Mets Announce Trade With Giants After Rockies Game
Mets Announce Trade With Giants After Rockies Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets enter Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies with a 40-24 record that sits atop of the National League East standings. New York is one of just three teams in MLB with at least 40 wins this season, joining the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. Advertisement Losing in the National League Championship Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, New York reinforced its roster over the winter, most notably signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract. While Soto and New York's talented offense grabbed most of the headlines this offseason, it has been the Mets' pitching staff that has led the way thus far. New York Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner© Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images Coming into the weekend, New York ranks first in team ERA with a 2.84 mark. This has been despite several injuries to key pitchers. Further bolstering this group, the Mets announced a trade with the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Sending out cash considerations to San Francisco, the Mets received right-handed pitcher Justin Garza in return. Garza has two separate stints in MLB. Making his debut in 2021 with Cleveland, the former eighth round pick out of Cal State Fullerton pitched 28.2 innings to a 4.71 ERA. Not making it back to the big leagues until 2023 with the Boston Red Sox, Garza appeared in 17 games that season, posting a 7.36 ERA in 18.1 innings. Advertisement Since being let go by Boston, Garza has joined the Los Angeles Angels and Giants, but did not make big league appearances for either club before being dealt to New York. Fan tosses ball near home plate in strange sequence during Braves-Giants game
The Atlanta Braves' losing streak reached five games Friday. But much of the discussion after the San Francisco Giants' 5-4 victory centered around a bizarre moment in the fourth inning. A fan sitting in the stands at Oracle Park threw a ball toward home plate at about the same time Braves first baseman Matt Olson scored a run. Olson rounded third base and headed home after teammate Sean Murphy hit a fly ball to the outfield. The second ball landed near home plate almost immediately after Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski's throw made its way into catcher Patrick Bailey's mitt. The extra baseball appeared to leave Bailey, Olson and others in a brief state of confusion. "Where did the other ball come from?" a Giants' broadcaster asked. "(It) came outta the upper deck," his broadcasting partner responded. "Some clown threw the baseball onto the field. I have never seen that." The game umpires briefly convened to discuss the strange sequence. The game eventually resumed, and Olson's run reduced the Giants' lead to 3-1. Giants manager Bob Melvin addressed the incident after the game. "That's a first," Melvin said. "I've never seen that before. I don't know where it came from. I don't know what the rule is. I think everybody was a little surprised by it. It didn't affect the play, but it was extremely odd to see another baseball come on the field." The Braves dropped a sixth consecutive game Saturday afternoon after the Giants hit a two-run walk-off homer in the ninth inning for a 3-2 victory. Matt Chapman hits 2-run HR in 9th to give Giants 3-2 win over Braves
Matt Chapman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Saturday for their fourth straight win. Heliot Ramos singled with one out against Braves reliever Pierce Johnson (1-3). After Wilmer Flores popped out, Chapman homered to left for his 12th of the season. It spoiled a stellar start by Atlanta's Bryce Elder, who allowed a run and three hits while striking out 12 in eight innings. The Braves lost their sixth straight. Giants starter Logan Webb gave up two runs and six hits in six innings while striking out 10 — his fourth double-digit effort of the season. Tyler Rogers (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win. Flores had a solo homer to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in the fourth, and Michael Harris went deep to tie fort the Braves in the fifth. Harris' shot came one pitch after Atlanta manager Brian Snitker was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The Braves took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Marcell Ozuna beat out a potential double play with the bases loaded and one out as Ronald Acuña Jr. scored the go-ahead run. Key moment With the Giants down to their final out, Chapman squared up an 88 mile-per-hour curveball from Johnson on a 1-1 count in the middle of the strike zone to give San Francisco its second straight walk-off win over Atlanta. Key stat The Giants played in their fifth straight one-run game and won their fourth in a row. Up next Giants RHP Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.18 ERA) will start the series finale against Braves RHP Spencer Strider (0-4, 5.68).
