ICC mourns Bob Simpson's death, remembers his contributions
Simpson, one of the most influential figures in Australian cricket, died on Saturday at the age of 89.
In a statement, ICC chairman Jay Shah praised Simpson's contributions and said he would be long remembered.
"Bob Simpson was one of the true greats of our sport, and it is deeply saddening to learn of his passing. His legacy is immense. As a player, captain, and later as a coach, he shaped Australian cricket and inspired the global game," Shah said in the statement.
"He nurtured and guided a generation of players who went on to become legends in their own right, and his influence extended far beyond the field.
"On behalf of the International Cricket Council, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricket fraternity. His passing is a profound loss for the game, but his contributions will always be remembered and cherished," he added.
An ICC Hall of Famer, Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia between 1957 and 1978, scoring 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81 with 10 centuries, 27 half-centuries and a highest score of 311.
A fine leg-spinner, he took 71 wickets at 42.26 with two five-wicket hauls and best figures of five for 57. He was also an astute fielder, taking 110 catches.
After retiring in 1968, Simpson made a famous comeback as Test captain in 1978 at the age of 41, to lead a weakened Australia side.
After retirement, he became Australia's first full-time coach and was also a national selector.
He finished with 10 Test centuries, scoring all of them while he was leading the Australian team, including 311 against England in Manchester in 1964.

'Greg Chappell caused insecurity in the team': Irfan Pathan reveals untold story of Chappell era
Irfan Pathan and Greg Chappell (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has opened up on Greg Chappell 's controversial stint as Team India 's head coach, offering a balanced view of the Australian's methods. Pathan admitted that he personally benefited under Chappell, but also highlighted how the coach's aggressive approach clashed with Indian cricketing culture, eventually contributing to a turbulent phase that included Sourav Ganguly's removal as captain and India's early exit from the 2007 ODI World Cup. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pathan recalled how Chappell's style created insecurity within the squad. "He had his way of treating seniors and juniors with the same respect. But in that, he would be a bit more aggressive than one would like. He would tell anyone that if they don't perform, they will be dropped. I realised it was too aggressive, and once I talked to him privately about it," Pathan said on The Lallantop. "I told him that we already know what you keep saying about being dropped. You don't need to tell us. It is causing insecurity in the team. He looked at me for a while, got a bit upset and threw some choicest of words, but then he realised I was right," he added. Pathan stressed that Chappell's failure was not in intent but in cultural adaptation. "If I go to Bangladesh or Sri Lanka or England as a coach, and if I don't accept their culture, would their players accept me? Greg Chappell's intention was right, but he wanted to bring an Australian culture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors are going crazy for these comfy, stylish, easy-on shoes Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo He wanted us to play hard cricket and didn't care what background anyone came from. But you can certainly do it in a much better way." Sharing his own county cricket experience, Pathan underlined why blending into a team's environment is crucial. "I played for Middlesex County club. You play a four-day match, then you drive the next day. They gather everyone in a bar before the match. I don't drink, but I need to accept their culture. You are a part of the team, and you need to blend in. If Chappell hadn't missed that one thing, he would've been one of the best coaches," he concluded. Shubman Gill likely to miss, Yashasvi to get nod in India's Asia Cup squad: Report
India's Test captain Shubman Gill is reportedly set to miss out on selection for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 squad, despite a strong batting performance in the recent Test series against England. According to a report by the Indian Express, the team management and selectors believe that Gill does not currently fit into their T20 plans, making his participation in the tournament Asia Cup 2025, which will be held in the UAE, is scheduled to begin on 9 September and will follow the T20 format. India are set to open their campaign against the UAE on 10 September. The selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to announce the squad in Mumbai on Tuesday, 19 Jaiswal is reportedly favoured to take the role of the third opener. Jaiswal, who was part of India's victorious 2024 T20 World Cup squad but did not feature in any matches, is set to retain his place. Although there were informal discussions about dropping Jaiswal in favour of Gill, the suggestion appears to have been dismissed. Gill last represented India in a T20 International during the Sri Lanka series in July last year. He enjoyed a successful IPL 2025 season with the Gujarat Titans, bolstering his case as an opener. Nevertheless, the management are keen to maintain the established opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have performed well at the top of the is a reluctance to disturb this settled combination. According to the report, there were also discussions about potentially dropping Tilak Varma to accommodate Gill, but this was ruled out as unfair given Varma's impressive status as the No. 2 ranked left-handed batsman in the ICC T20I batting rankings. Additionally, the team does not want Gill to be sidelined without opportunities to recent Test series success in England, where a young Indian side earned a 2-2 draw, is unlikely to influence the Asia Cup selections significantly, as the formats differ substantially.A BCCI source told the Indian Express: "If Gill is included, he will bat at the top straight away. If he doesn't get a game, then there is no point in having him. At the same time, it would be unfair on Sanju, who has performed well. If Gill comes in, Sanju might miss out, and Jitesh Sharma could get a game."Jitesh Sharma is expected to be the second wicketkeeper-batsman in the squad alongside Samson. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack after confirming his availability for the tournament. Mohammed Siraj, despite finishing as the highest wicket-taker in the Test series against England, may struggle to secure a place in the Asia Cup squad. Arshdeep Singh is a near-certainty, while Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana are contenders for the third pacer's all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to feature as the fourth pacer. The spin attack is expected to include Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy as frontline spinners, with Axar Patel selected as the first-choice spin all-rounder.- EndsTune InYou May Also Like
