Assam: BSF thwart infiltration attempt along Indo-Bangladesh border
An altercation over the deportation of illegal migrants allegedly increased tensions between personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam's South Salmara Mankachar district on Tuesday morning.
The incident took place near the Thakuranbari area after over a dozen migrants had illegally entered the Indian territory in the wee hours of the day. When the BSF reportedly tried to send them back, the BGB intervened at the zero-line.
During a heated argument that reportedly followed, the BGB personnel allegedly crossed the zero-line area towards the Indian side. Senior officials are said to have intervened to control the situation.
In a statement later in the day, the BSF said they successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt by 'a large group of Bangladeshi nationals' in South Salmara Mankachar.
The officials said around 3:30am, the BSF noticed a group of Bangladeshi nationals approaching the International Border with the intention of crossing into Indian territory.
'Acting swiftly, BSF troops challenged them to prevent their unauthorized entry into Indian territory. The Bangladeshi mob subsequently retreated back into Bangladesh,' the BSF said in the statement.
However, the officials refused to comment on the alleged confrontation with their Bangladeshi counterparts. HT reached out to a senior officer, who said, 'We have already issued a statement about what happened.'
According to locals in Thakuranbari, the aforementioned illegal migrants are stranded in a no-man's land between the two countries, adding that the BSF fired rubber bullets in the air to control the situation.
The Assam Police last week launched a statewide crackdown on illegal Bangladeshis staying in the state and more than 150 suspected infiltrators have been detained so far.
The police on Sunday detained 22 suspected Bangladeshis from Numaligarh area of Golaghat district and, according to officials, they were working in different industries in the locality.
Several of them were detained from Guwahati, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Cachar and other areas between Sunday and Monday.
Several organisations, including the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), have welcomed this move by the Assam Government.
AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said a large number of illegal Bangladeshis who are staying in Assam need to be pushed back.
However, opposition parties, including the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), have criticised the state government for 'harassing original Indians' in the name of crackdowns.

Gujarat Congress leader arrested for alleged ‘morale-breaking' posts about Operation Sindoor
Gujarat Congress leader Rajesh Soni was arrested on Friday for posting allegedly misleading and 'morale-breaking' content about Operation Sindoor on social media, PTI reported. Soni was booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to acts endangering India's sovereignty, unity and integrity, and statements conducing to public mischief, PTI quoted Superintendent of Police (CID-Cyber Crime) Bharatsinh Tank as saying. The first information report in the matter was filed based on a complaint by a sub-inspector in Gandhinagar's cybercrime cell. Soni had shared videos and images on Facebook relating to Operation Sindoor, the Rafale deal and other sensitive matters, The New Indian Express quoted the complaint as having alleged. It also alleged that Soni's social media posts were meant to undermine the morale of the Indian Army, cast doubt on its duties, erode public trust in the armed forces and raise alarm about national security. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed in the shelling. The sides on May 10 reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following the four-day conflict. The complainant alleged that the posts 'dampen the Indian Army's enthusiasm, sow doubt about their duty and diminish' public trust. It further alleged: 'Despite clear knowledge that the government has not surrendered and that these claims were false, the accused knowingly spread rumours that incite hatred, tarnish India's image internationally, and lower the Army's morale.' Congress criticises arrest The Congress criticised the arrest of Soni. Shaktisinh Gohil, the Gujarat Congress chief, said that Soni's had not made any comments against the military or the country. Soni had only remarked that 'our brave Army men should get the credit for the bravery they have shown and the money from the government treasury should not be used for publicity, and political mileage should not be taken' in the name of Operation Sindoor, Gohil said on social media. 'Seeing the way the government is doing publicity, they [citizens] have expressed concern that the soldiers will not get the credit,' Gohil said. 'If they only raise their voice for the Army or express their concern that they will not get the credit, how can it be a crime?'

New Delhi: Ex-Pakistan Cop Mastermind Of Cross-Border Spy Ring, Says Arrested YouTuber A former sub-inspector from the Pakistan Police ranks was among the masterminds of a cross-border espionage racket, which various Indians have been found to be a part of. Punjab YouTuber Jasbir Singh, who was arrested earlier this week for allegedly spying for Pakistan, disclosed during interrogation that the former cop Nasir Dhillon had introduced him to Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) officials in Lahore. He had also arranged Jasbir Singh's meeting with ISI operative Danish in Pakistan. Nasir Dhillon, who is now a YouTuber, used to connect Indian social media personalities with ISI operative Danish alias Ehsan-ur-Rehman, who worked as a visa officer in the Pakistani embassy in Delhi. Danish was expelled from India in May, after travel vlogger Jyoti Malhotra was exposed for spying for the country with whom ties have plummeted since the April 22 Pahalgam attack and May 7 Operation Sindoor strikes. Both Jasbir Singh and Nasir Dhillon know Jyoti Malhotra, who runs the travel YouTube account 'Travel With Jo', and was among the first of spies in the alleged Islamabad-run espionage ring to be arrested. Further, police have found that Danish used to call the spies as guests to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi and assign tasks. Security agencies also suspect that hundreds of former police personnel of Pakistan Police are part of the espionage racket, which targets Indian YouTubers. Jasbir Singh, who runs a YouTube channel named 'JaanMahal video' and has over a million subscribers, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly passing on information on Indian forces' movement to the ISI. He was allegedly in contact with an ISI officer named Shakir, alias Jutt Randhawa, who was part of a terror-backed spying network, said Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. He had visited Pakistan thrice, and several Pakistani numbers were found on his devices, which are now under forensic probe. He had also attended the Pakistan National Day program held at the Pakistani Embassy in Delhi on Danish's invitation. After Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, Jasbir Singh tried to erase the traces of his communications with Pakistani officials to avoid detection, said DGP Yadav. Others facing spying charges include a student from Patiala's Khalsa College, Davendra Singh Dhillon. The 25-year-old was arrested in Haryana after he uploaded photos of a pistol on Facebook, and his Pakistan links emerged during his questioning. Nauman Ilahi, a 24-year-old security guard in Haryana, was found to be in touch with an ISI handler in Pakistan, and used to receive money in the account of his brother-in-law. A 28-year-old health worker from Gujarat Sahdev Singh Gohil was arrested for transmitting sensitive information related to Indian military infrastructure to a Pakistani operative. Arman, 23, and Tarif, both from Haryana's Nuh district, were arrested within days of each other. Tarif was caught trying to delete chats with Pakistani numbers when police arrived at his residence. Shakur Khan, a Rajasthan government employee from Jaisalmer, was also arrested on spying charges.
