Sabah's CoBT revenue rose to RM7m in 2024

The Sun06-05-2025
TUARAN: The total revenue from Community-Based Tourism (CoBT) in Sabah rose to RM7 million last year compared to RM6.7 million in 2023, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said the CoBT revenue was from the 18 active districts involved in that growing sector, particularly in rural areas.
'Tourism is the main thrust in the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Roadmap and Kiulu has emerged as one of the key pilot programmes under the CoBT development. I want the CoBT to be actively developed because of its potential in expanding and generating the economy in rural areas in the state,' he said when launching the 2025 Tuaran District-level Kaamatan Festival at Kiulu Community Hall here today.
He also congratulated four CoBT associations in the state, including the Kiulu Tourism Association, which signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) with four universities and a tourism body from Taiwan.
He said the other three CoBTs were the Tambunan Tourism Association, the Sabah Coffee Entrepreneurs Association and the Kampung Tambatuon Kadamaian Women's Community Association, Kota Belud.
He added that the collaboration is expected to provide significant benefits in terms of knowledge transfer and empowerment of the local tourism community.
'The Kiulu district should fully utilise its potential in tourism and agriculture as an economic catalyst because this area is one of the state's CoBT operators,' he said.
Hajiji said that the first-ever Community-Based Tourism Conference, to be held in Kota Kinabalu in June, would be organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Sabah Tourism Board as another strategic move in strengthening Sabah's tourism sector.
He also approved an allocation of RM1.1 for the implementation of several development projects in the Kiulu state constituency.
Hajiji said Sabah recorded 923,709 tourist arrivals in the first quarter of this year, which is about 26 per cent of its targeted 3.5 million visitors this year.
He also expressed confidence in exceeding the stipulated target, just like how the state did in 2024 when it attracted 3.2 million visitors compared to the initial 3 million target.
The Chief Minister also emphasised the importance for rural infrastructure facilities to be upgraded as the basis for supporting the growth of tourism and agriculture.
He added that good infrastructure not only provided comfort to the people of Sabah but also a key attraction to domestic and foreign visitors.
Hajiji urged the people to continue supporting the government's efforts to strengthen the state's development, particularly in the tourism sector which has become the main catalyst for Sabah's economy.
At the Kaamatan Festival launch, Hajiji also declared that the Kiulu Community Hall would be renamed Dewan Masyarakat OKK Rampas.

Hari Sabah being marked in several districts: DCM

Published on: Tuesday, August 19, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 19, 2025 By: Diana Liu Text Size: Jeffrey receiving a souvenir from Madiyem. PITAS: The celebration of Hari Sabah continues to gain momentum since it was officially gazetted three years ago, with growing awareness among communities, especially in rural areas said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Speaking at a press conference in conjunction with the Hari Sabah 2025 district-level celebration held at Tamu Kanibongan, last Sunday, he said the event was first marked in Tambunan before moving to Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu last year, where it was celebrated on a larger scale for the first time. Advertisement The celebration in Pitas saw more than 2,000 people in attendance, where each received a 5kg bag of rice and stood a chance to win lucky draw prizes. Traditional dance performances and karaoke sessions were also held. 'This year, apart from Padang Merdeka, Hari Sabah is also being celebrated in several districts, including Pitas, Keningau, Sandakan, Kota Marudu and Tuaran,' he said. Jeffrey noted that understanding of Sabah's history has improved, reflected in how people now embrace the State flag compared to the past. 'In the early years, when we distributed the Sabah flag, many people did not know what it was. Now, everyone wants one. This shows that awareness is growing, though more still needs to be done,' he said. Also present were Assistant Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation who is also State representative for Pitas Datuk Ruddy Awah, Sabah Padi and Rice Board (LPBS) General Manager Datuk Madiyem Layapan, Assistant District Officer Jasri, and others. Meanwhile, in conjunction with the event, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry through Ko-Nelayan channelled RM169,400 in financial assistance under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) initiative to fishing communities in Kudat, Pitas, Kota Marudu and Banggi Island. Jeffrey said the programme, part of the 12th Malaysia Plan, aims to raise income and socio-economic status of fishermen and fisheries entrepreneurs through schemes such as i-Nelayan for boats and fishing gear, i-Hiliran for downstream product processing, and i-Aquaculture for expanding farming ventures. In total, 19 recipients from the Kudat region benefited under the Income Enhancement Programme, while one participant received aid from the Natural Disaster Welfare Fund. Jeffrey also approved Ruddy's appeal to include Pitas as the seventh district under the LPBS during the event, joining Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Papar, Keningau and Tenom. Ruddy said Pitas has more than 3,000 hectares of suitable paddy land, mainly in Bengkoka, which could boost Sabah's rice output within the next few years. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Textile shops in KL found using unverified measuring tools

KUALA LUMPUR: Several textile shops in the federal capital were found using measuring tools that had not been verified by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), exposing consumers to the risk of fraud when purchasing fabric. KPDN Kuala Lumpur director Mohd Sabri Seman said the unverified rulers used at the premises did not meet the required standards, which could affect consumer rights and create opportunities for fraudulent practices. 'Rulers used for measuring fabric must comply with specifications, including having metal at both ends and a certification label from KPDN,' he told reporters after leading an enforcement operation at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here today. The operation, which began at noon, involved inspection at 35 premises. Seven compounds were issued for various offences under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Weights and Measures Act 1972, amounting to RM7,000 in total. Of these, three premises were found to be using unverified measuring tools, while four others failed to display price tags. Mohd Sabri said that 272 cases involving offences related to price marking and the use of unverified weighing and measuring instruments have been detected since the beginning of this year, with a compound value of almost RM100,000 issued. He advised consumers to remain vigilant and to report any suspected misuse of controlled goods, sale of counterfeit products, or non-compliance by traders with the law. 'We also hope traders will consistently comply with the laws enforced by the agency to ensure that business transactions are carried out fairly and transparently,' he added. – Bernama
