Nissan Rogue's Japanese Twin Gets the Nismo Treatment
For Nissan, the Rogue is one of the brand's most important global models. In the United States, it remains a core part of the lineup, offering family-friendly practicality and cross-country capability in a compact SUV package. The model recently received its 2026 update, sharpening its tech and refining its trim walk, but one powertrain option still hasn't crossed the Pacific: Nissan's e-Power hybrid setup. Meanwhile, in Japan, where the same model is sold as the X-Trail, the brand has gone a step further by unveiling the first-ever Nismo variant. It carries the visual aggression and chassis attention you would expect from Nissan's performance division, though a glaring omission might make you think twice about its appeal: additional power. The X-Trail Nismo has been developed under the idea of a grand touring SUV, combining sportier driving manners with everyday usability. Its chassis receives extensive rework, most notably with Kayaba Swing Valve shock absorbers, a first for Nissan, designed to keep the tall SUV composed without sacrificing comfort. Steering has been optimized to suit the new suspension and tire setup, while the e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system – also found in the Nissan Ariya Nismo – has been retuned for a more rear-biased power delivery and improved cornering precision. Complementing this is a specially tuned vehicle control module, with a SPORT mode aimed at responsiveness and an AUTO mode intended for smoother mid- to high-range acceleration. Power still comes from the familiar e-Power configuration: a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine working with dual electric motors, for a combined system that emphasizes traction and efficiency rather than raw performance. Visual cues ensure the X-Trail Nismo stands apart from standard trims. Red-accented spoilers and a diffuser-style rear bumper give it more aerodynamic presence, while functional touches like a low-mounted fog lamp and wider 20-inch Enkei wheels – fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires – add performance credibility. Nissan claims the changes reduce lift by 29% compared to the base SUV. Inside, the cabin adopts the usual Nismo treatment of black trim with red stitching and accents, joined by a red starter button. Fabric and leatherette seats are standard, though Nismo-branded Recaro sports seats are available for those who want additional support during hard driving. For now, the X-Trail Nismo is limited to Japan, with sales starting in late September. The model will make an interesting rival to the new Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, but whether Nissan will consider a US launch is still unknown at this point. Given the Rogue's significance in North America, a Nismo version could expand its appeal to those who want a sporty family vehicle. For now, however, it remains another Japan-only special that American buyers will be watching from afar. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
