Blueshark aims to have over 50 battery swapping stations nationwide by mid-2026 in tie-up with Petronas

The Sun14-07-2025
SHAH ALAM: Blueshark Ecosystem Sdn Bhd, in partnership with Petronas Dagangan Bhd, aims to expand its network of battery swap stations from 20 to more than 50 nationwide by the middle of next year, in a push to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Malaysia.
Each battery swap station costs about RM50,000, with expenses shared between Blueshark and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), Blueshark CEO Jeff Chong told SunBiz in an interview.
A joint venture agreement was signed on May 9, aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric two-wheelers in Malaysia. Blueshark holds a 51% stake and Petronas Dagangan the remaining 49% in the joint venture.
Chong said the planned expansion is based on the expected uptake of Blueshark's e-bikes.
'We are very confident that this year we will see at least tenfold growth compared to last year,' he said, adding that this growth supports the targeted number of new stations.
'We don't want too many stations that end up underused. We need to ensure a good return on investment (ROI),' he added.
The rollout will initially focus on the Klang Valley, Johor and Penang.
'We will prioritise these three areas first because our bike population is concentrated in these cities,' Chong said.
He noted that the strategic partnership with Petronas enhances brand trust and broadens market reach.
'Petronas is one of the top five most cash-rich companies in Southeast Asia and a national brand in Malaysia.'
Chong said Petronas' network of more than 1,000 stations nationwide offers Blueshark wide coverage. 'Placing our battery swap stations at Petronas stations makes it much easier and more convenient for customers.'
Chong highlighted that many Petronas stations are already installing rooftop solar panels, which could eventually power the battery swap infrastructure. 'This would allow us to offer a fully clean energy, net-zero emissions solution.':
He pointed out that Petronas' strong business-to-business network would support Blueshark's growth in the commercial segment.
'We are also collaborating with Mesra to create a point system to benefit customers. There's a lot of synergy in working together,' he added.
Future plans include opening Blueshark showrooms at Petronas stations and launching joint promotions via Petronas and the Setel app.
Chong expressed hope that the upcoming national budget would continue to support two-wheeler EV adoption.
'The carbon emissions from two motorbikes are equivalent to those of one car. So, if the government supports two-wheelers, the ROI is better and emissions can be reduced more effectively,' he said.
The current RM2,400 subsidy for electric cars has minimal impact on middle- and high-income groups, he opined.
'For them, the amount is too small to make an impact. But if you apply a RM2,400 subsidy to e-bikes, you can help the B40 group and achieve better environmental outcomes with a relatively small investment.'
Chong cited data showing that motorcycles emit about 103 grams of carbon per passenger per kilometre, compared to 192 grams for cars.
'If the government wants to address this issue effectively, it should focus on bikes rather than cars. The ROI will be higher, especially considering Malaysia has almost 15 million bikes on the road,' he said.
Chong called for more green funding to support industry growth, noting that Malaysia's adoption of electric two-wheelers remains relatively low compared to countries like Thailand and Vietnam, where supportive policies and stronger demand have driven growth.
'Right now, there isn't much funding or support to grow this sector. The government should consider this,' he said.

RM1.7mil profit promise ends in loss

Too good to be true: Chan (left) showing the mobile app on his phone that was used to track his investments during a press conference held by Yuen (right). IPOH: Believing that his 'investments' in shares had earned him RM1.7mil, a factory owner ended up RM210,000 poorer instead. Just wanting to be known as Chan, the 47-year-old said he came across a social media advertisement about investing in shares and clicked on the post. He said the link led him to a WhatsApp chat channel where he started communicating with a woman who claimed to be named Linda. 'She offered me several company share schemes and I started one with RM10,000,' Chan said at a press conference held by Perak MCA public services and complaints bureau chief Charles Yuen here yesterday. Chan said he did an online search of the firms and found that they were listed as private limited companies. 'As I was required to pay more to access the company profile, I decided to just invest in it,' he added. Chan made about RM50,000 at the initial stage and decided to invest more. He said he was asked to download a mobile app called CDT Citi to keep track of his investments. 'The app provided simple explanations on how to invest, which made it even more convincing,' he said. In May, Chan was notified that his investments had returned a profit of RM1.7mil and that he could withdraw the money. 'To do so, I was required to pay commissions and some taxes. After paying about RM29,000, I was still unable to withdraw the money,' he said, adding that he lodged a police report on July 13. Chan finally realised he had been conned when he was instructed to pay more. 'I urge people to be careful and not trust any investment scheme on social media. If there are victims like me, I hope they will go to the police,' he added. Yuen said the police should investigate the companies first, which could provide more leads. 'I think it will be difficult to track down this so-called Linda. The police should check the companies to see if they are genuine or proxies used by scammers.'

