Safe space for women to open in Scarborough to provide vital support
The Women's Centre will officially open later this month, providing a women-only environment for those in Scarborough and nearby coastal areas.
It aims to support women with multiple unmet needs, those who have experienced trauma, and those at risk of involvement with the criminal justice system.
Jo Coles, deputy mayor for policing, fire and crime, said: "The Mayor and I are determined to tackle the levels of violence against women and girls in our region and to deliver safe places for all.
"This new Women's Centre will deliver a step change in the support available to women in Scarborough and the surrounding area."
Modelled on the successful York Women's Centre, the new facility will offer one-to-one and group support in a holistic, trauma-informed setting.
It will also provide practical amenities including a kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities.

Reform MP suspends himself from party over allegations around his business affairs
Reform MP James McMurdock has suspended himself from the party. In a statement, chief whip Lee Anderson said it is over allegations around his business affairs published in a national newspaper. The statement said at around 1pm: "I have today received a call from James McMurdock who has advised me, as Chief Whip, that he has removed the party whip from himself pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations that are likely to be published by a national newspaper. "The allegations relate to business propriety during the pandemic and before he became an MP. "At Reform UK we take these matters very seriously and James has agreed to cooperate in full with any investigation. "We will not be commenting further at this moment." Mr McMurdock joined Reform UK in 2024 after having worked in the banking sector. In last year's general election, he was elected as the MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock. He beat Labour into second place, winning by 98 votes, taking the seat from the Conservatives. It marks the latest incident of a Reform MP having the party whip removed - Rupert Lowe was suspended in March over alleged threats of physical violence towards the party's then chairman Zia Yusuf. The allegations were then referred to the Metropolitan Police, who later said Mr Lowe would not be charged. The MP for Great Yarmouth has always denied wrongdoing and claimed he was the victim of a witch hunt after speaking out against party leader Nigel Farage in the media. Arrests made at protest in support of banned Palestine Action
Arrests have been made at a protest in London being held in support of Palestine Action after a ban on the group came into force on Saturday, police said. The Metropolitan Police posted on X on Saturday afternoon saying officers are responding to the protest in Parliament Square and making arrests. Palestine Action lost a late-night Court of Appeal challenge on Friday which sought to stop the protest group being banned, less than two hours before the new legislation came into force at midnight. Warning after e-bike battery causes house fire
An accidental house fire in Nottingham that saw one man rescued and eight others led to safety was caused by the failure of an e-bike battery. Three people suffered minor injuries in the blaze in Burford Road, in the Forest Fields area of the city, at about 04:20 BST on Wednesday. The flames and smoke destroyed the front room and window of the three-storey property. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the outcome of the fire could have been "catastrophic". The lithium-ion battery that caused the fire had been bought second-hand online and was left charging overnight, the fire service said. Amy Goulden, head of community safety and engagement at the fire service, said: "Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are on the rise, and as a service we are attending more of them. "This incident is just another example of how dangerous these types of fires can be. "Thankfully, the incident was resolved quickly, and we are relieved to hear the injuries of those involved are minor, however the effects could have been catastrophic." While investigating, the fire service said it found the internal doors of the property were shut, giving the residents and emergency service personnel extra time. "Although the charger was the one which had come with the bike, it may not have been through rigorous safety checks needed to sell these products new on the High Street," Ms Goulden added. In May, campaigning charity Electrical Safety First said fires caused by substandard e-scooter and e-bike batteries were "tearing through homes", and called for stricter sales rules to be introduced to reduce the risks.
