Malaysia to conduct agriculture census every 10 years
He said the move will help strengthen the agricultural sector's data infrastructure.
"With the 2024 Agriculture Census, we now have comprehensive and up-to-date baseline data for the sector, something that hasn't been done in over two decades.
"This data provides a crucial foundation for evidence-based policymaking, enabling more accurate, inclusive and effective planning, as well as implementation and monitoring," he said in his speech at the launch of the 2024 Agriculture Census Interim Report today.
Also present were Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup and Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
The last time Malaysia conducted an Agriculture Census was in 2005.
Fadillah said short-term agriculture surveys would also be carried out periodically starting next year to improve data availability and support continuous sector monitoring.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Agriculture Census — conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia from July 7 to Oct 10 last year — covered households and business organisations involved in agricultural activities.
It included food crops and commodities, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture, as well as logging and forestry.
Fadillah said what was presented in the report was not merely data, but a symbol of the commitment and dedication of all parties involved.
Touching on the findings of the 2024 Agriculture Census, Fadillah, who is also the energy transition and water transformation minister, said 458,395 individuals (45.4 per cent) of agricultural operators are aged 60 and above, while 326,287 (32.3 per cent) are between the ages of 46 and 59.
Meanwhile, 224,147 agricultural operators (22.2 per cent) are aged between 15 and 45.
"There is a need to rejuvenate the agriculture sector by attracting the participation of the younger generation in this field.
"Without a skilled and competitive workforce among the youth, the goal of strengthening national food security and reducing reliance on imports will be difficult to achieve," he said.
Fadillah urged all parties, including policymakers and researchers, to leverage the statistics to chart directions and interventions in the agriculture sector, especially in addressing national food security issues.
At the event, the Agriculture Products Price Dashboard (MyAgroPrice) was also launched.
It is another key initiative for the digitisation of the country's agricultural statistics.
The dashboard displays average prices for 60 selected agricultural products across three key stages of the supply chain — farm, wholesale, and retail levels — by state, over a monthly time series from 2020 to 2024.
MyAgroPrice adds value for farmers by providing accurate and accessible price information, helping them to better plan marketing strategies and reduce the price information gap among industry players.
The dashboard plays an important role for policymakers to monitor price stability, identify market trends, and design more targeted interventions for the well-being of the people and the nation's food security.

KUALA LUMPUR: Energy and water are key sectors in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) development agenda. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the government prioritises energy security, environmental sustainability, and affordable supply for all. "Advancing the nation and ensuring the wellbeing of our people can no longer be achieved without focusing on the energy and water sectors. This means ensuring energy security and environmental sustainability, while also making supply accessible and affordable for all, including the rakyat. "This is why numerous initiatives were announced earlier, particularly new approaches in the energy market using more innovative mechanisms," he said at a press conference after the tabling of the 13MP by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister said the government has also amended the Energy Commission Act 2001 to introduce the concept of energy export, which includes managing energy resources, the potential export of renewable energy, the introduction of new tariffs, and a time-of-use mechanism to encourage the rakyat to consume energy more prudently and efficiently. "Ultimately, the goal is to transition towards more sustainable energy use to safeguard our environment," he said. Fadillah added another significant development is the introduction of new technologies, including nuclear energy, which the government is currently studying in-depth to assess its viability for Malaysia. "This is to ensure that we have access to clean and firm energy sources. "At present, our renewable energy sources are primarily solar-based, but we require a more stable and cleaner energy supply. Nuclear energy is one of the options we are seriously considering," he said. He added that in terms of water management, beyond ensuring supply security, one of the major risks that must be addressed is flooding. "Several flood mitigation projects were announced today for states including Johor, Perak, Pahang, Sarawak, and Sabah. "I would like to express my appreciation. Our ministry will focus on ensuring the timely implementation of these announced projects so we can mitigate the risks posed by increasingly extreme weather conditions," he said. He also expressed his gratitude for the considerable focus on Sabah and Sarawak, particularly for major infrastructure projects such as the Pan Borneo Highway and the Trans-Borneo Highway. "This will significantly enhance connectivity and improve basic public infrastructure in both Sarawak and Sabah," he said.

Home minister: 13MP allocates RM51b to strengthen security as pillar of Malaysia's stability and progress
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The allocation of RM51 billion to the security sector under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) proves the government's commitment to making security the main pillar of the country's stability and progress, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the large fund would drive various important initiatives including the modernisation of security operations and improving the welfare of frontline personnel. 'With the allocation of RM51 billion to the security sector, this is a clear signal that the government recognises security as a pillar of the country's stability and progress,' he said in a statement today. He also expressed appreciation for the government's serious emphasis on the welfare of security personnel, including the provision of quarters for them, involving more than 82,000 units in various phases of construction and renovation. 'The provision of 1,368 new Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) quarters and 3,088 Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) quarters has been completed, plus another 8,501 units are being built and 69,141 existing quarters are being renovated, which is a meaningful step in safeguarding the well-being of personnel and their families,' he said. He said the ongoing efforts in the 13MP to improve infrastructure, facilities and support for security personnel are very welcome and deserve to be praised because they pave the way for the excellent performance of the personnel. 'We cannot expect our security forces to serve efficiently and dedicatedly if their basic needs such as comfortable housing, a conducive environment and social need are neglected,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry also welcomed the government's efforts to modernise the country's immigration system through the National Integrated Immigration System and the use of advanced technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) which is deemed timely in facing current security challenges. Cabinet backs 13MP blueprint, hails focus on jobs, rural uplift
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Cabinet ministers today expressed support for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described it as a timely and comprehensive blueprint to address Malaysia's current economic challenges. 'I am particularly drawn to the second policy focus of the 13MP, which emphasises economic empowerment through value creation driven by digitalisation and advanced technologies such as AI. 'This approach includes promoting high growth, high value industries and strategic sectors to ensure that the nation's economic growth is not only sustainable but also inclusive and fair,' he said in a press conference at Parliament's lobby here. He highlighted the plan's strong focus on rural development, Bumiputera empowerment and disaster preparedness. Zahid also praised initiatives to strengthen TVET and digitalisation, which he said would drive inclusive, high-value growth. He said the plan covers all key dimensions, from economic sustainability and environmental stewardship to good governance and public wellbeing. Fahmi highlighted the plan's core aim to 'raise the ceiling, raise the floor, and strengthen the pillars' in reference to boosting national income, improving people's livelihoods and reinforcing governance. He said over 40 key policies and more than 85 laws are embedded in the plan's framework. 'We're raising the ceiling. We want to raise the floor as well. But it's the pillars, our governance and the reforms we bring, that will make all this possible,' he said.
