Egyptian thriller ‘The Settlement' set for screening in Italy

Broadcast Pro22-07-2025
The social thriller is Mohamed Rashad's first narrative feature, following his 2016 documentary 'Little Eagles'.
Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Rashad's The Settlement will screen at the Middle East Now in Florence on July 23, following its international premiere at the Berlinale. This marks the film's third screening in Italy, underscoring its rising recognition and critical acclaim, according to MAD Films.
Directed, written and produced by Rashad, The Settlement is an exploration of class, labour and survival. The film follows the story of two brothers, Hossam and Maro, who are forced to take jobs at a factory after their father dies in a workplace accident. The job is offered as compensation for their loss, but the situation is complicated by the presence of the man responsible for their father's death, who continues to work at the same facility. As Hossam struggles to adapt to the harsh factory environment and gain the trust of his father's former colleagues, Maro, only 12 years old, sacrifices his education to join his brother on the factory floor, introducing the theme of child labor into the narrative.
Praised for its emotional depth and authenticity, the film has drawn attention for the performances of non-professional actors Adham Shoukry and Ziad Islam, who portray the two brothers. Their bond anchors the film's examination of loss, resilience and the complex dynamics of workplace power.
The Settlement is produced by Hala Lotfy of Hassala Films in Cairo, with co-production support from partners in France, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The film's upcoming screening is hosted by Middle East Now, a cultural festival organised by the Florence-based non-profit MAP OF CREATION. The association focuses on cinema and documentary filmmaking as a means of exploring contemporary social, political, and cultural issues, particularly in the Middle East, and aims to foster dialogue and integration through visual storytelling.
During its development, The Settlement garnered support from numerous international funding bodies, including the Berlinale World Cinema Fund, IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund Script and Development Initiative, Hubert Bals Plus Co-Production Minority Support, Doha Film Institute, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Red Sea Development Fund, Fonds Image De La Francophonie, and El Gouna Film Festival's CineGouna Platform.
The film's worldwide sales are managed by MAD World, with MAD Distribution handling its release in the Arab world.

Samsung, DDB Egypt feature Man City's Marmoush, rapper Wegz in latest campaign

For the latest Samsung campaign titled 'Samsung Galaxy A Series… How Smart?!' rolled out in July 2025, DDB Egypt has brought together two icons from the footballing and music industries to highlight the various forms of 'intelligence' – both in and out of the spotlight – and how 'smart' gets even smarter when powered by the Galaxy A Series. Manchester City's Egyptian footballer Omar Marmoush and top-charting rapper and trap artist Wegz add a touch of 'smart' stardom to the Samsung campaign, proving that being smart goes beyond one definition, whether on stage, on the pitch or in life. The campaign, which is now live across digital and social platforms, was brought to life by DDB Egypt, in partnership with production agencies Good People and Ruffmercy, post-production agency Barbershop, as well as Snap Arts, The Garage Studios and the Wegz team. At the heart of the campaign is an exclusive track by Wegz that emphasises how to stand out through the power of smart choices. Footballer Marmoush and rapper Wegz are seen using the Samsung Galaxy Series A, showcasing how Samsung, Wegz, and Marmoush are smart in different ways but even smarter together thanks to the Series A's standout AI-powered tools. 'Our goal was to highlight the intelligence built into the Galaxy A Series through real, relatable talent,' said DDB Egypt's Associate Creative Director, Gihad Mansour. 'Marmoush and Wegz each bring their own form of intelligence, and the Galaxy A Series brings it all together,' Mansour added. The campaign intended to redefine what it means to be 'smart,' showing that intelligence has many forms, including emotional, athletic, creative, technological and more. It aims to demonstrate that no matter what type of intelligence people have, Samsung's AI tools are here to support it. 'People are smart in different ways, hence every individual looks for tools that help them shine in their chosen path. Our goal was to show how Samsung brings all of that together,' Gihad added. 'That insight led to the campaign's Arabic tagline: 'Shoft el zaka2?' [Did you see the smartness?]' From intelligent photo editing to smart suggestions and productivity features, the Galaxy A Series is highlighted as the phone for every kind of smart. Dubai Culture Adds Vibrant New Murals to Al Quoz Creative Zone

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has introduced two vibrant murals in the Al Quoz Creative Zone as part of the ongoing Dubai Public Art Strategy, transforming the district into an evolving open-air art gallery and reinforcing Dubai's role as a global hub for creativity and culture. The murals are the work of three female artists who captured the spirit and diversity of Al Quoz. Egyptian artist Rabab Tantawy's mural Vibrant Voices of Al Quoz , painted on the façade of Aramtec, showcases traditional regional elements like spice stalls, coffee pots, arches, and domes, celebrating the area's cultural richness. Meanwhile, Emirati artist Hend Al Murid and Syrian muralist Dina Saadi collaborated on Wonder Windows , a whimsical piece on the front of children's museum WooHoo, incorporating symbols like the Hudhud bird, Emirati motifs, and playful elements tied to childhood imagination. Shaima Rashid Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design & Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, said the initiative supports the growth of Dubai's creative community and offers public spaces that reflect the UAE's heritage and innovation. Mozah Lootah, Project Manager for the Dubai Public Art Strategy, noted that these murals contribute to tourism while enabling local artists to express their vision and spark dialogue with the community.
