Rangers mad Aussie darts star reveals Ibrox obsession and the anthem he walks out to
Rangers-mad Brandon Weening was left feeling blue after being frozen-out by Mike De Decker.
But the Australian darts star is hoping a trip across the globe to see an Old Firm game against Celtic could help make up for his loss.
Weening has become a massive supporter of Rangers through a Scots pal and walked into the arena to the tune of Penny Arcade, a well-known song heard at Ibrox.
The Python was choked by the Belgian ace as he lost the first-round game 6-2, but the Geelong star still enjoyed his experience facing one of the PDC elite in his own backyard before he explained the roots of his Rangers affection after the match.
Weening revealed: 'I'm a big gamer. I met a guy from Scotland and we became really good friends. He got me to watch a Rangers game with him once and I just got the Rangers bug. It was back during lockdown. That's how I became a Rangers guy and I'm loving it. I fix my sleep schedule and I'm normally waking up at about 3am to watch them now. It depends on what time they start.
'I would love to watch an Old Firm there regardless of the result. 100 per cent. Obviously, I would want to see Rangers win, but regardless of the result, I would love to go to Ibrox and watch an Old Firm or any match.'
Weening confirmed his walk-on was inspired by the tune ringing out at Ibrox as he added: '100 per cent. I know Roy Orbison did a version of it. I don't like that version. Then I heard the Sammy King version of it and loved it.'
In the end, De Decker managed to get the job done despite suffering from cold hands on the stage in Wollongong. He said: 'It's been fun coming to Australia. It was less fun being on stage because it's a bit colder. I was blowing my hands the whole game. When my hands are cold, I don't have any grip on the darts. so normally my darts stick up to upright and now they were going a bit flat. It just doesn't feel well.
'That's why I was blowing the whole game as well, trying to get them warm, but it wasn't really working. I'll probably wash my hands with really hot water before I have to next go on stage. Maybe that helps. It's not really cold outside. In Australia they call it winter, but it's still 20 degrees. So it's not that it's winter.'
De Decker is delighted to be part of the World Series having turned down an earlier invitation to play in Holland and also being outspoken over his Premier League omission. He admitted some pressure as he said: 'Yeah, a little bit. As well with all the interviews I did after the line-up of the Premier League and declining the one in Holland. I didn't expect getting a call-up for this and for New Zealand, so it was a nice surprise.
'It's nice to get the recognition of what you did as well. If I didn't win the Grand Prix last year, I wouldn't be in these events.'

Margot's involvement would depend on the final version of the script. Meanwhile, Margot is set to produce the Ocean's prequel through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner and will also star in the movie alongside her Barbie cast mate Ryan Gosling. While story details are unknown, it was reported the Ocean's prequel would be set in 1960's Europe and would feature Robbie and Gosling as the parents of Danny (George Clooney) and Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock). Austin Powers filmmaker Jay Roach had initially been attached to direct the movie, but Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung is now helming the project. The big questions that hang over Liverpool's forced ‘rebuild'
The big spender argued he isn't that big a net spender. The manager who added a £100m playmaker, a £69m striker and a pair of new full-backs still isn't sure if his squad is stronger than his Premier League -winning version. Arne Slot succeeded after a summer of inactivity in the market. Now, as Liverpool are setting records in the transfer window, the Dutchman is trying to place his expenditure into context and waiting to see how the class of 2025-26 compare to their immediate predecessors. Is this an upgrade? 'That is something I can only tell you on the first of September, because the window is still three weeks open,' said Slot. And if that contained the possibility of another attacking addition, such as Alexander Isak, Slot insisted that, in both his forward line and the centre of defence, he has ample options if no one else joins. Amid the hyperbole and frenzy of the cultural obsession with transfers, outgoings can be camouflaged by incomings, and Slot noted: 'We've also lost starters that have had a big impact on our title-winning season last year.' That, he feels, is not being talked about enough. Their replacements seem high-calibre players. Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez are the major recruits, while Giorgi Mamardashvili's move from Valencia was agreed last summer. Yet Slot counsels caution. A reason why he has yet to deliver his definitive verdict on whether this squad is better is because of the circumstances. 'I cannot tell you now if these players are able to perform at the same level every three days,' said Slot. 'And I did know that Luis Diaz was able to do that. So, in terms of talent and the quality we've brought in, we see that we have a very good team again. But we have to wait and see; will they stay fit?' Diaz brought in some £65m when he joined Bayern Munich. Include Mamardashvili and various add-ons, and Liverpool's summer spending could already stand at around £300m. Yet when Darwin Nunez's move to Al Hilal goes through, they will have recouped around £190m. They made a profit from trading last summer. 'The net spend of us compared to the other teams is in our favour, if you look at the last two seasons,' said Slot; indeed, Liverpool's net spend is not the biggest this summer. And Slot is thinking about what he has lost as well as what he has gained, and not merely on the pitch. A sensitive man is quick to stress that Diogo Jota 's tragic death affects his wife, children and parents the most. 'I, we, his family, lost him,' he said. Among other things, Jota was a terrific forward and a Slot favourite. Liverpool will continue to mourn him and pay tribute. He leaves a void. 'Then Darwin might be on the verge of leaving,' added Slot. 'Luis Diaz was a definite starter, and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] was a definite starter. So normally in the Premier League, teams only buy, and never sell. We do both. Caoimhin Kelleher and Jarell Quansah played quite a lot of minutes, so that makes four regular starters and two players that played a lot [have left]. 'It's quite normal, if Trent is going to go, that we bring in a full-back. If Luis Diaz is going to go, that we bring in maybe Florian Wirtz, who can play as a [No] 10 and as a left winger. It's quite normal if one attacking option is not there with Diogo, that we bring in Hugo Ekitike. And don't forget that last season we only sold, we didn't buy.' Slot's experience may equip him for a rebuilding job. It was an annual task for him in the past. 'In Holland it's completely normal, because there are levels above Feyenoord or AZ Alkmaar where I worked before,' he explained. 'At a club like Liverpool, there's no level above, so it's not that common that players leave.' Indeed, the previous time a first-team regular left for a sizeable fee was when Fabinho joined Al-Ittihad for £40m in 2023. Then there were signs the Brazilian, like Jordan Henderson, was in decline. Not so with Diaz and Alexander-Arnold. 'We lost players in a good phase of their career,' said Slot. 'I'm used to that, and it sometimes gives new energy as well, because it was one of our strengths that we kept the team the same, because they were very used to each other.' Now there is a different dynamic. Liverpool are spending again, but, casting his eye across the division, Slot said so is everyone else. Many nonetheless expect them to retain their title. 'If we are only favourites because we've spent a bit, I would see that as weird, because we've lost a lot as well,' said Slot. But they have been bolstered by Wirtz and Ekitike, Frimpong and Kerkez. 'It's completely normal that we are one of the favourites, because we won it last season,' accepted Slot. 'And we brought in good players, like all the other ones did, by the way.'