One-off RM100 aid for every adult M'sian: PM

PETALING JAYA: In a sweeping move to ease financial pressure on Malaysians and uplift the national spirit ahead of Merdeka and Malaysia Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday unveiled a RM2 billion cash aid initiative for all adults, a significant boost in subsidies for essential goods and an additional public holiday. 'In celebration of our National Day, I am pleased to announce that every adult Malaysian will receive RM100 through his MyKad under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah scheme,' he said during a special televised address. The one-off aid will benefit 22 million citizens aged 18 and above. It can be utilised between Aug 31 and Dec 31 at over 4,100 participating outlets nationwide, including Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave, 99 Speedmart and select local grocery stores. 'That means a household consisting of a husband, wife and two adult children will receive RM400 in total.' He said with this latest injection, the combined allocation for the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah initiatives will increase to RM15 billion from RM13 billion, making it the largest-ever cash assistance programme in Malaysia's history and the first time such aid is being extended to all adult Malaysians. Acknowledging that some recipients may not necessarily need the assistance, Anwar encouraged those in a better financial position to leave the credit unspent. 'For those who choose not to use it, the government intends to channel the unused balance at the end of the year towards programmes that support vulnerable communities next year.' Anwar also announced that the allocation for the Jualan Rahmah Madani programme would be doubled to RM600 million, up from RM300 million this year, enabling the programme to expand both in frequency and geographic reach, covering 600 state constituencies in the country. 'We want the people to have better access to basic necessities at affordable prices, no matter where they live. We will also expand the range of essential items offered, providing the public with more options and better access to basic necessities at lower prices.' The programme is part of the government's broader strategy to make essential goods more affordable for Malaysians and reduce everyday financial strain. Capping the announcements, Anwar declared that Sept 15, which falls on a Monday, will be a public holiday, effectively creating a long weekend for Malaysians to celebrate the formation of the country. 'This holiday is a token of appreciation for the spirit of togetherness that defines our country. It is also a chance for people to reconnect with their roots or travel locally.'

SejaTi MADANI Initiative: Over 1,000 Grant Applications Received, 668 Projects Approved

KOTA BHARU, July 23 (Bernama) -- The SejaTi MADANI initiative continues to record encouraging success in Kelantan, with a total of 1,135 grant applications received as of yesterday from communities across the state. The Kelantan Federal Development Office of the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM), in a statement today, said that out of the total, 668 projects had been approved and were currently being implemented, reflecting the people of Kelantan's strong commitment to empowering the local economy through various community projects. 'For the year 2024 alone, 1,065 applications have been received, with 523 projects approved and carried out. The increase in applications this year proves the public's growing awareness and confidence in the potential of the SejaTi MADANI programme to support community-based economic development. 'Five key sectors have been the main focus of grant applications, namely agriculture and food, tailoring and handicrafts, herbs and health, tourism and hospitality, as well as green and recycling activities. The agriculture and food sector recorded the highest number of applications, showing the community's inclination to making it a stable and sustainable source of income,' the statement read. According to ICU JPM, the districts of Tumpat, Kubang Kerian, Bachok and Pasir Puteh recorded the highest number of applications, reflecting strong interest and active participation of the community in seizing the opportunities offered by the initiative. The SejaTi MADANI programme empowers grassroots communities to plan and implement projects that suit their needs with grant support of up to RM100,000. 'Among the projects that have recorded notable achievements are the stingless bee farming project by the Tasek Berangan Community Organisation in Pasir Mas, which produces high-quality stingless bee honey for the local market and has the potential to be expanded as an agro-tourism product,' ICU JPM said. In addition, corn and vegetable farming in Kampung Paloh, Tanah Merah, and seedless watermelon cultivation in Kampung Air Tawar, Semerak, Pasir Puteh have also achieved success. 'The implementation of this programme is expected to continue serving as a key platform in sustainably empowering the people of Kelantan economically,' read the statement.
