Gauff, Kessler kick off partnership with doubles crown at National Bank Open

MONTREAL – Coco Gauff is leaving Montreal as a champion after all.
Gauff teamed with fellow American McCartney Kessler for a 6-4, 1-6, 13-11 win over Taylor Townsend of the United States and China's Zhang Shuai on Wednesday in the National Bank Open women's doubles final.
Gauff was playing in just her third doubles tournament since splitting with longtime partner Jessica Pegula after the 2024 Paris Olympics. That pair won the Canadian Open women's doubles crown in 2022.
She found chemistry with Kessler in their debut partnership that included wins over veteran doubles players Barbora Krejcikova and Jelena Ostapenko and third-seeded team of Townsend and Zhang.
It also helped ease the sting of crashing out of the singles competition as the top seed with a round of 16 loss to Canada's Victoria Mboko.
Mboko was set to face ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the singles semifinals later Wednesday while Naomi Osaka of Japan faced Clara Tauson of Denmark.

Displaying maturity beyond her years, rising Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko overcome a rocky start to stun Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina in the National Bank Open semifinals Wednesday night in Montreal. 'Anything can happen,' Mboko told a delirious, sold-out crowd at IGA Stadium after beating the former Wimbledon champion 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in two hours, 46 minutes. Mboko, only 18 years old and ranked No. 85 entering the National Bank Open, needed a wild card from organizers just to enter the tournament. The Toronto teenager has now won six straight matches, including upsets over top-seeded American Coco Gauff on Saturday and now the No. 9 seed Rybakina. On Thursday she will face either unseeded Naomi Osaka of Japan or 16th-seeded Clara Tauson of Denmark in the final. After an error-laden first set, where she won only a single game, Mboko tightened up her play, winning a close second set. A roller-coaster third set saw a lot of momentum swings, with Rybakina serving for the match up 5-4 and then 6-5. Mboko broke serve both times and held her nerve to win the tiebreaker, earning a standing ovation from the crowd. This report will be updated
