Four held for chain snatching, gold worth Rs 30 lakh seized
Vijayawada: In a significant breakthrough, NTR district police have arrested four individuals in connection with numerous chain snatching and theft cases, recovering approximately 476 grams of gold jewellery valued at around Rs 30 lakh along with two motorcycles.
Addressing the press conference at the Commissionerate here on Wednesday, Police Commissioner SV Rajasekhara Babu specially commended ASI Balayya, Swami, Satyanarayana, head constable Ravi, and constables Mithun, Suresh, Shabbir, and Ramana for their pivotal role in apprehending the chain snatchers.
CCS inspectors and their teams formed multiple special units across all police stationsin the district to closely monitor suspicious activities. Based on precise technical intelligence, CCS Inspector Ram Kumar and his team apprehended four individuals near the Tummalapalem bus stop in Ibrahimpatnam.
The suspects had attempted to flee upon noticing the vehicle inspection. Subsequent interrogation led to the recovery of gold ornaments from 25 chain snatching cases and two motorcycles, resulting in their immediate arrest.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Achi Giribabu and Achi Mahesh both from Upputuru in Nellore district, Galeti Venkata Ramana from Donabanda in NTR district and Mogili Sandhya from Kondapalli in NTR district.
During the interrogation, it was revealed that the prime accused Achi Giribabu initially worked as an agricultural labourer in Upputuru village. He targeted lone women, snatching their gold chains while riding his Unicorn motorcycle. Giribabu confessed to committing 12 chain snatching offenses in and around his native Nellore district previously, for which he was arrested and imprisoned.
Upon his release, fearing re-arrest in Nellore, he moved to Kondapalli in NTR district, where his second wife, Venkata Ramanamma, resided. Later, he relocated to Donabanda and continued his criminal activities.
Giribabu alone committed 15 snatching offenses on his motorcycle. He collaborated with his brother Mahesh for four snatching incidents, with his wife Venkata Ramana for three snatching incidents, and with his sister-in-law Mogili Sandhya for three chain snatching incidents, bringing the total to 25 chain snatching offenses.
Crime DCP Tirumaleswara Reddy, Crime ADC P M Raja Rao, ACP Venkateswarlu,Inspector Ram Kumar, and other police personnel were present.

Bank fraud amount increased three times to Rs 36,014 crore in 2024-'25, says RBI
The amount involved in bank frauds increased three times to Rs 36,014 in the financial year 2024-'25, showed data from the Reserve Bank of India. The amount involved in bank frauds was Rs 12,230 crore in the previous financial year 2023-'24, according to the central bank's annual report released on Wednesday. The central bank attributed the increase to 'removal of fraud classification in 122 cases amounting to Rs 18,674 crore reported during the previous financial year and reporting afresh during the current financial year after re-examination and ensuring compliance' with a March 2023 judgement of the Supreme Court. The number of registered cases of fraud fell to 23,953 in 2024-'25 from 36,060 in the previous year. Private banks accounted for 59.4% (Rs 10,088 crore) of all fraud cases, the data showed. Public sector banks accounted for 29% (Rs 25,667 crore) of the cases. In 2024-'25, the frauds, in terms of numbers, took place mainly in the category of digital payments in terms of numbers and predominantly in the loan portfolio in terms of the value, the central bank said. The central bank's annual report added that the data pertained to frauds of Rs 1 lakh and above that were reported during the financial year. The frauds reported during 2024-'25 could have taken place in previous years before they were reported, it added.

