A ten-foot corn statue set to go in downtown Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — After a much-needed refurbishment, which included a complete rebuild in places, a familiar statue is set to return to downtown Bloomington.
The McLean County Museum of History will unveil a refurbished corn statue that was first introduced 25 years ago.
The 10-foot-tall corn statue is being placed in downtown Bloomington and will be unveiled at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2, according to the museum.
The sculpture, which is made of wood, stainless steel, fiberglass, hemp, canvas, and acrylic paint, had to be restored and parts completely rebuilt after being displayed outside for more than two decades, they said.
It was originally created as part of Bloomington's sesquicentennial — or 150th anniversary — and was created by Herb Eaton, who will beat the ceremony, they said.
The sculpture is part of the city's Sculpture on the Square initiative, in which the city looks to bring more sculptures to the area in the future, said the Museum Executive Director Julie Emig.
'This new public art initiative is an interdisciplinary approach to storytelling and place-making,' Emig said. 'We're excited to preserve and share this piece of history with our community and look forward to bringing more locally significant sculptures to the square in the future.'
Thanks to a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, the museum was able to make the much-needed repairs, it said.

WMBD Children programming rescheduled due to power outage

Red, White and BOOM! less than a month away
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Every Fourth of July, there are traditions such as cook-outs, hanging out with family and if you in the Peoria area, there's a really big fireworks show on the riverfront. The Chose Greater Peoria Red, White and BOOM! looks to once again draw in hundreds of thousands of people, to prove once again they are the 'best fireworks show in Illinois.' Every year, both sides of the Illinois River are lined with spectators. Some people stake out their prime watching spot early in the day and camp out. Others watch from as far away as Glen Oak Park. According to state Rep. Jehan Gordan-Booth, the event is perfect for people of all ages. 'Whether you have a six-month-old or an 89-year-old parent or grandparent,' she said. While 'Red, White, & BOOM!' sees large turnout, there's virtually no trace left Friday Organizers are planning on having a great turnout, as they are partnering with other community groups in Peoria such as the Peoria Fire Department, Peoria Police Department and more to ensure safety. Gordon-Booth said the event outdoes itself year after year. 'I think every year they find a way to make it a little bit better,' she said. Food and free music are set to fill the air at a Peoria park
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Peoria Municipal Band and Mac Daddy Spuds are set to hit Glen Oak Park Sunday evening. The band will be at Glen Oak Park, located at 2218 North Prospect Road, for a free concert starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 8, said a post on the city of Peoria's Facebook page. 'Yeehaw it is the Wild West! Ed Hammond is our special guest emcee, and Jennifer Rosa is back to sing for you,' the band's website said.
