Johor's Tourism Infrastructure Nears Completion Ahead Of VJY2026
ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Johor's tourism infrastructure and products are nearly 90 per cent ready as the state steps up large-scale promotions to attract 12 million visitors for Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY2026). Tourism Johor director Mohammad Nazrul Abd Rahim said marketing efforts focus on key entry points, including airports, ferry terminals, land borders, rest and service areas (R&Rs) and major highways across the state. The campaign also utilises social and mainstream media, alongside partnerships with influencers and local celebrities, to showcase Johor's tourism highlights. 'After nearly 13 years since the last Visit Johor Year, which was postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, now is the ideal time to revive the campaign,' he said at the VJY2026 sticker launch at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium today. Key tourism upgrades include a new night experience at the upgraded Johor Zoo and the imminent reopening of eco-tourism sites like Gunung Ledang Waterfall. Nazrul described today's event as the start of a comprehensive, inclusive and impactful promotion to position Johor among Malaysia's top travel destinations. Launched with the Johor Tourism Association, the initiative aims to deploy over 10,000 VJY2026 stickers on public transport and vehicles, including trishaws, motorcycles, cars, tour buses, caravans and e-hailing services. In May, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi projected RM42 billion in direct and indirect revenue from the campaign, based on the expected tourist arrivals. -- BERNAMA

MMEA's Largest Ship Construction Begins With Keel Laying In Türkiye
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Construction of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) has begun with the keel laying ceremony held at DESAN Kaptanoglu Shipyard in Türkiye yesterday. The ceremony, officiated by MMEA's Director of Engineering, First Admiral Mohd Rizal Hishamuddin and MPMS Project Director Capt Mohammad Nasir Man, marked the start of joining the main blocks for the largest vessel in the agency's history. Mohd Rizal said the initial phase of the keel laying involved the installation of blocks 107, 108, 207 and 208, which formed the midsection of the ship. 'This keel laying tradition marks the start of the main block assembly process and carries symbolic significance for the construction of a strategic national asset,' he said in a statement here today. He said the 99-metre-long and 17-metre-wide MPMS was designed for deep-sea operations lasting up to 28 days without resupply, and would be deployed for surveillance in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as well as to monitor areas inaccessible to smaller vessels. Equipped with advanced defence technology, Mohd Rizal said the MPMS would feature an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a 30mm cannon, X- and S-band radars, a helicopter landing pad, a rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB), and four fast interceptor craft. 'The MPMS can travel at 20 knots, accommodate 70 crew members and 20 passengers, and will have onboard medical and detention facilities,' he said. Meanwhile, DESAN Kaptanoglu Shipyard board chairman Cenk Ismail Kaptanoglu said in the same statement that achieving the keel laying milestone in such a short time after the contract signing on May 20 demonstrated the efficiency and commitment of all parties involved. 'The steel blocks installed today will not only form the backbone of the MPMS but also symbolise the strategic relationship and determination of Türkiye and Malaysia to strengthen maritime security. As with our previous projects, we are confident the MPMS can be delivered ahead of the March 2027 schedule,' he said.