But now that those issues have been largely resolved, there's another piece of work to address: the contract of midfielder Cammy Devlin. The Australian midfielder has been at Tynecastle since 2021, when he moved to the other side of the world from Newcastle Jets. He's experienced a lot in the his four years at Tynecastle, from the highs of finishing third in the Premiership and European nights in Florence to managerial sackings and bottom-six finishes. He is now in the final year of his current deal, but the good news for Hearts and the club's supporters is that he is content to stay. He plays as a No 6 and is tasked with snapping at opponents, winning the ball back and leading the charge. Unsurprisingly, his future came up as he performed media duties ahead of Sunday's next assignment, an away clash at Dundee United. Devlin has always been an honest and engaging interviewee and this time was no different. He brought the aura of player very happy with life right now. 'I feel like everyone's bought in really well,' Devlin said of this new era at Hearts. 'Everyone's been really good, been really at it this pre-season, which we needed because of last season wasn't successful at all. So we really want to change that. All the new boys that are coming and bought into what it means to play for Hearts really well. And yeah, long may it continue.' "Not with me,' was his response to direct contract talks. 'The club spoke to my agent, but nothing's... We've had so many players coming to the club. 'I can't speak on behalf of the club, but that's probably been the club's focus. And I'm sure, like I say, that will take care of itself. If I perform well, then hopefully a positive outcome comes. But at the moment, I'm personally just focusing on playing, hopefully playing every week, playing well. And like I say, I'm sure that will take care of itself.' Devlin is as assertive as a player can be when asked if he is hoping for a positive outcome on his new contract. "Of course,' he smiled. 'Yeah, of course I am. I think everyone kind of knows my personality. I've been sitting in front of you guys for a few years now. You know that I enjoy being here. The city has really welcomed me. I feel like I've made a home in Edinburgh. I met my girlfriend over here and having her family, I've said before, has made everything feel a lot nicer. And yeah, of course I am, but like I say, that's not what I'm thinking of right now because I just want to play good football and then that will take care of itself.' He wants to become front and centre of Hearts' revolution, while on the horizon is the World Cup with Australia. He went to Qatar in 2022 with the Socceroos but since then he has fallen away from the current international picture, not helped by injury and the Jambos' form last season. The Sydney native has always been passionate about Australia, and he is desperate to add to his four caps and impress current boss Tony Popovic. 'I feel like I was in a similar position this time last year in terms of coming off contract and then I signed that extension. So it's a weird one because you've got to perform, you've got to play well and obviously then you've got the extra carrot if there's a World Cup next year. 'And I haven't really been in the Socceroos [squad]. I obviously was injured for a little bit with my concussion and then wasn't selected for the last couple of camps. So that's why I'm always desperate to be involved in that. That's my biggest pride, playing for my country and something that I hold really close to heart. And I get to see my family a bit more often when I'm in the camps! So that's definitely something I want to strive towards. 'But like I say, if I don't work as hard as I can, then none of it's going to happen. So I just go out there every day, train as hard as I can and everything will take care of itself, hopefully.' High praise from McInnes Devlin was heartened by praise from McInnes after the pre-season victory over Sunderland, where the midfielder was part of an-all action, aggressive performance. "I'm absolutely delighted with him," McInnes said a couple of weeks ago. "He's been first class. Even from my first conversation with Cammy when I was on holiday. I've always been an admirer from a distance and now that I'm his manager, I'm really enjoying working with him. I think he gives you a bit of everything.' 'But for me, just keep my head down, work as hard as I can. I feel like I've always prided myself on just working hard and hopefully then that gets me in the team. I feel like we had a positive result against Sunderland, so he said that. But if I then slack off and anyone slacks off, there's so many boys in this team that will just come and take your spot. So I feel like you can't rest.' Hearts have made eight new signings - plus the conversion of Elton Kabangu's loan into a permanent deal - and competition is fierce. Especially in midfield. New boys Oisin McEntee and Tomas Bent Magnusson add to already decent mix of Devlin, Beni Baningime, Calem Nieuwenhof and Blair Spittal. A drop in standards with lead to a dropping of players. 'We've got a massive squad and everyone's hungry to play,' said Devlin. 'I know that if I was the one missing out, I'd be so desperate to just take my teammate's spot in a teammate way, you know what I mean? And that's the way it is.
