But what had happened? We will explain.
Ankita Bhandari murder case
Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at Vanantra Resort in Rishikesh, was killed by the resort owner, Pulkit Arya, and his employees – Bhaskar and Gupta – on the night of September 18, 2022.
According to the police, Pulkit killed Ankita, a resident of Dobh-Srikot village in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district, after she declined to provide 'special services' to some guests at the resort.
After a heated exchange with Pulkit, Ankita was reportedly forced into a vehicle and later pushed into the Chilla canal.
Her body was found in the canal on September 24, after the three accused confessed to the crime.
How Ankita Bhandari was killed
Ankita's disappearance was first noticed by her friend, Pushp, who said she had called him on the night of September 18.
Ankita reportedly told him that she was being pressured by the accused to 'provide special services for a VIP' in exchange for Rs 10,000.
It was Pushp who had told her about an opening at a resort in Rishikesh, which Ankita agreed to join. She became a receptionist at the Vanantra Resort in Pauri district's Yamkeshwar in August 2022.
It was not even a month into her job and Ankita was murdered.
Pushp told the court that he had last spoken to Ankita at 8:32 pm and she was 'sensing some fear' while in the presence of the accused. Her phone became unreachable after that.
Pushp contacted Pulkit directly, who told him that Ankita had gone to her room.

The next morning, Pulkit's phone was also unreachable. Pushp and Ankita's family then approached the police, reported NDTV.
'The accused wanted to speak to the father of the deceased… (and) the deceased was further troubled due to this reason. One morning, the deceased was found missing from the resort. She was not in her room. During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused was molesting the deceased in the resort; they were pressuring her to give extra services to the guest, to which the deceased was not agreeable,' Indian Express reported, citing the FIR filed in the case.
'The applicant (Ankit Gupta) and the co-accused had a sense of fear that perhaps the deceased might reveal it to others. According to the prosecution, on 18.09.2022, the applicant, along with the co-accused, took the deceased out of the resort, they killed the deceased and pushed her into a canal. The dead body of the deceased was recovered on 24.09.2022.'

Her post-mortem conducted by AIIMS Rishikesh revealed drowning as the cause of death. It also showed multiple injuries, including blunt force trauma that indicated physical assault, as per NDTV. Her viscera samples were also tested and did not show signs of sexual assault.
Public outrage over Ankita Bhandari case
The initial investigation into Ankita Bhandar's murder case has raised many questions.
The night she was killed, the accused told the local Patwari (revenue police officer) that she was missing. However, the officer did not file a case.
The Vanantra Resort, located in a semi-rural area, falls outside the jurisdiction of regular police.
Patwari Vaibhav Pratap did not disclose the case to anyone and went on leave, as per the Indian Express report.
As pressure from the public mounted and suspicion from Ankita's family and friends rose, the case was transferred to the regular police three days after her killing.

After the case gained national limelight, the police arrested Pulkit, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta.
The district administration also razed a part of the resort , leading to allegations that it was done to 'destroy' crucial evidence, reported Indian Express.

After Pulkit's arrest, Uttarakhand BJP expelled his father, Vinod, and elder brother from the party.
Vinod Arya had served as a minister of state in the Trivendra Singh Rawat-led BJP government.
The politician had defended his son, calling him a 'simple boy'. 'Seedha sadha balak hai (he is a simple boy). He is only concerned about his work. I want justice for both my son Pulkit and Ankita Bhandari,' Arya had said, inviting a severe backlash.
The Uttarakhand government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
Patwari Vaibhav Pratap was arrested by the SIT for negligence and allegedly siding with the accused. During the SIT probe, former employees are said to have alleged that Pulkit and Ankit Gupta frequently brought women to the resort. They also alleged that the female staff were subjected to verbal and physical abuse.
More than 100 individuals, including resort employees, digital forensic experts and friends of Ankita, were interviewed.

In December 2022, the prosecution filed a 500-page chargesheet.
The case's hearing went on for two years and eight months, during which 47 witnesses were examined.
Ankita Bhandari's family gets justice
On Friday, Pulkit was found guilty of IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (concealing evidence), 354A (molestation and outraging the modesty of a woman) and the Immoral Trafficking Act. The accused Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta were convicted of murder, concealing evidence, and the Immoral Trafficking Act.

