Footy legend holds back the tears as he issues huge request to team-mates as he makes big career decision

Daily Maila day ago
Retiring veteran Michael Walters reckons Fremantle can win the AFL flag as early as this year and he's made his teammates promise to let him be part of the premiership celebrations.
Walters fought back tears on Thursday when he fronted the player group to inform them of his retirement, effective immediately, due to an ongoing knee injury.
It brings an end to a glittering 239-game AFL career that featured 365 goals and countless highlights.
The 34-year-old underwent knee surgery during the summer, made it back to appear for the Indigenous All Stars and a Dockers pre-season match, before being sidelined again.
Walters made his comeback on limited minutes via the WAFL last month, but the writing was on the wall when he pulled up sore from that match and was unable to back it up.
'I have been working my backside off to try and get back to play some form of footy and while mentally I am still committed, unfortunately my body wouldn't allow me to continue playing,' Walters said.
'I never left a stone unturned, I tried to return and play again at the top level and it just didn't work out.'
Fremantle (10-5) sit just half a game adrift of second spot, putting them in a strong position to challenge for this year's flag.
'I reckon they can go all the way if they stay in the moment,' Walters told the media on Thursday afternoon.
'This group is a mature group, they've got the right coaching staff and everyone around them, with the right leaders.'
Earlier in the day, Walters let his emotions flow as he addressed his teammates - and he used the moment to ask them for one final favour.
'It's been a hard year for myself personally,' a tearful Walters said.
'But you guys made it so much easier. I'm going to miss the coffee yarns, just the hanging out and FaceTime calls.
'I've been around the game a long time, and I'm going to miss that the most - hanging out with you guys each and every day.
'I want you guys to promise me one thing. When you do win that premiership, let me drink a can of Jacks (Jack Daniel's) out of that cup.'
With Walters' future now determined, more attention will turn to fellow veteran Nat Fyfe.
Fyfe, who also underwent knee surgery over the summer, missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury.
The 33-year-old made a successful comeback last month, but he will now miss the next two to four weeks after injuring his calf while warming up as the sub during last week's 12-point win over St Kilda.
Walters, selected with pick No.53 in the 2008 national draft, won Fremantle's goalkicking award across five separate seasons and will go down as one of the club's best ever forwards.

McGregor was back with his team-mates to lead Brendan Rodgers' latest premiership title masterplan. The match won't Live Forever in the minds of anyone who was here. But some might say McGregor cast no shadow against the Championship side in this first friendly win of preseason. Okay, okay, that's quite enough of the Oasis puns. This was serious stuff for Rodgers and Co as they kicked off their preparations for the new season with an easy victory. Striker Johnny Kenny's first-half strike was the only goal off the game with Sean Crighton's men grafting hard all night. But it was as comfortable as it could have got for the Premiership's defending champions. The Celts boss was still without his international players for this friendly. The likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Alistair Johnston, Liam Scales, Kieran Tierney, Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah have all yet to report back from their summer break. Cameron Carter-Vickers, James Forrest and Jota are still out injured. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up There was also no Nicolas Kuhn at Lesser, with the German winger on the verge of completing a £17million move to Serie A outfit Como. Ironically, that deal could see him play AGAINST Celtic in just a few weeks when Rodgers takes his squad to Italy for more a pre-season action. There will be a bounce game in Cork early next week and then a training camp in Portugal before that. And it's fair to assume the players are probably looking forward to some warm-weather sessions. Because July in Scotland right now could be mistaken for November given the wind and rain that was swirling around Glasgow.. Both teams almost stood shivering as they paid tribute to Lisbon Lion, John Clark, with a minute of applause before kick-off for the club legend whose funeral service had been held earlier in the day. In all fairness, by the time the game got going, the 898 fans who managed to get tickets were given a decent amount of attacking football to watch. It largely went in the one direction. Queen's keeper Calum Ferie - who would have been a hero to the Celts supporters with his man of the match display against Rangers in last season's Scottish Cup shock - didn't exactly have countless saves to make in the first-half by any stretch of the imagination. And he maybe felt a little gutted that he conceded after 20 minutes given how hard his defenders in front of him were working. 4 But Celtic were still well worth their half-time lead given how much possession they had. Johnny Kenny got the goal and it was a terrific finish from the young Irishman who continues to look the part in a hoops shirt. His sweeping finish high into the roof of the net gave Ferie no chance. At the other end, Ross Doohan was making his Celtic debut and he only had one real stop to make - from a shot from Jamie Bradley - which he did comfortably. The ex-Aberdeen goalkeeper was the only away player who stayed on for the second-half. Rodgers took all of his outfield men off at half-time and gave ten kids the opportunity to catch his eye. Stephen Welsh took the skipper's armband from McGregor. With so many teenagers out on the park it was a chance for Queen's to compete more. But the eager rookies continued to dominate the ball with Kyle Ure, Conor Daly, Sean McArdle and Ben Summers the ones to watch. They all oozed class and confidence on and off the ball as they were clearly determined to impress their gaffer. Striker Samuel Isiguzo should have made it 2-0 in the closing stages but his shot lacked power to beat Ferie. After the miss, he could have been forgiven for turning to cigarettes and alcohol. Sorry. Killie beat Ayr in McKenzie's testimonial, despite his penalty miss

