
Scientists reveal foolproof formula for a lifetime of happiness - and it takes just five minutes to perform
Just five minutes a day performing 'micro-acts of joy' that foster positive emotions is enough to banish stress, boost health, and improve sleep quality, experts found.
According to stress expert Dr Elissa Epel, listening to laughter, admiring a flower on a local walk or doing something nice for a friend can measurably improve people's emotional well-being and attitudes toward life.
Epel, an expert on stress and ageing who oversaw the new research, said: 'We were quite taken aback by the size of the improvements to people's emotional well-being.'
Epel's team at the University of California San Francisco studied almost 18,000 people, mainly from the U.S., UK, and Canada, for the web-based 'Big Joy Project' over a two-year period to 2024.
It was the first study to look at whether small, easy-to-do acts that take minimal time could have measurable and lasting effects on people. Participants were asked to perform five-ten minute acts of joy for a week.
Prof Epel said the thousands of people who took part in her project matched the positive results achieved by programs that required months of classes, for hours at a time.
The study, published in the Journal Of Medical Internet Research, asked participants to perform seven acts over seven days, such as sharing a moment of celebration with someone else, doing something kind for another person, making a gratitude list or watching an awe-inspiring video about nature.
Prof Epel said her team picked tasks that were focused on promoting feelings of hope and optimism, wonder and awe, or fun and silliness.
Each task took under ten minutes, including answering short questions.
Participants were quizzed about their emotional and physical health at the start and end of the week-long project, providing a measure of their emotional well-being, positive emotions, and 'happiness agency', along with their stress and sleep quality.
The psychologists explained that emotional well-being includes how satisfied people are with their lives and whether they have purpose and meaning.
Happiness agency is how much control they feel they have over their emotions.
The team found improvements in all areas, and the benefits increased depending on how fully people participated in the program, meaning those who completed all seven days saw greater benefits than those who only managed two or three.
While further research was needed, according to Epel, it's clear that a daily dose of joy could help people in trying times: 'All of this well-being stuff, it's not a luxury.
'We often say that we'll let ourselves be happy once we've reached some point or finished some task. Well, we want to flip that – we need the energy of joy to get through the hard parts. These are really necessary skills.'

Warning to young women after surge in egg donations to fertility clinics despite risk of severe side effects
WOMEN as young as 18 are risking their health by donating their eggs in return for cash, campaigners warn. Surrogacy Concern said the number of 18 to 25-year-olds signing up to donate to private fertility clinics shot up from 190 in 2012 to 509 in 2022. It is illegal in the UK to buy a woman's eggs but clinics can pay up to £985 for expenses. The campaign group said some openly advertise the sum to young women and pay the full amount without asking for receipts. It said donation is generally safe but can be uncomfortable, with possible severe side-effects such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, bowel perforations, abscesses and even sepsis. Surrogacy Concern founder Helen Gibson said teenagers may also underestimate the effects on their mental health. She said: 'We're really worried that women are doing this for money and are not being fully informed of the risks to their health. 'This is a lot of money at any age but especially if you're working-class or a student. 'You could do it three times and make nearly £3,000, and you're allowed to do up to ten cycles. It's insanity. 'We want the minimum age for donation to rise to 25, all payments ended to remove the risk of financial motivation and adverts asking for young women to donate their eggs to be banned.' Donor eggs must be taken from women younger than 35 as that is when they are most fertile. They take hormone drugs to stimulate the ovaries before the eggs are removed with a needle. Woman speaks out after having calf torn off & ‘bone exposed' in Fourth of July shark attack that injured heroic husband
A WOMAN gives an update a year after surviving a brutal heart attack that left her calf torn off during a Fourth of July celebration. Tabatha Sullivent was one of four people injured in a shark attack on South Padre Island off the southern coast of Texas when something approached her. 4 4 "All I saw was something gray in the water, so I just kicked at it because I thought 'Oh my God, it's a huge fish,'" she told Valley Central. On July 4, 2024, Sullivent was on a trip with family and friends celebrating a birthday, a graduation, an engagement, and an anniversary. However, a simple trip to the beach nearly turned into tragedy after Sullivent was injured in a shark attack. Sullivent kicked at the shark when it suddenly attacked and bit off a majority of her left calf. Cellphone footage showed Sullivent bleeding heavily after she was pulled from the water with her left calf missing. She was rushed to a hospital but had to be flown to another facility due to the extent of her injuries. But the journey had only just begun as Sullivent faced several procedures, fought an infection, and underwent a skin graft. Last August, she shared an update on social media, revealing how it was taking one of her first steps since the attack "What I lost isn't coming back, and I think that's the hardest part for me right now. Is…just knowing my leg isn't gonna…doesn't grow back," she wrote. Sullivent told the outlet that she spent a month recovering in McAllen, Texas, before being transferred to her home near Dallas. "I had a bone exposed that I had to get another skin graft done on that one, so I did that one at Baylor in Dallas," she said. Sullivent's goal was to walk at her daughter's wedding, just four months after the attack. "I walked down the aisle, and I was dancing unassisted, so it was amazing it was great," she said. Sullivent's husband was also injured in the attack after he tried to rescue his wife. Now, the couple is going on vacation again, but they're steering clear of the beach. "Get a nice little tan going, and stay off the beach and out of the water, we do have the pool so that we can do that," Sullivent explained. Her whole family has gone to counseling since the attack, and Sullivent has begun seeing a therapist on her own. She is working through her trauma to hopefully get back to some of her favorite hobbies. "I want to go on the boat, I want to go snorkeling, I want to get in the water. I notice now if I see snorkeling adventures or deeper water, I'm not sure I could get in it," she said. "I think it would be really hard for me. And I would probably just panic and not know what was around me." However, the journey isn't over, as Sullivent explained she will have to undergo another plastic surgery soon and is experiencing nerve pain. She plans on getting cosmetic surgery on her leg for aesthetic purposes and to better protect her nearly exposed bone. Still, Sullivent said she's doing her best to remember the things she can do. 4
