Sindh leading Independence Day celebrations: Sindh CM

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, speaking at the 'Maarka-e-Haq' concert at the National Stadium, recalled the events of May when, according to him, India attacked Pakistan.
'Our soldiers responded in such a way that India was forced to plead before the world,' he said. 'Had we wanted, we could have continued the war and taught them a harsher lesson, but as a peace-loving nation, we accepted the global call for a ceasefire.'
The chief minister said this was why the atmosphere at the event was charged with extra zeal and enthusiasm. 'Sindh is the province that played a leading role in the creation of Pakistan, and today it is also leading Independence Day celebrations,' he remarked.
He announced that renowned singers Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam, and Sajjad Ali would be performing to entertain the audience.
Shah credited his entire cabinet and the Arts Council of Pakistan for making the concert possible, saying the event could not have been organized without their dedicated efforts.

Indian PM Modi vows to protect farmers, pushes self-reliance amid Trump tariff tensions

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the country on Friday to move towards more self-reliance, manufacture everything from fertilisers to jet engines and EV batteries, and vowed to protect farmers in the face of a trade conflict with Washington. Modi was addressing the nation on the occasion of its Independence Day at a time New Delhi has been struggling with US President Donald Trump's punishing tariffs imposed on Indian goods and the collapse of trade talks, largely due to differences over imports of American farm and dairy products. 'Farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers are our top priorities,' Modi said in his customary annual address from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi. 'Modi will stand like a wall against any policy that threatens their interests. India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of our farmers,' he said. Modi did not mention the tariffs or the US in his speech that lasted nearly two hours. Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil in a move that sharply escalated tensions between the two nations. The new import tax will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50% - among the highest levied on any US trading partner. India's Modi vows no compromise on farmers interests amid Trump's tariff salvo Modi has never spoken about the tariffs directly, only alluding to them in a speech last week, where he swore to protect the interests of farmers, even if it came at a personal price. The tariffs threaten to disrupt India's access to its largest export market, where shipments totalled nearly $87 billion in 2024, hitting sectors like textiles, footwear, gems and jewelry. Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. US probe into Adani behind Modi's inability to stand up to Trump: Rahul On Thursday, the Indian foreign ministry said that it hoped relations with the United States would move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests, seeking to temper worries that ties were headed downhill.

Shaza announces Pakistan's digital transformation roadmap

ISLAMABAD: On Pakistan's 78th Independence Day, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced a digital transformation roadmap under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Digital Nation Pakistan vision, pledging to turn the country into a self-reliant, technology-driven economy. The minister, addressing a high-profile ceremony of leaders from government, industry, startups, and academia, paid tribute to Marka-e-Haq — Pakistan's victory over India in May — calling it a historic moment that demonstrated national courage, professionalism, and technological capability. She lauded the Armed Forces, particularly COAS Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their leadership, dedication, and sacrifices in steering both the nation's defence and its technological advancement. Highlighting Pakistan's global recognition, Khawaja noted that the country achieved Tier-1 'Role Modelling' status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index and climbed 14 ranks in the UN E-Government Development Index to enter the High EGDI category for the first time. She celebrated progress in digital inclusion, revealing that as per the 2025 GSMA Gender Gap Report, the mobile internet gender gap had reduced from 38 per cent to 25 per cent, with eight million women coming online in FY 2024-25. Women's mobile internet usage nearly doubled from 10 per cent to 19 per cent, meeting the personal target she set upon assuming office. Khawaja outlined the future roadmap under Digital Nation Pakistan, focusing on youth empowerment, improved governance, industry facilitation, and building a robust Digital Public Infrastructure. Key initiatives include: National AI Policy 2025 to promote ethical AI innovation and economic growth; National Fiberisation Initiative to expand high-speed internet access nationwide; IMT Spectrum Auction to ensure 5G readiness, attract foreign investment, and boost telecom growth; Satellite Internet Services for universal connectivity; Uninterrupted Internet Policy for IT Companies to ensure reliable, high-quality connections for IT exports; DigiSkills 3.0 to train over 3.3 million IT professionals in three years, including 300,000 via Huawei and 200,000 via Google. She linked the spirit of independence to digital sovereignty, stating that true freedom in the modern era means self-reliance in technology, innovation, and governance. Concluding, she vowed: 'With Marka-e-Haq, Pakistan proved it cannot be ignored. On this 14th August, we commit to using technology to build an equitable and prosperous Pakistan within our lifetime.' Businessmen pledge to expedite economic uplift

Industrialists have vowed to work with the government on fast-tracking economic development and achieving prosperity in the long term as the country's macroeconomic indicators are already showing positive trends. Celebrating Pakistan's Independence Day, they noted that diplomatic and trade ties with major countries were also improving while global think tanks were giving encouraging signals about the economic outlook. In a statement, SITE Superhighway Association of Industry President Masood Pervaiz said that the industrial and business community was optimistic about economic recovery and growth in the coming years on the back of improving trade ties with the US and China. "On the Independence Day, we express our solidarity with the country's leadership and vow to cooperate with the government on socio-economic development of the country," he remarked. Pervaiz voiced hope that the government would address concerns of the industrialists and business community to improve business climate and investor confidence through favourable policies and a fearless environment for doing business. Speaking on the occasion, Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry President Sheikh Muhammad Tehseen extended support to the government, saying that businesspersons were ready to uplift Pakistan's image and contribute to economic prosperity. He urged the government to work on reducing the cost of production and improving the ease of doing business for local and foreign companies to stimulate investment and enhance exports. Tehseen stressed that higher utility costs should be curtailed and interest rate should be slashed to single digits, which would encourage domestic and multinational companies to continue to run their businesses and make investments in Pakistan. He added that business-friendly policies, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), would help the government create employment opportunities and reduce poverty. Convener of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry's Standing Committee on IT Khushnood Aftab emphasised that the government should promote made-in-Pakistan products and services in both domestic and international markets. "The policy of localisation will not only slash the import bill, but will also help the country become self-reliant and acquire technology in different fields," he said.