Kilmarnock defeated rivals Ayr United in Rory McKenzie's testimonial match, despite the midfielder missing a penalty. Stuart Kettlewell's side were awarded a spot-kick on the cusp of half-time and McKenzie - who was being recognised for 14 years of service at Rugby Park - stepped up to take it, but saw his effort saved by Ayr's goalkeeper, David didn't take long though for the Premiership side to take the lead, with summer signing Greg Kiltie firing Killie ahead one minute into the second departed the field on the hour mark to a sea of applause and adulation from the home crowd.

Jordan Thompson storms into fourth round of Wimbledon for first time

Jordan Thompson's adventures in Wimbledon wonderland have continued with the wounded warrior storming into the fourth round of his favourite event for the first time in his career. Still troubled by a debilitating back injury that had him protesting after his two previous courageous five-set wins that even 'snails move faster', Thompson looked in much sharper nick as he had too much grass-court nous for Italian Luciano Darderi in their third-round clash on Friday, prevailing 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-3. It booked the battling Thompson his first last-16 appearance at Wimbledon at the ninth attempt and only the second fourth-round date of his grand slam career, matching his US Open performance of last year and 2020. He is the first Australian to reach the fourth round at the grass-court slam this year, with both Alex de Minaur and Daria Kasatkina having the chance to join him when they play on Saturday. In the amphitheatre of Court 18, the 31-year-old also managed to bypass the sort of nerve-shredding drama of his previous two matches, which he had won in five-set slogs, this time nipping Darderi's attempted comeback in the bud after the Italian had taken the third set. That raised the prospect that marathon man Thompson might be dragged into a seventh career five-setter at Wimbledon – he's won five and lost just one – only for him to reassert his quality against the 23-year-old Darderi whose two wins at Wimbledon this year doubled his career tally of grass-court victories. Thompson will be relieved to have won in seven minutes under three hours to avoid any more pressure on his back, especially with a daunting last-16 outing awaiting against in-form fifth seed Taylor Fritz, who defeated Spain's 26th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1. Earlier, Rinky Hijikata's daydream of pulling off the greatest of Wimbledon escapes against American big-hitter Ben Shelton lasted less than a minute when the pair resumed their match after it had been controversially suspended on Thursday evening. Hijikata had got the unexpected chance to live to fight another day after saving three match points and then being reprieved by a controversial postponement of play on Thursday night amid farcical scenes as darkness descended. But when the match resumed on No.2 Court in the Friday afternoon sunshine with No.10 seed Shelton serving for the match, everyone could see the funny side once he won all four points in just 55 seconds, including three booming aces, to complete the straightforward 6-2 7-5 6-3 victory in two hours 12 minutes. Sydneysider Hijikata, who had been unable to dent the two-time grand semi-finalist's delivery all match, grinned ruefully as any chance of him becoming the fourth Australian to qualify for the third round alongside Alex de Minaur, Jordan Thompson and Daria Kasatkina was blasted away. Hijikata, who had in the last game on Thursday saved three match points to extend the match, paid tribute to Shelton. 'Last night's experience was bizarre ... but that was probably an absolute clinic on how to serve out a match if you've got one game to go,' said Hijikata. 'Yeah, credit to him. It's not easy to come out and serve out a match when you have a bit of pressure and you've had the night off. I thought it was bloody good effort by him.'
