19-year-old on Monday by becoming the first Indian to clinch the FIDE Women's World Cup. She defeated the legendary Konery Humpy in the tie-breaker of an all-India final in Batumi, Georgia. With the win, Divya has become the youngest ever winner of the FIDE Women's World Cup.
Additionally, she has also become qualified to be bestowed with the eminent Grandmaster tag. She will be the 88th Grandmaster from India, and only the 4th Indian woman GM.

Since Humpy is twice the age of Divya, the contest between them was tagged as the battle of the generations. As the classical games ended in a stalemate, the odds were tilted towards the veteran Grandmaster, as she is the reigning World Rapid Chess champion. But, much like the entire tournament, Deshmukh overcame the odds and was crowned as the new champion.

Lucknow: More than 300 scholars, writers and students attended an international discourse titled 'Understanding language and gender through theatre and cinema', at Karamat Husain Muslim Girls' PG College on Thursday. The event was organised by college manager Syed Naved Ahmad and principal Prof Huma Khwaja. Prof Khwaja highlighted the importance of examining cultural productions through the lens of gender and language. Key speakers included Prof Afroz Taj and Prof John Caldwell, both from the University of North Carolina, USA. Prof Taj said, "Any language spoken in any part of the world cannot be said to be pure, as every language is inclusive of various regional, foreign and other languages. As in the subcontinent, the Urdu language totally evolved in the pre-Independence of India. Restricting it to a community cannot be justified as it was a language widely included in Indian culture and tradition. " Prof Caldwell, a linguist and polyglot, drew connections between linguistic structures and social hierarchies. Writer and publisher Atif Haneef also addressed the gathering. Bathinda: Palpreet Singh Brar, a towering 6'10'' athlete from Doda village in Punjab's Bathinda district, has been named captain of the Indian basketball team, joining a distinguished group of Punjabi athletes who have recently captained national squads. The list includes Shubman Gill from Fazilka (Indian Test cricket team), Harmanpreet Kaur from Moga (India women's national cricket team) and Harmanpreet Singh from Amritsar (India hockey team). Gurpreet Singh Sandhu from Chamkaur Sahib was the captain of India's national football team until the recent past. He was first named captain in a friendly match against Puerto Rico in Sept 2016. Palpreet Singh, 31, was the second Indian, after Satnam Singh Bhamra, to be drafted into the NBA Development League (NBA D-League). He was picked by the Long Island Nets on Oct 31, 2016, at the age of 21.