Bombay High Court holds businessman's arrest in Rs 67 cr case illegal, orders his release
Representative image MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court vacation bench on Friday declared the arrest of Anchor Group director Hemang Shah , 50, by Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) as illegal, citing failure by police to produce him before a magistrate in 24 hours. The court ordered his immediate release from Arthur Road Jail. The vacation bench, comprising Justices Gauri Godse and Somasekhar Sundaresan, noted that chat messages between the wives of the two brothers supported Hemang Shah's claim that his arrest and continued custody were intended to recover the settlement amount in mediation between family members. The arrest was based on allegations of defrauding his elder brother, Mehul Shah, of Rs 67 crore. Hemang Shah petitioned the HC, arguing that his arrest was illegal since he was not produced before a magistrate within 24 hours as required by law. He was detained at Delhi airport at 5.30 pm on May 17 and produced in court only at 10.45 pm on May 18. The HC agreed, stating that his arrest "without producing him before the nearest magistrate within 24 hours is completely illegal" and infringes on fundamental rights under Article 22(2), which mandates such production. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The FIR by the elder brother was lodged with Malabar Hill police station in South Mumbai at 2.14 am, and a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued at the police station's request. The dispute, being resolved before a mediator, is between Hemang on one side and his brother and their father on the other. The FIR was filed during mediation, and Hemang, scheduled to fly to Muscat from Delhi on May 17, was apprehended at the airport due to the LOC. Police stated they arrested him on May 18 after the immigration department handed him over at 4.30 am, and then he was brought to Mumbai. Senior counsel for the elder brother-the complainant-argued that the immigration officers cannot be considered police officers, and hence his custody after being "accosted" at the airport was not an "arrest" by cops. The EOW's arrest memo states he was arrested on May 18 at 7.30 pm. The HC bench said, "In our view, the act of the Immigration Officers to accost the petitioner or detain him on 17th May 2025 at 1730 hours is the act of arrest, and therefore the period of 24 hours as contemplated under Section 58 of BNS and Article 22(2) of the Constitution of India shall begin on 17th May 2025 at 1730 hours."

Rs 177 Cr Torres Fraud: ‘Whistleblower' for EOW is a key accused for ED
The investigations of the two probe agencies in the Torres Ponzi scheme case, in which over 15,000 people were defrauded to the tune of Rs 177 crore, do not seem to be on the same page as far as the role of the alleged 'whistleblower' of the case CA Abhishek Gupta is concerned. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has recently filed a chargesheet against 13 individuals and entities in the case, has claimed that during their money laundering investigation, they discovered CA Abhishek Gupta is one of the key accused in the case. ED had initiated an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act based on the predicate offence lodged by the APMC police station of Navi Mumbai police, which has also named Gupta as an accused in their FIR. According to the anti-money laundering agency, Gupta has been the statutory auditor of M/s Platinum Hern Pvt Ltd (the company that ran Torres Ponzi schemes) since its incorporation. Gupta failed to report financial irregularities in a timely and proactive manner despite claiming to have disclosed them in his audit reports. CA Gupta has claimed to be the whistleblower of the case. Gupta, after internally flagging the financial irregularities with the Torres's top management, had sent the details via emails to various law enforcement agencies (including Mumbai Police-EOW) highlighting the criminal financial irregularities. However, the ED is not buying this claim. According to the central agency, Gupta's delayed (email) complaint on January 2, 2025, long after becoming aware of the misconduct, undermines his claim of acting as a whistleblower, the agency sources said. Sources further added that the ED stated in the chargesheet that there is no evidence of any earlier effort to report or escalate the issues to authorities. His inaction during the crucial period suggests a lapse in professional responsibility and indicates complicity in the company's continued illegal operations. These all prove that he knowingly assisted the company in the activities of money laundering. The Torres Ponzi scheme key operatives had fled the country before the fraud surfaced fully. And for the initial few weeks, they kept investors misguided by claiming that by sending messages to the investors from undisclosed locations, Gupta and CEO Tausif Reyaz were the brains behind the scam. However, Gupta regularly presented himself before the police and assisted them in the probe. He even approached the Bombay High Court as a 'whistleblower' seeking protection from any coercive action. The High Court had considered his plea. The EOW officials too considered him the whistleblower in the case and refrained from filing charges against him in their chargesheet. In fact, the EOW made him one of the key witnesses of the case. It is pertinent to note that allegations were also levelled against the police department for not promptly acting on the complaints from various individuals against Torres before all masterminds escaped the country. Geeta Gupta, one of the victim investors and member of the core group legally fighting the case on behalf of investors, said, 'We too suspect Gupta for his involvement in the fraud.' However, advocate Vivek Tiwari representing Gupta, said, 'My client reported financial irregularities in his audit reports dated 26/12/2024 and informed the relevant authorities, including the customs department and the opposition leader in December 2024 to protect the public interest. Despite receiving no positive response, my client continued to contact investigation agencies starting from 30/12/2024. My client is a key witness in the Mumbai EOW and in the ED chargesheet, the accusations against my client are mischaracterized, indicating a lack of coordination between investigation agencies. My client has consistently cooperated with the ED, and all allegations against him are false and baseless.' Ukrainians invested Rs 4.35 crore to commit Rs 177 crore fraud According to the sources, the ED, in its money laundering investigation, has found that the Ukrainian masterminds invested nearly Rs 4.35 crore as capital and, using it, carried out mass fraud worth Rs 177 crore. The agency's probe has revealed that the cash was received from Oleksandr Zapichenko, alias Alex, one of the two Ukrainian masterminds, and then entry operator Lalan Jamedar Singh used various entities for providing accommodation entries. Through two entities, Singh allegedly made bogus investments worth Rs 45 lakh and Rs 3.9 crore in Platinum Hern Pvt Ltd.

