From Paris to philanthropy: K-pop stars Seventeen's youth mission grows, with RM1.1m gift to Unesco
SEOUL, Aug 13 — K-pop boy band Seventeen has donated US$250,000 (RM1.1 million) to Unesco to mark International Youth Day, continuing their ongoing support for global youth initiatives. Pledis Entertainment said the funds came from proceeds of the 'JOOPITER Presents: sacai x SEVENTEEN' charity auction, which featured items inspired by the group's collaboration with Japanese fashion label Sacai, South Korean entertainment news portal Soompi reported today. 'Since our debut, we have grown by capturing the diverse moments of youth through music that reflects our sincere experiences and emotions, making the meaning of International Youth Day especially significant to us,' the group was quoted as saying in a statement. 'We send our support to all young people around the world who are still pursuing their dreams.' The 13-member act, known for hits like Hot and Super, debuted in 2015 under Pledis Entertainment and has become one of South Korea's top-selling boy bands, praised for self-producing much of their music and choreography. Seventeen's partnership with Unesco began in 2023 when they became the first K-pop act invited to speak and perform at the 13th Unesco Youth Forum in Paris. The members' speech and performance at the headquarters highlighted the importance of creativity, solidarity and youth empowerment. In 2024, they were appointed Unesco's first Goodwill Ambassadors for Youth, donating US$1 million to fund programmes aimed at nurturing creativity among young people globally. The latest contribution underscores the group's continued focus on youth empowerment, a cause they have frequently championed in both their music and public engagements. International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12, was designated by the United Nations to highlight issues affecting young people and promote their participation in decision-making.

Copycat controversy: New Japanese girl group to change name, logo after Everglow uproar
SEOUL, Aug 13 — A Japanese entertainment agency has apologised and promised a change to its new girl group's name and logo after drawing criticism for being too similar to K-pop act Everglow's. Online allegations surfaced on August 10, pointing out that the rookie Japanese group, also called everglow in lowercase, shared not only the same name but also a similar logo design with the South Korean group. 'We sincerely apologise for the discomfort and inconvenience caused by the name and logo design used by our group,' the agency Sova and the group's producer Soichi Yoshimura said in an official statement carried today on South Korean entertainment news portal Soompi. Yoshimura said the name 'everglow' was something he had personally used for over a decade. He added that the logo's 'infinity' motif for the 'ever' portion unintentionally resembled another design, stressing there was never any intention to copy. He admitted the controversy was due to 'insufficient prior research and lack of consideration' for the existing K-pop group and its fans. Sova said it had 'immediately ceased using the problematic name and logo' and was working on replacements, pledging to rebuild trust with supporters. Everglow, a six-girl Korean group managed by Yuehua Entertainment, debuted in 2019 and is known for hits like Dun Dun and Pirate.

Southern Taiwan shuts down with evacuations and flight cancellations as Typhoon Podul approaches
TAIPEI, Aug 13 — A large swathe of southern and eastern Taiwan shut down on Wednesday and hundreds of flights were cancelled ahead of the arrival later in the day of Typhoon Podul, with thousands of people evacuated. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons, generally along its mountainous, sparsely populated east coast facing the Pacific. The mid-strength Typhoon Podul, packing wind gusts as strong as 191 kph, was heading for the southeastern city of Taitung as it intensifies and was expected to make landfall nearby on Wednesday afternoon, weather officials said. 'Destructive winds from typhoon expected. Take shelter as soon as possible,' read a text message alert issued to cellphone users in parts of Taitung early on Wednesday. The alert warned people of gusts above 150 kph in the coming hours. Nine cities and counties announced the suspension of work and school for Wednesday, including the southern metropolises of Kaohsiung and Tainan. In the capital Taipei, home to Taiwan's financial markets, there was no impact. Authorities are also working to evacuate those whose homes were damaged by a July typhoon that brought record winds and damaged the electricity grid in a rare direct hit to Taiwan's west coast. The government said almost 5,000 people had been evacuated ahead of the typhoon's arrival. All domestic flights were cancelled on Wednesday, while Taiwan's two main international carriers China Airlines and EVA Air cancelled a handful of international flights as well. After making landfall, the storm is expected to hit Taiwan's much more densely populated western coast before heading for China's southern province of Fujian later this week. As much as 600mm of rain was forecast in southern mountainous areas over the next few days, the Central Weather Administration said. More than a year's rainfall fell in a single week this month in some southern areas, unleashing widespread landslides and flooding, with four deaths. — Reuters
