Hannah Yeoh wins defamation suit, Kamarul Zaman ordered to pay RM400,000 in damages
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has ordered Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) senior lecturer Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff to pay RM400,000 in damages to Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh in a defamation suit over the former's Facebook posting in 2017.
Justice Aliza Sulaiman made the ruling in favour of Yeoh after finding that the politician had proven her case on a balance of probabilities.
The defamation suit, filed in 2022, arose from two Facebook posts made by Kamarul Zaman from May 10 to May 17, 2017, in which he alleged that Hannah had a proselytising agenda and was using her political platform to advance Christianity.
He also cited her autobiography, Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey, as evidence of her purported Christian agenda, further alleging that she sought to turn Malaysia into a Christian nation.
In his statement of defence, Kamarul Zaman denied that the posts were defamatory and asserted that his statements were justified.

TANGKAK: A 58-year-old retiree lost about RM108,000 of her savings after receiving a call from scammers impersonating as officers from government agencies. Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the woman was contacted by individuals claiming to be from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the police. 'The suspects accused her of being involved in suspicious investment and loan activities, and she started to panic. 'The suspects manipulated the victim into believing she was being audited. Out of fear, she followed the instructions given, including transferring money into an account supposedly for audit purposes,' he said here yesterday. The victim ended up making 16 transactions from her account to two bank accounts, believed to be mule accounts. 'She only realised she had been cheated after suffering losses totalling RM108,520. She lodged a police report on Sunday,' said Supt Roslan. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Supt Roslan warned the public not to fall for phone scams, particularly those involving callers posing as enforcement officers or government servants. 'We advise the public to verify suspicious calls before taking any action. Be cautious and always get the latest updates on scams through official platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department,' he said. Supt Roslan urged anyone who believes they have been scammed to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 for early intervention to block fund transfers.

Three MPs seek to join proceedings involving Anwar as observers
KUALA LUMPUR: Three members of parliament have applied to the High Court for permission to join proceedings involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's bid to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court. The questions include whether Anwar has immunity from a civil suit filed against him four years ago by his former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. Anwar, who is the Tambun member of Parliament, filed to have the questions referred to the Federal Court and to postpone the main trial until the apex court delivers a decision. The High Court is scheduled to hear this application tomorrow before Judge Roz Mawar Rozain. The three applicants, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut), Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (PN-Kemaman, and Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), submitted their request via e-filing yesterday to be allowed to attend the hearing as observing counsel. Their application, filed under Order 92(4) of the Rules of Court 2012, Article 128(2) of the Federal Constitution, and Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, argues that they have a vested interest in the matter as members of parliament. According to legal firm Wan Jawahir & Takiyuddin, acting for the trio, the legal questions raised, particularly Articles 39, 40, 43, and 128(2) of the Federal Constitution, are of public importance and may influence parliamentary debates and public discourse. "Given the significance of these constitutional matters, we believe these MPs deserve access to the proceedings in an official capacity as observers to better inform their roles and responsibilities in Parliament," the firm said in its application. They also requested the court to allow Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, and Datuk Seri Zulkifli Noordin to attend as observing counsel representing the three parliamentarians throughout the proceedings. Yusoff's lawyer, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, confirmed receiving a copy of the application and said it may be presented to the court during tomorrow's session.

Tengku Zafrul's exit from UMNO no rift or tension
LONDON: The decision by the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz to quit UMNO has not disrupted or raised tension within the party, according to Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the UMNO President, stated that most grassroots members view Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party as appropriate given his lack of loyalty to UMNO. 'I don't see any indication of 'temperature rising' within UMNO. It's better for him to leave if there is no loyalty to the party. Don't disturb him because he is currently performing the Hajj, hopefully, peace will surround his mind,' he said. He made these remarks during a press conference after chairing a pre-meeting with the Malaysian delegation in conjunction with his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom, which began today. Last Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced via a Facebook post that he had submitted his resignation from UMNO to join PKR. Meanwhile, addressing the question of a cabinet reshuffle if Tengku Zafrul's position as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry needs to be replaced, Ahmad Zahid said discussions on the matter should be held internally within the Unity Government. 'The absolute right to appoint ministers rests with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), and in this matter, it is better for us to hold internal discussions to avoid various interpretations,' he said.
