The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says public access around the Soo Locks will be limited for Engineers Day on June 27.
Access will be limited to the Canal Park "out of an abundance of caution, in light of uncontrollable circumstances," according to a news release. Officials say access in and around active Soo Locks operations will not be open to the public during the event. They say the decision was made in conjunction with local, state and federal public safety partners.
As part of the limitations, the U.S. Coast Guard will be participating but will not hold an open house.
"We acknowledge this is disappointing and acknowledge the importance of this event to the community, which is why we coordinated closely with our public safety partners to permit the event to still take place," said Soo Locks operations manager LeighAnn Ryckeghem in a statement. "All public activities and displays will be concentrated within Canal Park which includes the observation platform to view vessels and the visitor center."
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with the event's federal, state, and local public safety partners are changing public access for this year's Engineers Day event on Wednesday, June 27, 2025. Out of an abundance of caution, in light of uncontrollable circumstances and in order to prioritize public safety, visitor access will be limited to Canal Park. Access in and around active Soo Locks operations will not be allowed.

The event is in partnership with the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It honors the engineers who built the Soo Locks and the people who maintain them.
People can visit the Canal Park for Engineer Day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on June 27. After the event, the viewing platform will be open until 10 p.m. The Soo Locks Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"We are continuing the requirement for all bags coming into the Soo Locks to be clear," said Jason Wojnaroski, Soo Project Office assistant operations manager, in a statement. "Clear bags will allow park security to quickly inspect bags and assist with making this a fun and safe event for everyone."

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana will serve a three-game suspension, reduced from four, for an altercation with a fan during a game at the Detroit Tigers on June 19. The suspension went into immediate effect, beginning Sunday with the finale of a three-game home series against the New York Mets. Santana will also sit against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday and Tuesday before being eligible to return in the finale of that series Wednesday. Santana, in the second game of a June 19 doubleheader, was seen in videos posted on social media pointing out the fan to a police officer before jumping and swinging at the person who was in the front row above Pittsburgh's bullpen at Comerica Park. After jumping at the fan, Santana was escorted away by Pirates bullpen personnel and held back by a teammate. Santana later got the first out of the ninth inning before a rain delay stopped what became an 8-4 Pirates win in 10 innings. 'You guys know me and I'm a calm-demeanor type of person,' Santana said after that game through an interpreter. 'I've never had any issues with any of the teams that I've played for and I guess the guy crossed the line a few times. I would not like to go into it.' Santana, a 29-year-old right-hander, is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA and five saves in 36 games this season. He has allowed one hit in 4 2/3 innings across four appearances since the day of the incident. Man killed in North Sacramento shooting
A man was killed in a North Sacramento shooting early Sunday morning, Sacramento Police said. The shooting happened around 4 a.m. near Mahogany Street and North Avenue. Police said officers arrived at the scene and found a man who had been shot at least once. Officers and first responders gave the victim first aid, but he died at the scene, police said. Police are investigating the shooting and said they do not have any information about the shooter yet.

Pistons' Malik Beasley focus of federal gambling investigation
Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is the subject gambling investigation by the U.S. District Attorney's office, according to reports. In a statement, the Pistons confirmed the investigation but declined to comment further. "We are aware there is an investigation and have no other information," Pistons Chief Communications Officer Kevin Grigg told CBS News in a statement. "Defer any further comment to the NBA." NBA spokesman Mike Bass told CBS News in a statement: "We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors' investigation." ESPN's Shams Charania was the first to report on the investigation. The allegations made against Beasley stem from the player betting on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023-24 season when he was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks, according to Charania. "There have been no charges against Malik," Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, told the Associated Press. "It's just an investigation at this point. We hope people reserve judgment until he's charged — or if he's charged. It's not uncommon for there to be a federal investigation." The Pistons signed Beasley in July 2024 after he spent one season with the Bucks. The 28-year-old is set to become a free agent on June 30 if a new deal with the team is not reached. Beasley averaged 16.3 points per game during the 2024-25 season, hitting 319 3-pointers to rank second in the NBA behind Anthony Edwards' 320. Beasley became one of just three players in NBA history to eclipse 300 3-pointers while shooting 40% or better from long range. The Georgia native and Florida State product was taken as the No. 19 overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 2016 NBA draft. Beasley has also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz.
