News182 days ago
Jaipur, Jul 29 (PTI) Rajasthan Police will recruit volunteers as Gram Rakshaks (village guards) to assist law enforcement at the village level, a senior official said on Tuesday.
While the position is honorary and unpaid, the Gram Rakshaks will act as auxiliary support to police in their respective villages.
Applicants must be residents of the village, aged between 40 and 55 years, and should have passed class 8.
The initiative aims to strengthen grassroots security and promote community policing as per recruitment rules.
Pankaj Chaudhary, superintendent of police and nodal officer for community policing, said the selected volunteers will serve for a period of two years.
'This is a significant step towards enhancing rural safety and fostering closer police-community relations," Chaudhary said, adding that applications are now being invited from eligible candidates. PTI AG SKY SKY

'No One Should Be Framed Like This': Lt Col Purohit After Acquittal In Malegaon Blast Case

Last Updated: Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit, acquitted in the Malegaon blast case, alleged misuse of power by the Congress-led UPA. Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit, who was among those acquitted in the Malegaon blast case, on Thursday alleged that he was wrongly framed by people who are in power, apparently referring to the Congress-led UPA regime. In an interview with CNN-News18, Purohit said no one should go through an ordeal like his after years of trial. 'When the wrong people are in power, they misuse it. Because of that misuse, entire institutions get tarnished. The institutions themselves are not bad. I am talking about investigating agencies — wrong people were in charge, and they misused their power," he said. Purohit, who was reinstated in the Army pending trial, said the truth has finally come out. 'I am very happy today. No one should have to go through an ordeal like this. No one should be framed like this. This weakens our own country. We are a fantastic nation, a fantastic democracy. Since the very first day, we were saying the same thing. We never changed our stand. I had given the truth in writing on 24th November 2008 — and that is exactly what has come out today," he added. A special court in Mumbai on Thursday acquitted all seven accused, including Purohit and former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, nearly 17 years after a blast in Malegaon town of north Maharashtra claimed six lives. The court noted that there was 'no reliable and cogent evidence" against them. Terrorism has no religion, the court said, adding it cannot convict on mere perception. An explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon town, located about 200 km from Mumbai, on September 29, 2008, killing six people and injuring 101 others. Purohit had allegedly sourced RDX from Jammu and Kashmir and assembled the bomb at his residence, Hindustan Times reported. However, the NIA court said there is no evidence of storing or assembling the explosives in Shrikant Prasad Purohit's residence. 'No sketch of the spot was done by the investigation officer while doing the panchnama. No fingerprint, dump data or anything else was collected for the spot. The samples were contaminated, so the reports can't be conclusive and are not reliable. The bike allegedly involved in the blast did not have a clear chassis number. Prosecution could not prove that it was in Sadhvi Pragya's possession immediately before the blast," the Court said. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Odisha official booked for cruelty towards wife, newborn

Agency: PTI Bhubaneswar, Jul 31 (PTI) An Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer was booked for allegedly subjecting his wife to neglect, torture and mental harassment, police said on Thursday. The OAS officer has been booked under Section 85 (cruelty), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (criminal act by several persons with common intention) of BNS, the police said. Based on a written complaint of the wife, who is an engineer in the state government, the police also booked the OAS officer under the Dowry Prohibition Act. As per the complaint, the woman got married to the officer on February 21 last year, and the couple was blessed with a baby boy on May 7 this year. The officer allegedly abandoned his wife and the newborn at the hospital just four days after the birth of the child, the complaint stated, adding she has been staying at her father's house since then. 'He (husband) was at the hospital for three days after my delivery. However, he abandoned me and my child in the hospital on May 10 without any information. Since then, he has not met me or enquired about the child's health condition," she told reporters near Mahila police station here on Thursday. She further alleged that her husband also did not answer her phone calls and text messages. 'We, both mother and child, were subjected to cruelty. I hope that justice will be provided to us," she said. The woman alleged that her husband abandoned them at the instruction of his mother and sister. 'I have tried several times to resolve the matter, but he did not cooperate," the woman said, adding that she had to take the support of the law to give justice to the newborn baby. The officer concerned, however, refused to comment on the allegations. PTI AAM AAM ACD view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 20:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Zohran Mamdani Walks Back On ‘Defund Police' Remark After Criticism

Mamdani, who was reportedly out of town at the time of the shooting, returned to New York shortly after the Manhattan tragedy. Zohran Mamdani, a leading contender in the New York City mayoral race, is facing renewed scrutiny over past remarks calling to defund the police. The criticism comes in the wake of a deadly mass shooting in Manhattan on Monday, July 28, which claimed the lives of four innocent people. In response to the backlash, Mamdani addressed the media on Wednesday, July 30, distancing himself from his earlier stance and clarifying his current position on public safety and policing. Mamdani, who was reportedly out of town at the time of the shooting, returned to New York shortly after the tragedy. Upon arrival, the Democratic mayoral candidate was immediately confronted with questions about his 2020 statements advocating for cuts to the New York Police Department's (NYPD) budget. 'I am not running to defund the police," Mamdani said during the press conference. 'Over the course of this race, I've been very clear about my view of public safety and the critical role that the police have in creating that public safety." He acknowledged that his earlier comments were made in a moment of intense frustration following the death of George Floyd, admitting that those posts were 'clearly out of step" with his current views. Mamdani also voiced support for the Bangladeshi American Police Association and condemned the killing of Officer Didarul Islam, who was one of the victims of the Manhattan shooting. However, Mamdani's opponent in the mayoral race, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, was sharply critical of the candidate's previous stance. Speaking earlier on the same day, Cuomo labelled Mamdani as 'anti-police" and suggested that he 'doesn't understand the need for public safety." 'He has said the NYPD are racists, the police are a threat to public safety," Cuomo said. 'I think he's dangerous because he doesn't understand the need for public safety in this city." In response, Mamdani accused Cuomo of politicising the Manhattan shooting and claimed the former governor prefers to stay in the past. However, Cuomo continued attacking Mamdani, as he said in his statement to Fox News Digital that his remarks are not about 'politicising the tragedy." 'It is a political discussion that we have to have in this campaign," he added. For reference, Mamdani's controversial statements date back to 2020, when he posted on X, 'We don't need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer and a major threat to public safety. What we need is to #DefundTheNYPD." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