Mukhtar Ansari's Family Floundering In Eastern UP As Son Abbas May Lose MLA Seat Over Jail Term
Last Updated: Mau MLA Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in a 2022 hate speech case by a UP court on Saturday Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari was convicted and handed a two-year jail term on Saturday by the Mau district court in a 2022 hate speech case, which is likely to lead to his disqualification from the assembly. Ansari was also fined Rs 3,000 by the MP/MLA court. Abbas, son of the notorious mafia-turned-politician, the late Mukhtar Ansari, is an MLA from the Mau Sadar assembly seat, representing the Suheldev Bahujan Samaj Party (SBSP) led by Om Prakash Rajbhar. The SBSP was in alliance with the Samajwadi Party during the 2022 assembly polls when Ansari made the controversial speech at a public rally in Mau on March 3, 2022. Alluding to the SP-SBSP coming to power, he said, 'Once in power, we will settle scores with officials. Nobody will be transferred for the first six months of the new government. These officials will instead have to give an account of their actions up to now. Theek se hisab kitab kiya jayega." The remarks created controversy and were seen as threatening officials and inciting animosity among the public. An FIR was lodged against Ansari and two others by the Mau police. The Election Commission of India also invoked a 24-hour campaign ban against Abbas Ansari. With the MP/MLA court in Mau convicting him and announcing a two-year jail term, he faces the threat of losing his assembly membership. According to Supreme Court directives, any MP or MLA convicted and sentenced to two or more years in prison is liable to lose the house membership immediately. They do, however, have recourse to appeal in a higher court. After the Mau court order, the role of the assembly speaker becomes crucial. He will need to notify the disqualification of Abbas Ansari from the house. All eyes will now be on speaker Satish Mahana's office and how soon the notification is issued. The SBSP, which Abbas Ansari represents, has shifted its allegiance towards the Bharatiya Janata Party since the 2022 assembly polls. While in alliance with the SP during the elections, it later joined the BJP government. SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar is a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government. The SBSP was quick to distance itself from the Abbas Ansari controversy. The Ansari family, which had a deep influence on eastern Uttar Pradesh politics, now faces a precarious future. Abbas's father, Mukhtar Ansari, a five-term MLA from Mau, died while in prison in 2024, and the family's political clout has been waning since. However, Mukhtar's brother, Afzal Ansari, managed to win the Gazipur Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The government has cracked down on the criminal activities of Mukhtar Ansari's gang members. Mukhtar's wife, Afsha Ansari, has been declared a fugitive, and a reward of Rs 1 lakh is offered for any information leading to her arrest. First Published: May 31, 2025, 20:38 IST