Ankita Bhandari murder case Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at Vanantra Resort in Rishikesh, was killed by the resort owner, Pulkit Arya, and his employees – Bhaskar and Gupta – on the night of September 18, 2022. According to the police, Pulkit killed Ankita, a resident of Dobh-Srikot village in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district, after she declined to provide 'special services' to some guests at the resort. After a heated exchange with Pulkit, Ankita was reportedly forced into a vehicle and later pushed into the Chilla canal. Her body was found in the canal on September 24, after the three accused confessed to the crime. How Ankita Bhandari was killed Ankita's disappearance was first noticed by her friend, Pushp, who said she had called him on the night of September 18. Ankita reportedly told him that she was being pressured by the accused to 'provide special services for a VIP' in exchange for Rs 10,000. It was Pushp who had told her about an opening at a resort in Rishikesh, which Ankita agreed to join. She became a receptionist at the Vanantra Resort in Pauri district's Yamkeshwar in August 2022. It was not even a month into her job and Ankita was murdered. Pushp told the court that he had last spoken to Ankita at 8:32 pm and she was 'sensing some fear' while in the presence of the accused. Her phone became unreachable after that. Pushp contacted Pulkit directly, who told him that Ankita had gone to her room. 'The accused wanted to speak to the father of the deceased… (and) the deceased was further troubled due to this reason. One morning, the deceased was found missing from the resort. She was not in her room. During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused was molesting the deceased in the resort; they were pressuring her to give extra services to the guest, to which the deceased was not agreeable,' Indian Express reported, citing the FIR filed in the case. 'The applicant (Ankit Gupta) and the co-accused had a sense of fear that perhaps the deceased might reveal it to others. According to the prosecution, on 18.09.2022, the applicant, along with the co-accused, took the deceased out of the resort, they killed the deceased and pushed her into a canal. It also showed multiple injuries, including blunt force trauma that indicated physical assault, as per NDTV. Her viscera samples were also tested and did not show signs of sexual assault. Public outrage over Ankita Bhandari case The initial investigation into Ankita Bhandar's murder case has raised many questions. The night she was killed, the accused told the local Patwari (revenue police officer) that she was missing. However, the officer did not file a case. The Vanantra Resort, located in a semi-rural area, falls outside the jurisdiction of regular police. Patwari Vaibhav Pratap did not disclose the case to anyone and went on leave, as per the Indian Express report. As pressure from the public mounted and suspicion from Ankita's family and friends rose, the case was transferred to the regular police three days after her killing. The district administration also razed a part of the resort , leading to allegations that it was done to 'destroy' crucial evidence, reported Indian Express. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After Pulkit's arrest, Uttarakhand BJP expelled his father, Vinod, and elder brother from the party. Vinod Arya had served as a minister of state in the Trivendra Singh Rawat-led BJP government. The politician had defended his son, calling him a 'simple boy'. 'Seedha sadha balak hai (he is a simple boy). He is only concerned about his work. I want justice for both my son Pulkit and Ankita Bhandari,' Arya had said, inviting a severe backlash. The Uttarakhand government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. Patwari Vaibhav Pratap was arrested by the SIT for negligence and allegedly siding with the accused. During the SIT probe, former employees are said to have alleged that Pulkit and Ankit Gupta frequently brought women to the resort. They also alleged that the female staff were subjected to verbal and physical abuse. More than 100 individuals, including resort employees, digital forensic experts and friends of Ankita, were interviewed. Ankita Bhandari's family gets justice On Friday, Pulkit was found guilty of IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (concealing evidence), 354A (molestation and outraging the modesty of a woman) and the Immoral Trafficking Act. 45-year-old diamond polisher battling financial crunch ends life in Surat: Police
Over a week after the Gujarat government announced a special package for the diamond industry, a 45-year-old diamond polisher ended his life in Surat's Kamrej area, police said on Thursday. The victim, who was allegedly battling financial crunch, took the extreme step on Wednesday evening, by consuming poison, said police. According to the details from Kamrej police officials, the deceased, identified as Kapil Nimavat, was a native of Amreli district and was residing at Derod village in Kamrej. On Wednesday evening, he consumed poison on the roadside near Bhurkiya farm at Derod village, said police, adding, a passerby spotted him lying unconscious and informed the cops. After identifying him, the victim was rushed to hospital and his family was informed, said police. The victim could not be saved and died during treatment, said police. The Kamrej police has lodged an accidental death complaint into the matter. During the probe, the victim's younger brother, Mehul, told the police that 'his brother was working at a diamond factory in Varachha and was not earning well'. 'My elder brother had been working as a diamond polisher for the last 10 years. Due to the recession in the industry, he had been getting half salary of Rs 15,000 since January this year, which was not sufficient to meet the monthly expenses,' Mehul told The Indian Express. 'He has two children and his elder daughter goes to school. He was the only earning hand in the family. He had to pay Rs 4,000 monthly house rent among other expenses. He was depressed as he was unable to pay the rent for a couple of months,' he said. An official from Kamrej police station said: 'According to probe, he was facing financial crises and was not earning well to meet the monthly expenses, following which he committed suicide'. Diamond Workers' Union Gujarat (DWUG) vice-president Bhavesh Tank told The Indian Express, 'One more diamond polisher has ended his life due to financial crises. In last 18 months, over 75 diamond polishers have committed suicide. He (Kapil) is survived by two children and his wife. Now, who will look after his family?' 'We have made regular representations to the state government to provide financial aid to help the families of diamond polishers who had committed suicide. The government had declared a package for diamond polishers but that does not include semi-unemployed (50 per cent salary earners). The government had declared Rs 13,500 school fees to be paid for the children of the diamond polishers which is insufficient,' he said. 'The government should financially help families of diamond polishers who committed suicide and also help diamond polishers financially,' Tank said. On May 24, Minister of State for Industries, Harsh Sanghavi, in a media briefing in Surat, announced the special assistance package.
