Atletico Boca Juniors on June 21, followed by their third FIFA Club World Cup game against SL Benfica on June 25. Auckland City are scheduled to play their next match against SL Benfica on June 20, followed by a match against Club Atletico Boca Juniors on June 25

Patrick Mahomes vs Lionel Messi popularity battle heats up as Fox Sports hosts declare a clear winner

Patrick Mahomes vs Lionel Messi popularity battle heats up as Fox sports hosts declare a clear winner (Image via Getty) Two of the most well-known names in sports are Patrick Mahomes and Lionel Messi. With millions of fans and countless honors, Mahomes—the NFL quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and Messi, a worldwide football legend who now plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, have many admirers. One of them seems, however, to be the highlight in the United States. A recent talk on Fox Sports Radio raised a surprising point—Patrick Mahomes may be more popular than Lionel Messi in America. Even though Lionel Messi is a global icon, some believe Patrick Mahomes holds the spotlight here at home. Patrick Mahomes appears to be more popular than Lionel Messi in the U.S., according to Fox radio hosts Hosting the Covino and Rich Show on Fox Sports Radio on Friday, June 14, 2025, Steve Covino and Rich Davis arrived at an interesting conclusion: Which sports star is bigger in the U. S. ? Patrick Mahomes or Lionel Messi? Steve Covino said he believes Patrick Mahomes is still ahead in terms of fame in America. He explained, 'I'm going Mahomes. It's America's game.'The hosts pointed out that football has a stronger hold in U.S. culture than soccer. Even though Lionel Messi came to support the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVIII in New Orleans earlier this year, Patrick Mahomes still gets more attention. That Super Bowl was one of the most-watched events in the country, but even Lionel Messi's appearance didn't change the fact that NFL players get more media buzz in America. They also shared that even with a slight 2% drop in NFL viewership this season, the league still leads all sports in U.S. television ratings. Lionel Messi's global fame still can't top Patrick Mahomes' American spotlight Rich Davis said on air, 'If you ask 100 kids in middle or high school who they want to visit their school, most would say Mahomes.' He also added, 'Soccer is growing, and the younger generation is starting to care more.' Still, both Steve Covino and Rich Davis agreed that Lionel Messi is much bigger around the world. Steve Covino said, 'Messi owns the rest of the world. No question.' But he ended the talk by saying Patrick Mahomes remains the face of American sports today.
