R500m hostel project half done but poor safety and overcrowding persist

At Jeppe Hostel, tenant Celamandla Majola said the upgrades had improved his living conditions but not his sense of safety.
'Our living conditions are now better but there is no safety. At night we hear gunshots, especially in summer,' said Majola. Having moved in five years ago after being told he could stay without paying rent, he now lives with four others in a unit with fixed windows, painted walls, tiles and running taps.
Another tenant, Khayalethu Mhlongo, said the changes have brightened the space. 'It used to be dark and scary but now the painting brings life. I can even do video calls to my siblings because it feels better,' he said.
He hopes future upgrades will include beds and kitchen stoves.
Residents say overcrowding remains a daily struggle. In one unit, six people live together with a makeshift shop operating inside the small space.
'It is a bit cleaner now but too many of us share one room. The shop helps me survive but this is not how a person should live,' said shop owner Thabo Khumalo.
The department aims to complete all refurbishments on the six hostels by May 2026 with monthly monitoring visits planned to keep work on track.

Father charged with attempted murder after 'assaulting' daughter, 4

The man was arrested on Wednesday after police responded to a complaint about a father allegedly physically abusing his child in Eldorado Park. 'On arrival at the scene, they were pointed to a backyard shack that was closed. On entering, police found a man with a little boy and a little girl,' said Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo. He said they noticed the girl sleeping in the bed had head injuries, bruises and a swollen eye. The man, who introduced himself as the father of the children, could not give a clear explanation about what happened to the girl. 'Police arrested the father and rushed the girl to a medical care centre for treatment. The father was later charged with attempted murder and child abuse,' Masondo said. He said further investigation by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit led to the arrest of the mother of the victim, who was charged with defeating the ends of justice. Four killed in New Brighton shooting spree

Four people were killed in separate shooting incidents in New Brighton on Thursday night. In the first incident, which occurred at about 7pm in Nikiwe Street, three people were shot dead. According to police reports, two unidentified men had entered the premises and opened fire in the back yard. Two men and one woman, between the ages of 37 and 41, were rushed to hospital in a private vehicle. However, they were declared dead on arrival due to their multiple gunshot wounds. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said in the second incident, in Tshiwula Street, a 52-year-old man was shot dead while seated in his vehicle. 'Preliminary reports indicate that two unknown men approached the victim and fired multiple shots, striking him in the upper chest. 'The victim was declared dead at the scene.' Gantana said the police were appealing to anyone with information about the shootings to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Callers may remain anonymous. 'The SAPS assures the community that all necessary resources are being deployed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. 'Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,' Gantana said. The Herald

Gauteng pulls security guards from high-risk schools

The Gauteng education department has withdrawn security guards from high-risk schools across the province with immediate effect. A notice sent by the department to school principals and security service providers did not explain the reasons for the withdrawal, but stated that no guarding services would be allowed to operate without official purchase order numbers. The notice, dated August 6, and seen by the Sowetan, was issued by Zondi Nkuna, acting director of security services management. This development comes just a week after the principal of Thuto-Lesedi Secondary School in Vosloorus had to be temporarily removed by the department after a brutal bullying incident that left a grade 8 pupil hospitalised with serious facial injuries on July 23. The incident triggered protests by other schools in the area, demanding accountability from the school management and accusing them of being powerless against bullying. Earlier this month, a pupil from a school in Mamelodi, Tshwane, was fatally stabbed by another pupil at the school after a heated altercation. The Gauteng education department had previously identified at least 75 schools as 'extreme high-risk' zones, spanning Johannesburg Central, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni. In response to rising incidents of school violence, the department launched a series of school safety imbizos to gather input from communities and stakeholders. These engagements produced recommendations such as the installation of CCTV cameras, structured after-school activities, and the deployment of trained patrollers instead of outsourced private security. Questions were sent to the education department on Thursday afternoon, but the spokesperson had not responded by the time this article was published. SowetanLIVE
