'That wasn't pretty at all' - Brian Flanagan frank on nature of Kildare win

RTÉ News22-06-2025
Kildare manager Brian Flanagan was happy to admit that his side had to resort to winning ugly in their Tailteann Cup semi-final against Fermanagh, but securing a berth in the final was no small feat for a county with a dire record at Croke Park.
The Lilywhites recorded just their fourth win in 24 games at HQ as Fermanagh were dispatched on a 1-13 to 0-09 scoreline.
A couple of downpours and slippery underfoot conditions conspired to produce an instantly forgettable affair, although Brian McLoughlin's scoring prowess off the bench was a joy to behold.
"That wasn't pretty at all," Flanagan freely admitted in his post-match interview with RTÉ Sport. "I don't think the highlights reel will take too long on TV! Probably a hard watch for people, but from our point of view a semi-final is there to be won.
"There's obviously a little bit of history on the negative side with Kildare coming to Croker in the last few years and not winning.
"Winning was everything today and moving on for three weeks' time and knowing that we won't get away with a performance like that.
"But it was enough to win today. It won't be enough in three weeks, but we are delighted to win."
"We didn't play well, we were poor on the day, but we found a way to win," Kildare manager Brian Flanagan's candidly admits after overcoming Fermanagh in the semi-finals of the Tailteann Cup pic.twitter.com/FaE1TbQUYF

Kildare's general profligacy in front of the posts is a weakness Flanagan must address before the decider against Limerick, with the manager of the view that nerves got the better of many of his forwards.
"Maybe nerves and anxiety got in on a few lads, in terms of pulling the trigger today," he opined. "We did look a little bit apprehensive for a lot of the game.
"Obviously Brian McLoughlin comes in and he seemed to kick with a bit of freedom and brought us into the game and brought other lads out of their shell a small bit.
"James's goal at the end then just gave us that breathing space, but we didn't really open up until probably the last five to 10 minutes, very tight up to that.
"Conditions to be fair, there were a couple of really, really heavy downpours throughout the game and that didn't help but I'm not making excuses.
"We didn't play well, we were poor on the day but we found a way to win in the last five or 10 minutes and we move on from it."
McLoughlin only entered the fray for Ryan Sinkey in the 44th minute, but finished the match with a personal haul of five points, with his unerring accuracy earning him the man of the match award.
"I suppose I was probably a little bit disappointed not to get much game time last week and I put my shoulder to the wheel during the week, just hoping to get called upon at some stage and luckily a few of the shots went over," the sharpshooter said afterwards.
"When we lost to Louth, we were obviously very disappointed but Flanno and the lads said we really needed to drive on in this Tailteann Cup and it will be an opportunity to play Sam Maguire next year so it's another step in the right direction and we'll look forward to three weeks' time."
Echoing his manager's sentiments that the result rather than performance was paramount, he added: "A lot of things didn't go our way in the first half and I think our kick-outs were a little bit disappointing and we missed a lot.

'Absolute disgrace' as wrong two-point calls made in dying minutes of GAA final

There was a massive controversy at the conclusion of a county senior league final on Sunday, as a couple of late misjudged two-pointers determined the result. Fermanagh powerhouses Derrygonnelly Harps were up against 2024 county champions Erne Gaels in the division one league final at Brewster Park. The match was closely contested throughout, but Erne Gaels seemed to have the upper hand when they held a 0-12 to 0-8 lead with just 15 minutes left on the clock. Derrygonnelly managed to score a couple of two-pointers from outside the new scoring arc to narrow the gap, yet Erne Gaels still led by two with less than four minutes remaining. Then came the moments of controversy that ultimately decided the outcome. With just over three minutes left to play, Derrygonnelly's Jarlath Flanagan scored a point when the scoreboard read Derrygonnelly 0-13 Erne Gaels 0-15. The score was well within the two-point arc but was mistakenly given as a two-point score, thus tying the game. In the final stages, as both teams fought desperately for a win, Derrygonnelly found themselves on the attack once more. With only two minutes of normal time left in the county final, towering midfielder Stephen McGullion gained possession in the left corner of the attack. The former Fermanagh county player was closer to the two-point arc than the previous Harps score but was still within range and lofted over another point. Once more, much to Erne Gaels' dismay, it was awarded as a two point score and that left the tally reading 0-17 to 0-15 to Derrygonnelly. That was how it concluded in the end, and it left Derrygonnelly as Fermanagh Division One champions. Stephen McGullion's brother Shane, an established county player himself, was captain and raised the trophy in the middle of the John Vesey stand for the Harps. With the Fermanagh Championship just around the corner, it remains to be seen if Erne Gaels have the appetite for or the right to an appeal or a replay. They are managed by Donegal 1992 All-Ireland winning hero Declan Bonner. Seamus Ryder was part of the Erne Gaels team today, as well as being a recent manager of the side, and he said in response to video of the phantom two-pointers online: "Apparently lines hard to see. Camera 60 yards away had no issue." One social media fan commented: "That's wild. With clear video evidence a reply should be called. "Without a doubt it should be, it's a absolute disgrace," said another.

Fermanagh player stars in AFLW debut for Melbourne Demons

IRISH DEBUTANT Bláithín Bogue starred for Melbourne Demons in their 30-point AFLW (Australian Football League Women's) win over Geelong. The fourth international player on North Melbourne's list, Bogue signed following their 2023 campaign. She previously represented Fermanagh and Tempo Maguires in GAA, winning the player-of-the-match award in the 2022 All-Ireland Junior Ladies' final. Advertisement The 25-year-old, who is one of a record 39 Irish players involved in the AFLW this year, didn't feature in her first season as the club were crowned champions. But after impressing in pre-season, she made the most of her opportunity today, kicking a soccer-style goal amid heavy rain in the final quarter at Kardinia Park, as the Kangaroos avoided a major scare against their rivals. Bogue also produced the assist for Bella Eddey's goal to give her side an 18-point advantage. The Tempo, Fermanagh native, then put the outcome beyond any doubt, taking a mark in the goal square before registering a kick from close range. 'It was great. The first three quarters were tough, but we knew we just had to keep fighting until the end,' Bogue told Fox Sports afterwards. 'I honestly was just in the right place at the right time (for the goals). 'The first one, the ball was just there and I just had to put the boot on it, because they put so much pressure on you if you try to bend down for the ball. I was just happy I got it away.'
